Thanks for starting this thread, I thought of it myself and then realized that I've been doing a lot of that lately so thought better of it. It seems I just can't shut up since I found this forum - it is just SO good to finally be able to talk classics! ;-) Normandie, you just gotta know that you saying you relate to Carlotto's Way on a personal level is gonna make some people, like me, wonder what you've been up to. *grin* I really love that movie, though. Pacino is one of my "modern day" favs - he and Anthony Hopkins, followed closely be De Niro, and Carlotto's Way is one of the best IMO. Can't stand Sean Penn, though. I also enjoyed Gladiator and find Russell Crowe to be pretty good - leaving his personal life out of it. I don't watch many modern day movies unless they are recommended to me - why waste the time when I KNOW I can turn on TCM any day, any time, and find something that IS good. But I do watch the occassional movie and enjoy them. I also like some of Matt Damon's stuff. I guess I'm not answering the question as to 'specific' movies very well - but I can't think of any I've seen recently. I want to see The Aviator and the one about the writer of Peter Pan, but I haven't yet. I did see parts of The Phantom of the Opera and it looked delightful from what I saw. As for "terrible movies these days" - IMO even though they have a long way to go in some respects, movies have improved a lot since the 60's and 70's when they would have been better off to have just closed the doors to Hollywood. If I can think of a handful of movies from those 2 decades that I thought were worth watching, I'd amaze myself. And don't get me started on the Oscars for those decades - - - LOL What a laugh!

Wow what a collection. I'll have to look for that one. Would be great to have for winter entertainment this year!

Movies That People Tell Me I'm Supposed to Like....

Deco - I think it's that Tennessee Williams movies leave me with a sick feeling in my stomach - which I can't abide. I guess they are 'supposed to' do that - but I don't like it. You are right about the great performances especially in Suddenly, Last Summer. Of course Kate and especially Monty IMO gave great performances in that movie, (don't like Liz, sorry) as well as Lancaster in The Rose Tattoo (and the woman who won the actress award, whose name always escapes me Anna - -). Some of the performances were great - but it takes more than great acting for me to really enjoy a movie. I know critics base most things on the acting ability - but I also have to enjoy myself. It's not that I don't like serious movies, either, I love Of Mice and Men - even though I had kind of a 'sick' feeling at the end, you knew it had to be that way. I also love love love film noir. "The Deer Hunter" left me feeling the same way as TW's films - I thought it was a great movie, but I sure wish that sick feeling would leave me every time I think about it. Maybe I'm just not much of a realist - and don't like to think about the "sickness" in people's minds. That's why I love Stephen King books so much. Many people think I'm weird to like "horror books" but I laugh at the word "horror" when the real horror is on the news every night. King's books for the most part could never happen and they get me out of the 'real world'. TW's writings of *SPOILER* of cannibalism and 'self-imposed suicide/murder' as in The Roman Spring of Mrs. Stone (I know I got that title wrong but you know the one I mean, with Vivien Leigh and Warren Beatty) just make me sick to my stomach - and the endings stay with me - much like the atrocities I hear on the news - which is why I don't watch it, either. Didn't mean to write a book here - maybe I'm just trying to get a handle on my thoughts myself. :-) scar11ett who apparently is also katyscarllett - I guess I couldn't get in one day and created another name?? But they are both me. hehe -
Thanks for the education roylovessilents, very interesting. And welcome to the boards. Not too many people find this part of the forums, so please return and post. I tried to get some people over here before but had little sucess.

Ive always been amazed at Shirley Temple's talent, especially in her early films, and Margaret O'Brien was so convincing and serious and just adorable. For the boys my vote goes to Jackie Coogan, (I can watch The Kid & The Ragman over and over) and the "Our Gang" kids. They are still so much fun to watch! And the brightest child star today I think is Dakota Fanning. She stole the show in "Hide and Seek", from DiNiro no less! Im buying the DVD and I hardly ever buy a new film. And next to Tom Cruise in "War of the Worlds"---now thats not even a fair contest, Dakota wins again!

ttoons, is Jeffrey Hunter the guy who played Jesus in hmmm, it was either Jesus of Nazareth of The Greatest Story Ever Told - I have them both, I'm just too lazy to go look. hehe I think it was the former. If it is - I find it very hard to watch him play Jesus. And yes, I am dead serious. Not because he was a bad actor, I think he did a great job - but because I feel weird watching a movie about Jesus while thinking how gorgeous the actor is at the same time. It just don't feel "right" somehow. But I DO agree with you - he was very handsome. Not "too" handsome, either - but too handsome to play Jesus. lol

George Raft coulda parked his shoes - - - - I think he was very handsome. I get so angry when I hear/read bad stuff about Raft, his acting, etc. There is a site on the internet that just rips him to shreads. I was so going to email the guy and give him a piece of my mind - until I remembered that I have similar feelings about some actors/actresses - that many people would get upset about. Of course, I would have the brains and the decency not to create horrible web-sites about them - hmmmm, maybe I will email this guy after all. lol Larry, as a beautician, I can tell you that James Dean, IMO WAS blonde. Ash blonde. Some people consider it light brown but it really is ash blonde. JMHO. I gotta say, too, errrrr - - - well - - - I think Brad Pitt is gorgeous. Too young for my heart to skip a beat as many young ladies do - but I do enjoy looking at him. He reminds me of a Greek statue. I like Brad, am not 'crazy' about him, but good looking, yes, IMO. And I do enjoy some of his movies. Legends of the Fall - of course, Anthony Hopkins was in that too. *grin* But the one remake that I did like - and I detest remakes - is Meet Joe Black - remade from Devil Takes a Holiday. I really enjoy that movie - hmmm, come to think of it Anthony Hopkins was in that one too. Go figure. lol

Im a huge fan of jazz and big band music. A good chunck of my record collection is Benny Goodman, the Dorsey Brothers, Glenn Miller, Louis Armstrong, Harry James, etc. and I wish I had some Kay Kyser. But I cant see dismissing an entire genre of music as srchpln said with reference to 'rap and rock'. I cant vouch for rap because I dont like it or listen to it, but I do know there is lots of great rock music new and old, although the 'greats' are harder to find these days. The rest of my music collection extends from the 50's thru today-mostly rock-and its all good IMO. You are missing out on a lot of beautiful music by generalizing like that, I think.

12 is an interesting number... Disclaimer: These are in no particular order...I find it impossible to rank. Out of the Past The Big Sleep Bringing Up Baby Miracle on 34th Street His Girl Friday My Favorite Brunette City Lights Breakfast at Tiffany's Rebel Without a Cause Arsenic and Old Lace Show People Casablanca/Roman Holiday/Nights of Cabiria Honorable mention goes to On the Waterfront, The Sound of Music, and Smiles of a Summer Night. Ok, maybe I cheated a little, but it's the best I can do.

What are some of your modern favorites? I LOVED Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind...How did it not get an oscar nomination??? I also loved Amelie and A Very Long Engagement...I like Jean-Pierre Jeunet's off-kilter approach. Mulholland Drive was really great I thought...David Lynch's movies are always interesting though I may not prefer a second viewing, ha. Wes Anderson puts out some really great stuff (The Royal Tenenbaums being my personal favorite). And I love Sofia Coppola. I can't choose between The Virgin Suicides and Lost in Translation...They're both great. I can't wait to see her next movie about Marie Antoinette. Tarantino is good. I loved Kill Bill and Pulp Fiction. I like Tim Burton a lot also. Big Fish, Nightmare Before Christmas, Sleepy Hollow, Edward Scissorhands, Ed Wood...Good stuff. And I really liked Jim Jarmusch's Dead Man. Almost Famous, The Big Lebowski and Fargo were great also.
-
OH! I forgot Woody Allen. I LOVE Annie Hall and Play it Again, Sam is great as well. Diane Keaton was great in Sleeper also. If only Woody were still making movies like these...Though I've heard that his latest movie, Match Point (I think that's the name), is really good. I guess we'll see...I just know I can't sit through another Anything Else (though the shots of NYC were really beautiful).

Monty Python and the Holy Grail!!!! "It's only a flesh wound..." Hahaha. Cary Grant, especially in Bringing Up Baby, Arsenic and Old Lace and His Girl Friday. I love Marion Davies' comedies as well, particularly Show People. I love Bob Hope also. My Favorite Brunette and The Ghost Breakers (Pardon me, am i protruding?) are a couple of my favorites. Chaplin and Keaton are great also and I still enjoy the 3 Stooges. I also really enjoy Wes Anderson's movies (The Royal Tenenbaums and Rushmore are my favorites). And Steve Carell always makes me laugh even in sub-par movies. And Frances McDormand (one of my favorite actresses) cracks me up in Fargo and Almost Famous! I love her!! And, finally, When Harry Met Sally is hilarious! It's a modern classic.

Thank You!! Happy Dance!!! I have been looking for that Title for 15 years. Now the quest begins to find the movie. I hope it's not another 15. You made my day! Thank You

I would enjoy Vivien Leigh, Natalie Wood, Spencer Tracy, Laurence Olivier, or Maureen O'Hara-- although both Spence and Maureen have spots on the Summer Under the Stars Line-Up.

Olivia DeHavialland Autobio-Posthumous Release?
bhryun replied to bhryun's topic in General Discussions
I had written to Olivia back in the early 1990's and back then she was still signing photographs for the fans, she inscribed the photo and even sent back a little thank you card. I was surprised to learn that since then she has completely stopped the practice and returns all requests saying she is too busy writing her book to fulfill requests. I suspect her health may be more the issue but I am sure that any mail that was sent to her would find its way to her, even if it's just "Oliva DeHavilland, Actress, France" -
The movie was about a man and a woman who switch places. There was a statue (I believe it was above their bed. He was a work-aholic and she was a social butterfly and they switched places. I don't remember much else except that it made me laugh. I would love to see it again. Please help!!

Funny that you didn't like STREETCAR. I saw it for the first time when I was about 18 and had the same reaction - depressing, and bleak and all that shouting. Now, I'd rank it among my top 10. Give it another chance. However, if you don't like the film, you won't like the play either since it is quite faithful. And to the poster who didn't get Tennesse Williams' movies - they are really T.W. plays and film adaptations. But again, if you don't like the film version you probably won't care for the play. However, I am incredulous that you cannot be blown away by the performances in CAT, SUDDENLY LAST SUMMER and SWEET BIRD. All amazing even if somewhat sanitized for the big screen. -
Laughton was so fabulous in this role. He's fabulous in any role, really. One of my favorites is Witness for the Prosecution. It was his birthday July 1. I wish they would have had a Charles Laughton Marathon that day. Or did they and I missed it!?

Nevermind I found it! It's called Fast and Furious staring ann sothern in 1939.

I saw a movie at the end of june or early july and would like to know the name of it. I just remember parts of it so here's what i remember... I remember there was this guy who was going to take a vacation and his wife told him not to try to solve any cases. But, he did anyway and she helped him along. I remember a lion trainer with his lions that were at the hotel. I also remember the guy who was solving the case judging a beauty contest. The last thing i can remember is when he and his wife were about to die cause someone turned an elevator on and it was about to crush them. Anyone know what movie i am talking about? it's in black and white.

Mine would be Citizen Kane, Doctor Zhivago, Laurence of Arabia, and 2001: A Space Odyssy. I tried to watch these during 31 Days of Oscar and the only one I managed to sit through but changed the channel more then once and scratched my head wondering what the heck it was I was watching is 2001, the others were so boring I gave up within the first half hour, well got half way through LOA and Dr. Zhivago before realizing that an evening banging my head against a wall or watching paint dry would be more entertaining. I guess for some these are great films, to each his own but for me I wouldn't waste my time on any of them ever again, boooorrrring. -
Does anyone else think it's really weird that "Summer Under the Stars" this year is featuring both Donna Reed AND Deborah Kerr, yet they aren't showing From Here to Eternity? I've been waiting years to see that film, but I don't think TCM has played it in the last 3 years or more! Does anyone know what's up?
-
Some actors/actresses are listed on http://www.reelclassics.com/. Does anyone know Gena Rowlands address, by any chance? Or Harriet Andersson (more recently in Dogville but she was in several of Ingmar Bergman's films)? Or Catherine Deneuve? Thanks in advance!

Can anyone tell me which of her movies TCM has in its library? I tried the search function, but it never works for me...I always receive some message saying "the page you're looking for is no longer here". Anyway, if anyone can help I'd really appreciate it!!!
