  1. After doing much research to see if Fred ever truly named his favorite dance partner, the only thing I could find regarding Barrie Chase, is from a 1973 interview. In it he says that Chase "is perhaps the best dance partner I ever had." He also states, "Barrie Chase is the best partner - she's the latest partner that I've had, and believe me, that girl has got it - that girl can dance." So, nothing really definitive, but the closest he ever came to actually naming a real favorite.
  2. That's what I mean by MGM type (in bold), I'm not that up on what studio produced which movie. I just watch and enjoy. LOL. That's the best way to be, I guess. While I can find something to love, in musicals from all generations, I believe they became something truly great, with WEST SIDE STORY. Robert Wise and to an equal extent, screenwriter Ernest Lehman, took everything that made the Broadway show great, adapted it beautifully, for the medium of film, and gave us a masterpiece. They worked the same magic in THE SOUND OF MUSIC. In between films tried to measure-up to WSS's brilliance. Some succeeded, while others failed. But, even in their failures, there was often something beautiful to see and hear. The great, big screen musicals of the 60s really have no equal, before them or since.
  3. Yes! THE UNSINKABLE MOLLY BROWN, which is the only Broadway sourced musical that MGM did well! And, yes, contains my favorite musical number from any MGM musical.
  4. Anne, over the years all the studios produced great musicals. My favorite studio for musicals overall, is Fox. There was just something special about them that set them apart for me. Perhaps it was the great use of Technicolor, or their blondes? Not sure, I just prefer them. Also, the early Warner musicals were so much fun, and bought major filming innovations. There's an ego and a self-promotional tone that runs through many of the MGM musicals that is a turn-off for me. I tend to prefer their B-unit musicals to their A-unit ones. But, I have favorites and least favorites, from all the studios. I agree about MOULIN ROUGE (easily the worst film I've ever seen), CHICAGO (people just don't know how to film musical numbers, anymore) and RENT (I'm not their target audience). The days of the finely crafted musical are gone. Of course, a lot of MGM and early Warner's, etc. weren't doing film musicals based on Broadway shows. For those, my favorites were mostly done by Fox (CAROUSEL, THE KING AND I, HELLO, DOLLY!, SOUTH PACIFIC, and the Rolls Royce of film musicals, THE SOUND OF MUSIC); but I also love Warner's THE PAJAMA GAME and THE MUSIC MAN, which is just glorious, Universal's FLOWER DRUM SONG and Columbia's OLIVER! A couple of independents like OKLAHOMA! and WEST SIDE STORY are pretty great, too!
  5. I know they really aren't related (except in name only), and, I know there was some mention of 'Beyond' in the "Faster Pussycat" Thread, but I think they deserve their own thread. They're such a masterpieces. Masterpieces of what, I don't know; but, masterpiece,s nonetheless! Anyone else love them? 'Valley' gets the edge, because it isn't meant to be funny, and is. 'Beyond' set out as a spoof, and succeeds, beautifully.
  6. She's very easy to like. I can't think of a single film she's in that I don't like. She just stepped up and delivered the goods, every time. I remember really liking her as host of THE BELL TELEPHONE HOUR, and I saw her on stage, in IRENE, and while I did like her in that, I liked Debbie Reynolds better.
  7. Sociopathic Cinemacope wrote: Bill, I don't really pay much attention to numbers and I don't really see why you or I should. The numbers are meaningless, and in many instances I would consider it downright rude to not even offer a brief "thank you" or some sort of acknowledgement that something has been read. I'm not even the only person on the boards who does it! And certainly nobody who has ever posted a short "thank you" or some other brief message has broken any forum rules. When you post in here, you have to be aware that there aren't any specific rules in regards to these kind of things. When we participate on these boards, we are all doing so under the same rules, and by participating we implicitly agree to them. There are many people who are quick to complaint about technical issues and other stuff that's not to their liking on these boards... Well, these days it isn't very hard to get a new bulletin board started, you can even do it for free and you can make it password-protected so that nobody can post without your consent. I continue to remain interested in the TCM bb primarily because of my interest in movies, and consider it most unfortunate that people such as johnm_001 and other posters have resorted to foul and filthy language out of their personal dislike and/or personal animosity towards others. Yet I don't see you saying anything to johnm_001 about his use of degrading language towards women when posting on these boards. Either you don't think much of it or you implicitly are approving of such filthy language by him... that's the only explanation I can think of, at any rate. Excellent example of sociopathic behavior, above. Finally, the perfect post for this renamed thread. You should all be very afraid.
  8. The only biography I ever saw on Rita Hayworth, was on TCM. They completely covered her heritage and ethnic background. Not sure what commercial you are speaking of, but TCM is aware of her Latin roots, and has covered it in detail.
  9. For me, THE MUSIC MAN is the second best film musical ever made. It is flawless.
  10. Even though they are basically the exact same song, I much prefer the number in SITR, compared to the one in THE PIRATE. But yes, it's a direct steal.
  11. A very nice tribute to a great actor. He was one of a kind. A wonderful, informative post moira! Thanks.
  12. I'm not trying to control or intimidate anyone? If you feel that way, then there must be something wrong with you. I'm sure no one else feels intimidated by me. I don't like you. There's no rule on this board that says I have to like you. Just accept it. You're not liked. I'm free to ask you to stop responding to my general posts.
  13. So? Nobody is asking you to believe it. It wasn't addressed to you. Meretrix Intentio.
  14. I've done lots of research. People who have written books and published articles have used my research findings, many times. I post nothing here that isn't factual. Cinemascope is quite jealous of me. In case her posts don't already make that abundantly clear.
  15. Oh, how fun! Meretrix Intentio.
  16. Funny how I knew that your "huh?" meant you didn't know the explanation for the 2 versions, but the person you were responding to had no clue. Really odd, isn't it?
  17. Why don't you stop posting a useless post to every post I make? Why don't you stop stalking me? Why don't you mind your own business? Why don't you go outside and get some fresh air? I asked Markus a question, not you. I want his opinion, not your copy and paste uselessness. Stop following me, you creepy troll.
  18. The crazy copy and paste posts are beinning again. Funny how she ruined this thread, then once it was turned over to her she stopped posting. Oh yeah, that's right, I stopped posting here, so her PLAY MISTY FOR ME, FATAL ATTRACTION obsession with me, just moved to the thread that I went to. Talk about obvious.
  19. Markus, in which film would you say Anna Maria Alberghetti's voice is best featured?
  20. If it isn't supported by a book, I'd say it's probably highly questionable. He's posted a lot of very questionable statements before without the slightest bit of evidence, so naturally I tend to be really rather skeptic, unfortunately. This from the women (if she is a woman), who hasn't a single thought or opinion that she didn't copy and paste from someone else. Meretrix Intentio!
  21. Not unless I write it. It's from my research of R&H musicals, among other things. It's all there for public consumption, in the UCLA and Academy Archives.
  22. I agree. Doris Day should've been cast in The Sound of Music. If anyone is doubting her acting skills, they need to re-watch Love Me or Leave Me. Doris was also the original choice for South Pacific, but was considered to be too expensive by 20th Century Fox. The reason Day may have come off too expensive, is that she was contractually obligated to three studios at the time. MGM, Paramount and Warners. For her to have done SOUTH PACIFIC, Fox would have had to cough-up some major bucks to settle her contracts, or three studios would have had to wait for her (which was highly unlikely). The memos are quite interesting, and Buddy Adler appears to really want her in the role. Joshua Logan's memos imply that he didn't want her. Adler seemed to ignore him and continued to try to work something out. It just fell-apart in the end, and a role she was born to play, went to someone else. She was the front-runner for THE SOUND OF MUSIC. Even Richard Rodgers was on record assuming she would play the role. When William Wyler mentioned Audrey Hepburn's name, there was a bit of a backlash among industry people, because everyone figured on it being Doris Day. Although, Ernest Lehman, who was the first person signed-on for TSOM, did not want Day, and lobbied hard, to have Wyler replaced, when he began to tamper with Lehman's vision of the film.
