In an interview a couple of years before her death in 1977, Joan Crawford happily reminisced about living in New York in the 1920's. She said that you could get a several course dinner at a nice restaurant for .50; cocktails were often .25; newspapers .03, and a decent apartment in a good neighborhood rented for $25.00 a month. But I have always wondered about the long-term affects of consuming all that bathtub gin, etc. in that twelve year period of prohibition.

Hi to all of you. I am a fairly new member to the forum and I am so excited to be here. I started watching and collecting classic movies when I was 5, and now that I am 21, one should see my collection. I do have a question....I have been told that I have an abundance of knowledge about old movies and the actors and actresses of that time. My mother says that I was born in the wrong era and that she hates Christmas shopping for me because the things I would like are hard to find. I really enjoy watching them and even analyzing them and having good conversations. I have always wondered how one goes about becoming a film historian. Does any of you know? I would really love to take some film study classes, but there really isnt much out here in sunny Arizona. I am also interested in film preservation. Thanks for letting me ramble...any advice about what I can do with this passion I would greatly appreciate it...I would like to do more than collect movies and memoriabilia...I would like to share my passion and learn more. thanks

Anyone know this movie? Gas tanker stowaways
bhryun replied to bhryun's topic in Information, Please!
I don't think it was that - in "White Heat", they get out of the truck.......in this movie, most of the drama is focused on the guys inside the truck, and they never get out. During the movie, a leak starts in the tank, raising the fuel (and tension) level, and - at the end of the movie, someone starts pouring a hose out of the tanker, and you see some things (e.g., a hat, glasses, etc.) pour out of the tanker, implying that the stowaways drowned. I agree, that it was Cagney's best...."Top of the world, ma, top of the world!" > That was James Cagney, at his best, in "White Heat". > TCM show it a lot and it's on DVD now. -

JEAN ARTHUR AND CLAUDETTE COLBERT DAY!!!!! -
Great Acting ability somehow seems lost in today's world of film. It is so hard to summon up my favorite, but I will try. Top five women: 1. Jean Arthur (my favorite) 2. Claudette Colbert 3. Dorothy McGuire 3. Myrna Loy 4. Ginger Rogers (she could do more than just dance) 5. Jeanne Crain Top Five Men: 1. William Powell 2. Ray Milland 3. Gary Cooper 4. Jimmy Stewart 5. Gregory Peck I love Cary Grant, but as said before he seems to always be playing Cary Grant...in his later films.
-
it doesn't bother me in the least what their sexuality is but i think that the reason it gets to some people is that it contradicts what they were so famous for. for example, cary grant was portrayed on film as a ladies man and in reality women swooned over him and the fact that they have to face it that it's all imaginary is probably disappointing.

"Gee whiz, Ms. Giddons, you sure are repetitive!!" Sorry folks, but my PC isn't acting right. My apologies. Reginna

Ah, yes Mongo: Hope Emerson --- a B's B. Remember her as (I forget her name on this show) as the bar owner in the PETER GUNN TV series. (Was it LOLA's?) Reginna
-
Hi Mongo: My favorite wicked woman is Margaret Wicherly (sp?) as Cody Garrett's mom in WHITE HEAT. They don't get 'sweeter' and meaner that she was!
-
Ah, what a difficult choice to make, but here are some of my most faves: Bette Davis --- a force of nature. Geraldine Fitzgerald --- a marvelous actor and person. Meryl Streep --- one of the best ever. Linda Hunt --- a diminutive powerhouse; exceptional abilities. Sir Ralph Richardson --- my favorite of the "British Sirs". Peter Donat -- an angel; they don't get better or more beautiful. Sir Paul Scofield --- my second favorite "Sir". Sidney Poitier --- an 'actors actor' and trailblazer. Al Freeman --- underrated and underemployed. Cicely Tyson --- "...some of the most memorable moments on film." A legend. Paul Robeson --- an icon for all time. Julie Harris --- perhaps not underrated, but certainly underemployed in film. Myrna Loy --- the epitome of dry humor and sophistication... ...with the exception of Audrey Hepburn. I've never seen her do any bad work; also an angel. She and Peter Donat would have made some screen pair!

Leopoldine Konstantine, who played the role of Claude Rains' German mother in Notorious was a monster. Not only was she morbidly possessive of her son, but when she discovered Ingrid Bergman was actually a spy for the Allies she began to slowly poison her.

Thank you very much!! For both the welcome and the name!! Now I don't have to keep wondering about it :-p Thank you again! Meghan

Hi guys. I'm new the boards, so HI EVERYONE! I don't have much information on the movie, but if you've seen it, you'll know what I'm talking about, and hopefully I can get a name. I'm wanting to purchase the movie, if possible. I might give away spoilers though on accident trying to figure out the title. Ok, details on the movie, Its about a young girl, no more than 6, who has a killing fetish. She acts like such a sweet, innocent, girl, its almost eerie, she also plays the piano while being asked if she has murdered anyone. The mother can't believe its her, the gardener (I believe that's what he was)doesn't trust her, she killed a boy at her school, but everyone thinks she is so kind and sweet. I don't think there are any other movies like it, so hopefully it won't be hard for someone else to name. Sorry its not much information, wish I could think of actors or actresses in it, but I haven't seen it in over a year, so I'm not sure anymore. It might have been all a dream, haha! But I found the movie eerily good, only because you wouldn't expect such a thing. Anyway. Anything would be a great help. Thank you.

Probably Carlos Ramirez.

Who's got your heart? (A male and female question)
bhryun replied to bhryun's topic in Your Favorites
I believe ya'll are still on the topic, and I decided to join in. It is difficult for me to decide between the two, William Powell and Cary Grant. But, after much thinking on the topic, I believe my heart goes to Cary Grant. Something about him, every movie I see him in, every kiss he gives that lucky gal, I just can't help but admire him. Anyway. That is who's got my heart, and it probably won't change ^.~ Cowbtony-I wish I had Tivo, but I am unfortunate enough to not have it. But I will try to remember it. Or write something about it for me. Its worth a watch ^.~ even if it is at 4 AM my time...0.0 I might set the VCR haha. -
I've been trying to find the title of a movie I remember watching years ago, but haven't had any luck - Here's the basic plot device: Some fugitives are on the run and hide in a false compartment inside a gas tanker truck. Most of the movie is focused on the tensions between the fugitives, as well as on a leak that starts in their compartment - the end of the movie shows someone emptying fuel out of the tanker truck, and a hat / some glasses, etc. comes pouring out of the the tank....Anyone know the movie?

bhryun replied to bhryun's topic in Your Favorites
You all need to watch Guy Madison in Till the End of Time TCM rarely shows it. It's about returning vets after W.W.II. It will be shown on 10/06 at 5:00 AM ET. Set your Tivo! Robert Mitchum is also in the film, along with underrated Dorothy McGuire. Madison will grab your heart, I am sure. -
What scene represents the Best Slap ever given in a film?
bhryun replied to a topic in Your Favorites
Well, it didn't help matters that Hopkins never got along with Davis. This hate intensified when Davis started sleeping with Hopkins' husband. I don't know if the slap occurred before or after Davis' affair. Also, the slap in "All About Eve" when George Sanders strikes Anne Baxter is pretty good, too. This is near the end of the film after he reveals that Eve Harrington (Baxter) is a fraud. What a great topic! -
What scene represents the Best Slap ever given in a film?
bhryun replied to a topic in Your Favorites
In "Vivacious Lady" the scene with Ginger Rogers out on the terrace or the garden. It is a hillarious scene between her and Frances Mercer. If I am not mistaken it was voted the best movie slap on one of TCM's polls and can be viewed in the multi-media section. -
It sounds to me like it might be a scene from Carefree. Tabitha
