Classic Hollywood Star Biographies

Thank you. I'm glad you liked the Gable and Harlow bios. It was fun to write about Jean Harlow. So much new information has come to light about her death, things that were unknown years ago when I originally wrote the article. The new books about her including Bombshell: The Life of Jean Harlow by David Stenn really cleared up some misconceptions and rumors about her death. It is interesting to imagine what it would have been like if Gable and Harlow had ever gotten together, yet they were good friends and he always spoke highly of her. In watching Harlow movies again before I revised the article/bio, I was struck by what a wonderful comedienne she was. No one could throw a huffing and puffing, dish-throwing tantrum like Harlow on screen. She was especially wonderful in Libeled Lady. Dina Marie www.classichollywoodbios.com -

Thanks a million! I feel so honored to have been able to actually interview Glenn Ford and he was so down-to-earth. I also interviewed Ralph Bellamy for a book of TV star interviews I did in the early 90s. To this day, I can't believe I really actually talked to such great actors and such a big part of the history of Hollywood's golden age. In real life, they were both as wonderful as you'd hope them to be. Thanks again, Dina-Marie www.classichollywoodbios.com -

Thanks Phoebe. I adore Gable & Lombard. I guess that's why I featured the Modern Screen 1937 magazine cover on my homepage. That vintage magazine cover is one of my favorites. They were so artistically done in those days... like paintings. If you saw my house, you'd see that I have stills of many golden age stars but Gable & Lombard are everywhere. The book "Spencer Tracy: A Biography" by Larry Swindell was published not long after Tracy's death (1969) and the author had actually met him. It's true that many feel that they never really knew the "whole person" and Swindell says that as well about Tracy. There was a part of Tracy that he kept solitary and private from everyone. What the author did was interview many people and put together as rounded a portrait as possible. He had the cooperation of Spencer's brother Carroll Tracy and his widow Louise and directors Stanley Kramer and John Ford as well. Carroll gave quite a bit of information about Spencer's childhood which gives insight into the man/actor he would become. There are so few people left to interview, it would be difficult to write such a book today. Larry Swindell also wrote a wonderful book about Carole Lombard called "Screwball: The Life of Carole Lombard". I read everything I can get my hands on about classic film stars but these two books are favorites. There's a link to the Swindell book about Carole Lombard on my site. Even though it was published in 1975 you can still get it, thanks goodness. www.classichollywoodbios.com Dina-Marie -

Thank you so much. I just discovered the new information about Jean Harlow myself. A couple of new books cleared up a lot of misconceptions. Clark Gable never wrote an autobiography however his widow Kay Spreckels did (Clark Gable: A Personal Portrait by Kay Gable). There's a complete list/link of all available books on Gable, Harlow and all the actors on my site. Spencer Tracy never wrote an autobiography but I highly recommend "Spencer Tracy by Larry Swindell". That was the best of the biographies on Tracy in my opinion. As far as the Natalie Wood bios I liked Natalie Wood: A Life by Gavin Lambert, more than the recent "Natasha" which was a little sensationalistic for my taste. I did write an article about Frank Sinatra years ago but I would want to add to it and revamp/revise it before putting it out again. I am planning to add bios on Ava Gardner, William Powell & Myrna Loy and Edward G. Robinson. I'll have to recover from doing the web site first! Anyway thanks you two. I am so very happy you liked the site www.classichollywoodbios.com Dina-Marie -

Thank you! I appreciate the feedback. I worked so hard on that site and I really wanted fellow classic film fans to enjoy, the photos, biographies, etc. I never designed one before and it just about killed me Thanks again and I'm glad you enjoyed it. -
Hello. I used to write for the now collectible Hollywood Studio Magazine and have posted some of my articles (revised & updated) along with rare photographs, vintage movie magazine covers and lobby cards on a web site which consists of a 1990 interview with Glenn Ford and biographies/interview quotes on Joan & Constance Bennett, Clark Gable, Jackie Gleason, Cary Grant, Jean Harlow, Carole Lombard and Natalie Wood. Each page features a different star and photos. I'm very excited about it. Please check it out at www.classichollywoodbios.com Thank you and let me know what you think.
