  1. Leslie Fenton is the lead in SHAMROCK HANDICAP. It's a pretty decent film. J.Farrell MacDonald is good in this one too.
  2. Yes Alix, she was in STREET SCENE. I just recently got a copy of AN AMERICAN TRAGEDY, but have not seen it as yet. I hope to see it soon.
  3. Yes. they are both good. I like Sylvia Sidney. There are too few of her films available (because she was a Paramount contractee). The Carey Grant set that these discs come from is very good. There are two post code films with Carey Grant & Joan Bennett that are also part of this set that are lots of fun; BIG BROWN EYES (1936) and WEDDING PRESENT (1936).
  4. This batch of posters really rocks!
  5. There's also the 1933 RKO film with Phil Harris and Charley Ruggels, MELODY CRUISE, and THE PRINCESS COMES ACROSS (1936) ith Carole Lombard and Fred Mac Murray.
  6. I have not seen CHANPAGNE. I have seen most of Hitch's silents. I liked THE LODGER,EASY VIRTUE, THE RING, THE FARMER'S WIFE, and THE MANXMAN. RICH AND STRANGE also has the lovely Betty Amann (of ASPHALT fame) in it too!
  7. It was an ok movie. I liked Rogers and Foster better in PROFESSIONAL SWEETHEART.
  8. Frank Capra had said that he tried looking for a 6 foot Asian actor for the Yen role, but was unable to find one, so he cast Nils Asther.
  9. Chas. Brabin was married to Theda Bara.
  10. Kathlyn Williams also appears in C.B. DeMille's THE WHISPERING CHORUS (1918).
  11. I liked PICCADILLY as well, however the music score is not all that good which can make watching the film a bit of a rough go at times.
  12. "I can't believe they're going to release a DVD of a silent film with NO sound track at all." I can't imagine that Fox wouldn't commission a new score for this film. If we're lucky and the written score for CITY GIRL survives, maybe it would be re-recorded.
  13. The "Hays Office" was created as a self censorship board by the major hollywood studios to keep the government from stepping in and censoring their films. The producers created a production code of conduct that was not strictly enforced until 1934, when Joseph Breen took control. Sometime around 1915 or so, the United States Supreme Court had ruled that motion pictures were not covered by the first amendment. This decision was not overturned until sometime in the 1950s.
  14. As far as I know, the version of CITY GRIL that survived is the "silent" one, which in this case means no movietone track. The print that was shown at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art several years ago had no soundtack. In fact, at the time it was believed that Fox had provided a print with a movietone track, so they did not hire anyone to play for this film. It turned out that there was no soundtrack and that this was the only print available, so it was presented anyway without any music at all.
  15. I haven't watched all of THE PEACH GIRL yet, but I would guess judging by the font used for the title cards I would say that they are original. Given that there were many english spaeking people in China during this period (not to mention the Hong Kong colony), I would say that the film's producers wanted to get the widest audience and spend the least amount to do it.
  16. I did not know that FOUR DEVILS had been found. When did this happen? I think they may be pulling your leg. No other silent film site that I have visited have mentioned the rediscovery of FOUR DEVILS. This would be a major find if true.
  17. Harold Lloyd's wonderful 1928 film SPEEDY was shown at UCLA's Royce Hall to a full house Saturday, May 31st. It was even more enjoyable as guest conductor Carl Davis led the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra through the beautiful score he had written for this film. Dustin Hoffman along with Suzanne Lloyd spoke before the start of the film. The audience gave both the film and Carl Davis a well deserved standing ovation. Next year's film will be Chaplin's 1925 masterpiece, THE GOLD RUSH. It should be lots o' fun!
  18. She is excellent in PICCADILLY (1929), although I don't care much for the film's music score. She is also very good in TOLL OF THE SEA (1922). I think it may be the only footage of her in color. She has a very small role in OLD SAN FRANCISCO (1927). I am looking forward to watching the rarely shown DAUGHTER OF THE DRAGON (1931) and A STUDY IN SCARLET (1933).
  19. I love Mae Clark and Marie Prevost in PAROLE GIRL. It's kinda cheesy, but fun!
  20. Nancy Carroll was also good in Ernst Lubitsh's BROKEN LULLABY (1932), also teamed with Phillips Holmes here as well.
  21. There seems to be something to your theory. Although I can think of a couple of exceptions. *******CAUTION....SPOILER ALERT!!! SPOILER ALERT!!********* In THE BITTER TEA OF GENERAL YEN (1933) it is the man, Yen who commits suicide, and in FRISCO JENNY (1932) it is Jenny who end up paying the price for murder. In WASHINGTON MERRY-GO-ROUND (1932) the evil Edward T Norton, (played by Alan Dinehart) commits suicide rather than go to trial. That being said, it would seem that in the majority of pre-codes, when there is a suicide, it it usually committed by a woman, and a murder generally committed by a man.
  22. We are unlikely to see THE PATRIOT any time soon as it is a lost film. IN OLD ARIZONA is a Fox film, and is available on DVD. Another Fox film that would be nice to have shown again is John Ford's RILEY THE COP (1928).
  23. It is indeed an odd movie, but many parts of it are quite enjoyable.
  24. SONG OF BERNADETTE is an excellent film. Henry King's direction and visuals are great in this one.
