  1. Thanks everyone!! Isn't Kings Go Forth in their library as well? It seems they've shown it several times in the past few months...
  2. I love Black Adder!! Miranda Richardson was hilarious as Queen Elizabeth. Fawlty Towers is another great Britcom I enjoy. Ahhh, I do appreciate British humor.
  3. Cary Grant Natalie Wood Robert Mitchum James Dean Marion Davies Bogey and Bacall (They count as one, right? Hehe) Katherine Hepburn Charlie Chaplin Peter Lorre Bob Hope ...And everyone can sleep where they darn well please. ) A really interesting dinner party would include some feuds though...Davis and Crawford...Fontaine and De Havilland...Talk about some fireworks!!
  4. I just finished watching "The More the Merrier" and couldn't help laughing at Charles Coburn. I also love Jean Arthur as well as William Powell and Myrna Loy in "The Thin Man" series. Tabitha
  5. why oh why would they think that Paltrow could pull it off. As said before, there is only ONE Dietrich! I also agree that a European actress, and perhaps an unknown might work....
  6. I agree about Bachelor Mother. She is great in it! I showed it to my sister, who never really liked her, and now she loves her and is progressing towards the love of old classics more and more! Tabitha

    EL CID

Still waiting for El Cid to come out on DVD Plum
  8. Oops! I think I focused a little too much on the pre-1970 stipulation and not quite enough on the post-1930 one...
  9. Ghost World is another great one! I thought Million Dollar Baby was heartbreakingly good, but I have yet to see Sideways.
  10. Looking for an american deceased actor that was a big film star in france where he lived also from the sixties through the eighties.
  11. How can it be that of all of Alec's films his GREATEST and Academy-award winner Bridge Over The River Kwai is not even listed???? How can that be?????
  12. Hi Scarlett, I agree with you! Jeffrey Hunter was too handsome to play Jesus. Poor Mary Magdeline! I remember reading that he was chosen apparently because his compassion, character and personality seemed to be perfect for the role. It wasn't so much his exceptional looks. ttoons

    Talking Silents

Hi LorreKarloff, Thanks for the welcome. I used to post on the boards a long time ago but some very unpleasant individuals began abusing people so TCM shut the boards down. I look forward to seeing what's up this area. I'm a bit of an expert and am currently preparing a book on primitive films for publication. I have a Master's degree with a specialty in early film before Griffith. I'm thrilled to death over all the great compilations of early films that are being released on DVD. When I was earning my degree it was very difficult to see many of the films that are a standard part of early film history. Fortunately, companies like Kino on Video, Milestone and Image-Entertainment are doing a great job bringing obscure early films back in front of an audience. Roy
  14. I'd love to see one for John Garfield. I'm seriously beginning to like this guy.
  15. If you were allowed to invite 10 classic actors/actresses to your home for 1 week, who would you invite and where (which room) in your home would you allow each person to sleep???
  16. I would like to see Sideways and Million Dollar Baby. I had heard from a few people that these were the 2 worst films ever made and yet they got so much acclaim. I hope they show it on cable t.v. soon - I don't want to waste a penny on buying or renting these duds.
  17. It's true that movies are not what they used to be, but some great ones do come along now and again. This summer has been really lacking though...I've only gone to see 3 movies all summer. I wish we had a revival theatre in Atlanta...You'd think it'd be a natural addition what with TCM and all...Go figure.
  18. Hi Larry, Great thread you've got going here. I'd like to hear some of your stories about Marion Davies and Natalie Wood, if you ever got a chance to meet her. Oh, and what about Cary Grant? Thanks!!
  19. Gotta be said - Tommy Udo - one of the best performances in all moviedom, IMO. I so wish Widmark woulda stayed a "bad guy". :-)
  20. Which just proves not to believe everything you read. If I did, I'd believe Lana much before Faye.
  21. Like him? Nope - LOVE him! I agree with those of you who said he is KING. IMO None better. I sooo enjoyed Tuesday. I don't know how long it's been since Cagney was star of the month but I sure wish he would be again soon!
  22. Robert Osbourne just said last week that there are many definitions of film noir but it really is based on the dark shadowy unhappy personality of the characters. I KNOW I'm not paraphrasing him correctly but that's kinda what he said. He said it technically wasn't based on the dark forboding sets - or the venetian blinds, although I liked that lol - but on the personalities of the characters. And I always listen to Bob. ;-)
  23. Am I shallow? Probably - but I can't get over Woody Allen's private life long enough to watch one of his movies. Actually I did start Annie Hall once and didn't get into it - but I'll admit that I didn't try very hard.
  24. Darnnit, I'm sorry for double posting - I will get the hang of it sooner or later. But I just thought of one movie I've seen lately that I LOVED. I'm buying this movie and I never ever buy modern day stuff. BEYOND THE SEA, the Bobby Darin story with Kevin Spacey. Sooooooooooo good!
