  1. > I will again state that I think they are making programming changes due to budget.

    TB,

When a film is pulled at the last minute is usually either because a rights issue was discovered or because the studio/distributor thought they would have a digital tape for broadcast but weren't able to deliver. We went down this road a few years back when TCM was starting to air films from the old Columbia film library.

There's a post from TCMProgrammr in the message board archives that backs the above statement up.

As for it being budget concerns that is causing this, only serves to scare posters that TCM is having monetary problems.

Can you provide back up evidence, a post from staff of TCM or a news article that states that TCM is pulling films because they have had to pay unexpectedly for three guest hosts?

You have asked not only me but other posters to provide back up evidence on other topics, so it seems only fair to ask the question in return.

  2. > How does one access any of the October schedule, let alone the all of it some people appear to have access to?

    Skimpole,

The schedule is still under construction (so to speak). The OP found it with only about 20% of the schedule posted. Shortly after that, it was replaced with the zombie page.

Some have been using actor's names to try and fill out the things we know about the October schedule- that horror films will be on the schedule because of Halloween and that Buster Keaton is the Star of the Month.

The full October schedule will probably be posted in the coming days.

As always, a little patience is usually the best way to deal with it.

  3. You should probably also check your DVR. With Comcast, if you have 85% or more of the DVR filled up, the schedule on the television starts populating with To Be Announced listings.

With Comcast, if this happens, you either have to delete some stuff on the DVR or call customer service and they will reset your DVR and that should clear up the problem but they will tell you not to fill your DVR up so much.

    Just a thought.

  4. > The notes section from the AFI catalog has "Portions of the film were shot on location in Montrose and Reseda, CA, and at the Angeles Crest Highway." For what it's worth.

Reseda is in the San Fernando Valley while Montrose is part of the San Gabriel Valley (they aren't near each other). Montrose is closer to the Angeles Crest Highway but there were no meat packing or processing plants in either Reseda, Montrose or on the Angeles Crest Highway back in the day.

The San Fernando Valley was home to agriculture and after the war went on a major building spree becoming home to millions.

The city of Vernon, however, was home to Farmer John's and other meat packing and processing plants.

  5. > I just wonder if this "Rave" preview is the kind of event the new management of Grauman's is planning to promote in the future. Yikes.

Hopefully not. According to news reports, it was Grauman's personnel who called the cops when they saw the crowd was growing bigger.

The DJ was supposed to be playing to a private premiere party but earlier in the day, he tweeted to his followers that he would be at the *Electric Daisy* premiere and suggested they all come for a big block party.

He says he was surprised so many showed up.

The LAPD is not happy by most accounts.

  6. > This needless attack on her is beyond the pale.

Welcome to the current day TCM Message boards where certain posters are more interested in writing outlandish statements written to get a rise out of others than talking about the films, stars, directors, TCM, etc with regard to any one else's feelings.

  7. > In fact it looks like beginning in August the whole Saturday matinee feel will be swept away.

    Ginger,

August is the annual *Summer Under the Stars* festival where each day a different star is highlighted for 24 hours.

I believe the serials return to the schedule in September.

  8. > Was it that bad?

Yeah, it was. It's all back in the message board archives. Between the *Underground* video promoting the fact that it was a new feature and Rob Zombie was the host and the "spyglass" girl in the monthly promo (TCM used to have monthly promos that highlighted what was featured each month), the community went into warp drive negativity that was unprecedented then and now.

  9. > I don't think I've ever felt this much negativity for a personality on tcm.

You should have been here back when TCM Underground was being promo'd and Rob Zombie was the host.

Talk about negativity. This place was all burned to the ground and had to be rebuilt.

    I'm not exaggerating.

  10. One thing to keep in mind about the guest hosts, they are here because they want to help Robert O and TCM during Robert O's hiatus.

They have stepped in without much notice (at least the initial three).

Doing a week's worth of wraparounds is not easy, even if it is over a two or more days. It's being away from home, away from a daily routine, away from family and friends. It's a lot of text to remember and if you aren't used to reading off a teleprompter, it can be a bit intimidating.

Some have been away from the cameras and others are better talking to fans in a ballroom than talking into a camera with just the TCM crew in attendance.

Anyone who saw Mickey Rooney talking to Robert O during his interview at the TCM Film Festival (it was telecast), knows that Mickey isn't in the best of health and is not always easy to keep on point.

As to why they don't talk more about the behind-the-scenes of the movies they are introducing, many have said, both on the record and during their *Private Screenings* interviews, they aren't comfortable talking about what happened on movies they weren't in or weren't on the set to witness.

They are pinch hitting for Robert O because they are his friends and they are friends of the channel.

Some, like Jane Powell, have been retired for many years. But she answered the call and flew down to Atlanta (without much notice if Sansfin is right, and I believe her post about it is pretty on point) to guest host a week because she cares about Robert O and TCM.

The least we can do is recognize that these guest hosts have aged and that there is a big difference from sitting down with Robert O and answering questions that you know you will be asked and trying to fill Robert O's shoes while he gets his strength back.

They are being gracious in taking the time to do so. At the very least, we can try to be as gracious in return.

  11. This morning I moved a thread down here started by a new poster, goodtaste. I moved it down here because some of the remarks the poster made.

This evening, the thread is missing but on the main page, goodtaste's name still appears. When you click it on it, up comes the reply from poster, scsu1975 which isn't objectionable, but not the original post from goodtaste.

I just wanted to let you know as it is confusing and I don't mean for scsu (Rich) to get a warning.

  12. > Ben has the routine down, no offence to the guest hosts, but they have been out of their element and it would have been better to go with the home team player in the first place.

Ben is also taking over Robert O's hosting duties this summer at various public musical functions (Philharmonic orchestras and movie music evenings) around the country that Robert O has done for the last several summers.

For more information about the cities and dates, be sure to catch the *This week in movie news* promo on TCM.

  13. TCM announced earlier today:

Ben Mankiewicz will serve as guest host for TCM's Summer Under the Stars festival in August. Ben will introduce the 9th installment of the festival while Robert Osborne is taking a break.

This year's Summer Under the Stars features several people for the first time, including day-long schedules with Orson Welles, Joanne Woodward and Peter Lawford.

Summer Under the Stars will also highlight Marlon Brando, Bette Davis, Jimmy Stewart, Humphrey Bogart, Cary Grant, Joan Crawford and, on what would have been her 100th birthday, Lucille Ball.

  14. > Then, on Monday August 1st we begin Summer Under the Stars.

  15. > I don't think MR. SMITH GOES TO WASHINGTON was, or should be, remade.

Wasn't a TV movie but it was a bomb, *Billy Jack Goes to Washington* and got pulled almost immediately due to rights issues over the script. Seems Tom Laughlin and Delores Taylor forgot to secure the rights before making their film which pulled heavily from the original script.

    Oops.
