  1. Top 5, well no surprises here, well maybe: *The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance* *The Searchers* *She Wore a Yellow Ribbon* *The Wild Bunch* *Ride the High Country* Incredibly Honorable Mention: *Stagecoach* *Fort Apache* *The Big Trail* *Hell's Hinges* *Red River* *Three Godfathers* *Once Upon a Time in the West* *Dances with Wolves* *Silverado* (yeah, it has flaws but it's a rousing tale) *Thunderheart* As always, in no particular order except the top two of the original list.
  2. Joe, Thanks so much. They look very much in love in their wedding picture. While they couldn't make their marriage(s) last, they never lost the love. She had a letter from Burton on her nightstand. He wrote to her in early August, 1984. He told her he wanted to come home to her and spend the rest of his life with her. The letter arrived just after she received the news that he had died. She kept that letter on her nightstand from that day on.
  3. She also had the plot next to Richard Burton (her true love) in the small Welsh village where he was raised and is buried. She hoped to be placed next to him when the time came. Probably makes no matter. She is reunited with him now.
  4. Hey Joe, Any chance you have a photo or three of Elizabeth with her one true love, Richard Burton?
  5. Barb, If you haven't read Furious Love, the story of her and Richard Burton and their life-long love for one another, be sure you read it. It's a wonderful book and shows a side of Elizabeth and Richard we have rarely seen.
  6. For everyone who knows (or thinks they do) Liz and Dick but want a behind-the-scenes, rewarding and heartbreaking look behind the story of Elizabeth and Richard, I can't recommend Furious Love high enough. Theirs was a passion that burned bright and never went out. She has the burial plot next to Burton's in the small Welsh village he was from. Her wish was that she buried there so that she could be reunited with her one true love. RIP, Elizabeth. You gave us a lifetime of memories.
  7. X, I believe you are looking for *Here Comes Mr. Jordan* starring Robert Montgomery. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0033712/ It was remade in the mid-1970s as *Heaven Can Wait* starring Warren Beatty. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0077663/ Welcome to the boards!
  8. James Wong Howe was the first cinematographer who ever caught me eye and made me want to know more about him and the art of cinematography. Others I have relished: Greg Toland, William Daniels, Bert Glennon, Winton Hoch, Nestor Almendros, Sven Nykist, Lazlo Kovacs, Conrad Hall, Vilmos Zsigmond and Bert's son, James, are the ones that come to mind right now.
  9. I'm sorry you're not happy with the schedule as of late. John Wayne has recently been on the schedule from *Stagecoach* to *The Flying Leathernecks* to *The Searchers* on Saturdays, afternoons and prime-time. *Gunga Din* is coming up on *The Essentials*. Red Skelton, I believe, is coming next month as part of the Civil War salute. The *Employee Picks* this month have been delightful!. From the wonderful *Safe in Hell* to *King's Row* to *Riffi*, we've been getting lots of classic treasures. Last week was a bonanza of pre-codes and Saturday evening included *Tarzan, the Ape Man* and *The Devil Doll* and a good old fashioned western, *The Tall T* with Randolph (cue chorus) Scott. Jean Harlow is SOTM with her films being featured in prime-time every Tuesday this month. Next month is Ray Milland and May brings us Esther Williams. The online schedule may have glitches these days in it but it is worth checking out. That way you won't miss all these great gems TCM has scheduled!
  10. Rich, Welcome back, you have no idea how much I have missed this thread. Loved the Gary Lockwood/HAL comment! Almost did a spit take!
  11. *So I decided to go this year and I hope it's really worth it because it is pretty pricey (my other half almost had a heart attack when he found out the cost. Needless to say he's not going)* Bill, I don't think you have too worry too much about the Festival living up to your hopes. It will probably do that and a whole lot more!
  12. Hey Chief, Yeah, that list will get changed and changed and changed again before the Festival gets here. Must-sees for me are: *To Kill a Mockingbird* *Reds* *The Cameraman* *The Laugh-O-grams* *Becket* Robert O's talk with Peter O'Toole *Night Flight* Those are then ones I am most hoping aren't scheduled against one another!
  13. At this point knowing it will change once the schedule with panels and films is posted: * BECKET (1964)* * CAROUSEL (1956)* * Citizen Kane (1941) Opening remarks probably* * Dodsworth (1936)* * FANTASIA (1940)* * Guns of Navarone (1961)* * Hoop-La (1933)* * La Dolce Vita (1960)* * Network (1976) Opening remarks* * Night Flight (1933)* * Pennies from Heaven (1981)* * Reds (1981)* * Shaft (1971)* * Shall We Dance (1937)* * Silly Symphonies* * The Cameraman (1928)* * The Constant Nymph (1943)* * The Day the Earth Stood Still (1951)* * The Devil is a Woman (1935)* * The Laugh-O-grams (Disney's earliest fims)* * The Merry Widow (1925)* * The Outlaw Josey Wales (1976)* * The Unsinkable Molly Brown (1964)* * This is the Night (1932)* * TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD (1962)* * Went the Day Well? (1942)*
  14. Besides the Bond films mentioned, *The Spy Who Came in from the Cold* with Richard Burton is quite good.
  15. *I believe I've heard Osborne talking about Barrymore "before and after his accident."* *But Barrymore was crippled due to arthritis.* While Barrymore suffered from RA, he had an accident that resulted in his breaking his hip. The break didn't heal properly and that combined with the RA, caused Barrymore to finally end up in a wheelchair.
  16. *Not trying to be disrespectful. I have posted in this thread many times before and He never said anything about objecting. I was never under the impression that this was his own exclusive thread. I thought that anyone was allowed to contribute.* Jeffrey, I'm not disputing that. I'm just saying that your reasons for posting in this thread have changed because the image code has changed in the General Discussions Thread. Because of that, I'm suggesting you check with Mongo to be sure he is comfortable with the situation or if he would prefer, given the restrictions in the General Discussions with the image code, if he would prefer you start your own thread. It's his thread and his call. Just trying to keep the peace despite the problems we have to deal with due to the upgrade.

  18. Jeffrey, I understand but you should check with Mongo to be sure he is cool with the idea. If the image posting code continues to remain a problem in the General Discussions forum, it may be better for you to start a thread here for your photos. That way your fans have a thread where they can follow your image postings. That's all I am suggesting.....
  19. To continue the campaign to get Joel McCrea as SOTM in 2011, here's an interview he did when he was feted at the Telluride Film Festival in 1982: http://www.brightlightsfilm.com/64/64joelmccreaiv.html There's plenty of time to make Joel SOTM this year. Joel McCrea as SOTM, *Secret of the Incas*, *El Cid* on TCM those are my dreams. But Joel McCrea occupies the #1 spot. Here's hoping.......
  20. Jeffrey, I understand your need to post images since the image code is not working in the General Discussions forum. Perhaps, instead of hijacking Mongo's thread which is devoted to candid photos of stars of all eras, you might consider starting your own thread here devoted to your love of silent stars? Just a thought.....
  21. Is Peter Bogdanovich returning as presenter this year? If so, perhaps he and Robert O could introduce *Kane* together and talk about the film. I can't imagine TCM presenting the film on the big screen (whatever the venue) without Bogdanovich being there.
  22. *OK, thanks for letting me know. But hasn't Mongo still been successfully posting photos? How does he do this?* Because the image code we have been using for the last few years still works in the other forums. The problem, it no longer works in this forum. The last big upgrade we had caused the same problem. That's why Mongo moved his thread to the Films and Filmmakers Forum in the first place. The more things change, the more some stay the same around here.
  23. *Hey, now I am not able to post any photos all of a sudden. And there is no visible preview either. What the devil is going on here?* Jeffrey, There has been no preview option or way to post images in the General Discussions forum since the upgrade a week and a half ago. The mods have not replied for several days about what is being worked on and nor what is a priority. They are aware, thanks to posts in the Tech Forum, about these issues. When they will be fixed, well, we are at the mercy of the Mods to know for sure. I suspect the mantra will continue to be: be patient, as that is always the mantra no matter what the problem. It is very disconcerting concerning the amount of warranted backlash about the Upgrade that there is so little communication from the Mods about the problems or the fixes. But, after all these years, that's the kind of treatment we have come to expect.
  24. *Chaney, I don't believe all the songs Fred sang were written with him in mind* There's a book called Dancing in the Dark: A Cultural History of the Depression that goes into detail about Porter, Gershwin and Astaire. They were all working at the same time and when melded together, especially on film, the result was often more magically than what could be created on Broadway. Astaire didn't inspire either Porter or the Gershwins but what he was able to accomplish on film with their music still moves us almost 80 years later. I just finished the book and while I found it a bit too esoteric about the literature of that era, I did enjoy the chapters on film, popular music and theater.
  25. Jon, FYI, According to Nitrate Won't Wait, the RKO vault fire that destroyed *Kane's* negative occurred in the 1950s not the 1980s.
