  1. James Gleason was also a recent inductee into Mongo's "In the Spotlight" thread here in General Discussions.
  2. I thought you and Liz told us this nightmare would end at the end of February?>> Fred, Sorry if you misunderstood. I thought I said that the 31 Days of Oscar went through March 2nd this year. Because February is always a short month, the 31 Days celebration always goes into the first few days of March. I agree that Night of the Lepus must be for the Underground. From Fred's list the following films are part of the 31 Days of Oscar on March 1 and 2: Funny Lady Crimes and Misdemeanors Radio Days My Life as a Dog Children of a Lesser God The Dresser Kotch Exodus Lawrence of Arabia Maverick Unforgiven A Few Good Men Backdraft On Monday March 3rd, TCM spotlights, in prime-time, pre-code films including a new documentary on the Pre-Code era. Sounds like fun! Message was edited by: lzcutter
  3. Kim, Head aired on the Underground last year. It really has not stood the test of time very well. LOL!
  4. Kenneth, "Where do I Begin" aka "Love Story" is from the film Love Story not The Godfather. Though the idea of playing the song over scenes from The Godfather is rather surreal. "Windmills of Your Mind", I blieve was written by Alan and Marilyn Bergman and Maurice LeGrande for the original Thomas Crown Affair.
  5. Filmlover, We will leave the light on and keep an eye out for you. You've not missed a Challenge yet and I hope this time to be no different!
  6. Kim. The front home page has the listing below but in checking the schedule, it looks like it only pertains to evening hours (8:00 EST, 6:00 CST, 5:00 PST). The early morning and day time hours are a smorgesboard of years!
  7. I'm sure you and others have noted but I think it bears repeating with all the controversary of Oscar month. Each day is a different decade: Each Monday is 1920s/1930s Oscar nominated or winning films Each Tuesday is 1940s Each Wednesday is 1950s Each Thursday is 1960s Each Friday is 1970s Each Saturday is 1980s and each Sunday is 1990s/2000s So, plan your schedules accordingly!
  8. Top 5 Film Directors: 1) John Ford 2) Howard Hawks 3) Billy Wilder 4) William Wellman 5) Alfred Hitchcock
  9. Mark, Glad you and Fred are enjoying Broadway Melody. It aired last June on TCM and I saw it for the first time in years. It looked and sounded great. I became a big Bessie Love fan when I initially saw this film years and years ago. Fred, I will try to find out who did the restoration. My hunch is that it was Warners Bros but if I find that to be an error I'll let you know!
  10. Favorite performance by a child? Hands down, Mary Badham as Jean Louis "Scout" Finch in To Kill a Mockingbird" Phillip Alford as her brother Jem and John Megna as their friend Dill Harris (based on Harper Lee's childhood friend, Truman Capote) are very good as well.
  11. The endings of "Cinema Paradiso" and "To Kill a Mockingbird". Cinema Paradiso ending speaks to the film lover in all of us. and "Mockingbird's" ending, never has the backlot felt more universal as when Miss Jean Louis Finch walks Mr. Arthur Radley home.
  12. Hyedenny, If you are a long time TCM viewer than you know that February is the 31 Days of Oscar where TCM celebrates all things Oscar by airing nominated and winning films from 1927 up to 2006. Saturday during the day was filled with films that were nominated for Best Visual Effects. Tonight is films from the 90s/00s. Each day has a theme. On March 3rd, the Oscar celebration will end and TCM will return to its usual programming. Hang in there.
  13. Here's a link to other threads about the Naked Prey: http://forums.tcm.com/jive/tcm/thread.jspa?messageID=8046195 As for the version that TCM aired, they try to show films unedited. However, if the studio or distributor sends them the edited version they have no choice but to run the copy they are sent. They try to get the unedited version and air it at a later date. It is not a conspiracy or anything like that. Sometimes these things happen.
  14. If the theater is using a platter projection system (not a digital projector), it may be that the bulb in the projector is old. If that's the case, the film will appear dark because the bulb is not projecting enough light to the screen.
  15. Bio, Your Oscar threads weren't moved. The ones you started yesterday in Trivia are still there. However, Mr6 (I think it was him) thought you might get more responses if they were posted in Hot Topics as it is Oscar time and TCM is celebrating the 31 Days of Oscar. So, he started two new threads on the same subjects in Hot Topics giving you credit for originally posting them. And folks (including me) have been responding to the Hot Topics threads. Hope this all makes sense!
  16. Moviebuffer, Congratulations on your schedule. I know it isn't always easy being first. Thanks for biting the bullet and jumping in! Anyone else want to join in the fun?
  17. Dear friends, Twenty years after a promise to the archivist and Asian cinema scholar Stephen Gong, working in collaboration with the wonderful people at the George Eastman House Film Department, and several years in the production of the DVD, I am very happy to announce the release of Sessue (The Bridge on the River Kwai) Hayakawa's silent masterpiece, THE DRAGON PAINTER. And of course, being Milestone, we even have bonus features for the bonus features including another extremely rare Hayakawa feature (produced by the legendary Thomas Ince!), still galleries, press kits and more! See below for details. This is a great time for Sessue Hayakawa with the new biography by Daisuke Miyao, a major film retrospective touring the country, and the amazing discovery of "lost" Hayakawa films by our friends at the Nederlands Filmmuseum. (Please email to me if you want the Filmmuseum's press release.) Best regards, Dennis Doros, Milestone Film & Video, Harrington Park, NJ 07640
  18. KPR, There is a section of the documentary being featured on the Frank Sinatra and Gene Kelly box set that is coming out later this winter. But it is not the entire three part documentary. TCMProgrammr, Any chance that TCM is going to broadcast this magnificent documentary in our future?
  19. This thread will have the answers you are looking for as well as a link to the media room where you can watch the TCM Remembers promos from the last few years. http://forums.tcm.com/jive/tcm/thread.jspa?messageID=8038224
  20. I loved this documentary when it was first broadcast back in the 1990s. An in-depth, engrossing look at the history of MGM studios and MGM films narrated by Patrick Stewart. I understand that this wonderful documentary that was originally produced in the 1990s has been restored and Warners Brothers is just waiting for the right time to release it on DVD. Has anyone heard if 2008 might be the year that this wonderful documentary finally comes to DVD? Who else remembers this awesome documentary? Is there any chance that TCM could air it later this year?
  21. Zaafar, I saw the Black Hole when it was originally released and I was much younger. Audience reaction was not very kind as I recall. The Black Hole was released in 1979, two years after the original Star Wars was released. It was George Lucas, by the way, who wrote and directed the original Star Wars, not Steven Spielberg. Lucas has long said that he got the idea for R2D2 and 3PO from Kurosawa's The Hidden Fortress. In that film are two bickering thieves who are traveling together. 22. Her son, Terry Melcher, passed away about four years ago. Perhaps that's who you were thinking of?
