Can some Fred Astaire aficianado help me out? I'm searching for the title of the film, and I don't remember much about it except a brilliant scene where Fred is teeing off at a golf range and does some fancy footwork in between tees. It's absolutely fantastic, as it shows his obvious talent as a dancer and as an athlete (golfer) as well. Can anyone tell me the name of that movie? Thanks so much!

I was kinda surprised to see this topic posted. Only because I've been having conversations like this a lot recently with other people ( my parents mostly ). We've been discussing it, because of the movies that have been coming out lately. Why they've been tanking and whatnot. Ever since I was little, older movies and the actors that play in them have been instilled in me. Though I'm only 19 years old, I've noticed more so recently that the actors today just don't really have the " it " factor ( as mom would say ) and I would have to agree. Not like, for example Cary Grant,James Cagney, Ingrid Bergman or even Olivia DeHavilland. It's hard to find that " it " quality in actors today. So,with that all said. I can't really give an opion or guess on who will be a " legend " in the years to come. ~ Movie Guru ~

What scene represents the Best Slap ever given in a film?

Please forgive me for veering off theme somewhat, but the best hand-to-torso scene in film is in OLD ACQUAINTANCE when Bette Davis SHAKES Miriam Hopkins mercilessly. It's a slam-dunk! -

I would place my vote for the following: Jeffrey Wright (as Martin Luther King Jr. in Boycott; as "Peoples" in the most recent Shaft and as Lincoln in Top Dog Under Dog). There is nothing this young man CAN'T do. An amazing actor. Terrence Howard, lead in Hustle & Flow, I now believe posssess that kind of promise. Also, Johnny Depp and Denzel Washington without a doubt. Of the women, I think Cate Blanchett has a shot at becoming a legend; also, Angela Basset. Reginna

Desert Nights has been shown on TCM before but it was several years ago. I was fortunate to get a copy on VHS at the time. It is a brief film, running 62 minutes. It has an almost Todd Browning-ish quality to it with it's plot twists. It is about the robbery of a diamond mine. I won't include any spoilers, but I have to say it surprised me. There are also excellent special effects and the cinematography is evocative. The cast is basically a menage-a trois with John Gilbert, Ernest Torrence and Mary Nolan, who is surprisingly sexy in this. This was a pre-code film at a point in time when the "censors" were not too concerned about the content of silent films. Roy

Here is what Carl Bennet of The Silent Era web site has to say: "Nederlands Filmmuseum announced on 17 April 2004 that they have recovered one of the silent era?s presumed lost treasures, Beyond the Rocks (1922). The Paramount production stars Gloria Swanson and Rudolph Valentino. A Dutch film collector who passed away four years ago in Haarlem left more than 2000 reels of vintage film prints to the museum. All six reels of Beyond the Rocks were present in the collection. Beyond the Rocks was presumed to have disappeared for many years. The only surviving fragment from the film was a one-minute nitrate strip which had been kept in the movie collection of the Filmmuseum since 1976. The recently-discovered Dutch version of Beyond the Rocks [Gouden Boeien], turned out to be in fairly good condition. The goal is to restore the movie as much as possible to its original version. ?We are feeling rather excited because it is a wonderful rediscovery,? says the museum?s Jan van den Brink. The romantic melodrama is the story of a woman who falls in love with a younger man during the honeymoon of her marriage to an older man. ?It is a complete feature film in six acts, with a beautiful story in which Valentino plays a rather decent character,? says van den Brink. The thousands of cans of film were stored by Nederlands Filmmuseum in a small number of warehouses, and the complete print was discovered one reel at a time over a period of months as archivists catalogued the collection. The collector?s unusual organization of the collection complicated the process of identifying the unlabeled reels. The project was so massive that it took two years to identify and regroup the reels of the Beyond the Rocks print. The 1812-metre long, amber-tinted nitrate positive print is presumed to be the export version of the film, since the intertitles are Dutch and feature the ?Nordisk-Paramount? legend, and it is printed on filmstock manufactured by Gavaert Belgium in 1923. While the film appears to have premiered at seven reels in America, the film is assumed to have been edited to six reels for general U.S. and/or European release. The Nederlands Filmmuseum decided to restore the film (intertitles and color tints intact), which is complete except for approximately two minutes of irrecoverable damage, and will present the restored film during the second edition of the Filmmuseum Biennial, which took place on 5-10 April 2005 in Amsterdam. The restoration of Beyond the Rocks was made possible among others by ING Real Estate Development. The museum has announced that it will also prepare restoration prints for international distribution. The restored edition of Beyond the Rocks (with Henny Vrienten?s soundtrack) had its world premiere on April 5 during the opening of the second Filmmuseum Bi?nnale. It was also shown at Path? Tuschinski (Amsterdam) and at Filmmuseum Cinerama (Amsterdam) in April 2005. Milestone Film & Video, renowned for distributing major recent restorations, will distribute Beyond the Rocks in North America, and will produce a DVD home video edition. Roy
