I just watched the movie Rendezvous on TCM and was surprised to find that it had been edited in an unusual way. In a scene where Rosalind Russell stands up Cesar Romero at a restaurant, she points him out to William Powell as "that man in the ****** uniform." The name of the country seems to be purposely garbled. I have the movie TiVO'ed so I rode back and forth over this bit until I was sure there was no way to really know what she said. If I had to guess, I'd say "Russian," but hell, she could have been saying "Dutch" for all I know. I realize that this is a pretty obscure movie, but I would be interested if anyone had any information about it. Who edited the film and why? Charlie

I have to admit that KANE leaves me cold, though I admire the artistry and camera-work. 2001 has always struck me as best viewed on the big screen and no doubt mind-altering substances would help. Re: CASABLANCA, I saw it for the umpteenth time when it came around theatrically for its 50th anniversary. I brought a friend who'd never seen it before. While I"ve always preferred epics (LAWRENCE OF ARABIA, GWTW, et al) on the big screen, this film too felt like a different movie. Watching in the dark, with a crowd, on a big screen - it was like a whole new experience. I couldn't get over the difference it makes in one's emotional reactions. I remember the first time I saw MANCHURIAN, I wasn't very taken with it; now, I think it's brilliant. Give it another chance - for Angela Lansburry's chilling performance if nothing else. -
Whoops, sorry I missed one: read somewhere that the '40 version of WATERLOO BRIDGE is in the works with hopefully the '31 version on it as a bonus.

Good list of movies! In addition to the upcoming releases of TWO FOR THE ROAD and the Esther Williams box set, I am pretty confident we'll see THE HEIRESS soon. It's an admired, award-winning and loved film by huge talents.

My dad has always looked like he could be Alan Alda's brother. They also seem a lot alike personality-wise, from what I've read on Alan Alda. When my daughter was 2 the Olsen Twins hit tv and several people said she looked just like them. -

I haven't seen the new movie yet, but I would definetly recommend the book. It is darker than the original movie, but very good, and there are some very funny poems about the 'bad' children. And the second book "Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator" is just as good. I wish they had made that into a movie instead of yet another remake. But I am interested in seeing what Depp does with the part since he's done so well with his other roles. May wait for DVD rental on this one.

We always watched the classics on Channel 9WOR & 11WPIX in NY as far back as i can remember. Dad was a big fan of science fiction & horror so we watched all the outer space/UFO films, giant bugs & monsters. And I always remember watching Abbott & Costello movies. Mom liked musicals and comedy, so between them, I got a good variety. Since I started watching TCM I have seen LOTS of movies I had missed, and I hope to keep discovering 'new' classics for a long time.

I dont think there are many of the type of people you're talking about on these boards. From what I've seen, people here know their films andthe stars very well, and wouldn't just say a movie was "the greatest" without seeing it, just based on a particular star.

I do agree with you Jalanna about Citizen Kane. I always wonder how this movie is "the greatest American Movies of all times". I know many people who have never even heard of this movie and I also know many people who don't find this movie anything that special. As a matter of fact I have never run into any one around say "This is the greatest movie to me or I love this movie" That's why I wonder how this movie is the Greatest. On the other hand I DO know many people who love and adore movies such as Casablanca or Gone with the wind. I also don't enjoy the movies Graduate and Dr. Strangelove either. -
Hi Jasmineleaf. I am new here too. I love old movies! There is nothing like a good black and white movie. I love Cary Grant movies and Fred Astaire. Some of my favorites are Holiday and Swing Time.
-
I love Cary Grant! You can look at my name on this thing and tell I am obsessed. He fits the description of tall, dark, and handsome better than anyone I have ever seen.
-
I first really started watching classics this past November (2004). We had just got satellite and I had always heard my mom say that most all the old movies are good. I started watching them and now I like them better than recent movies.

Hi Aiden671, If you go to movieflix.com there are over 100 silent films available for download. Most are free and in the public domain. The Golem is listed there but I don't think it is one of the "freebies", probably because of a copyrighted soundtrack. These are, if most cases, public domain versions of the films, so they won't have the clarity and quality of the restored editions. But it is a good way to get familiar with some of the basics of the silent era. Just don't expect too much.... Also, in case you are interested, The American Memories page of the Library of Congress (follow the technology and applied sciences link) has a huge collection free early Thomas Edison films. I've not counted them but there must be at least a few hundred of them, including about 20 Westinghouse Works films, from the National Film Preservation list. Watching those films is to watch the true birth of the cinema.... If I find more I will let you know.... Roy
