  1. > So, my suggestion would be for TCM to hold off on an In Memorial to early to mid January and then play the spot for a couple of months. Wasn't there a thread about this last year? It's traditional at this time of the year to look back on the year that is waning and remember those who passed. TCM is not the only one that does this. Magazines, newspapers, news broadcasts, etc are all providing remembrances of those left us in 2011. It is part of our culture that we use the month of December to look back. If TCM were to hold off and run the In Memoriam tribute throughout January, how many people would question the timing and complain that it is better suited to December? Probably more than we think. Another poster mentioned the Academy's In Memoriam being in February but that is because it is part of the Academy Awards and not a separate, stand-alone tribute. It airs only once during the Academy Awards broadcast.
  2. > There should be volumes devoted to MGM's other genres *MGM: When the Lion Roared* is a multi-hour documentary that looks at the history of MGM and the movies produced under that banner from the silents through the auction of the early 1970s.
  3. > Robert Osbourne's commentary about Mr. Powell did not appear until well into the 2nd week of December Robert O returned to TCM on Dec. 1st and his nightly commentary has aired each night since. The first night of William Powell's turn as SOTM (Dec. 1st), TCM aired *Jewel Robbery* and *The Kennel Murder Case* and Robert O was front and center on the commentary and has been ever since.
  4. *Brian's Song* *Duel* *That Certain Summer* *The Neon Ceiling* *The Glass House* *The Execution of Pvt. Slovick* *Farewell to Manzanar* *Go Ask Alice* *The Man Without a Country* *Crisis at Central High* *My Sweet Charlie* *QB VII*
  5. *To Kill a Mockingbird* Horton Foote distilled the wonderful story by Harper Lee down to a two hour storyline that movie goers could not only like but one they could identify with. That it mirrored a tumultuous time in the Civil Rights era only made the story it told more heart felt and more personal. "Jean Louise. Jean Louise, stand up. Your father's passing." 'If you just learn a single trick, Scout, you'll get along a lot better with all kinds of folks. You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view... Until you climb inside of his skin and walk around in it." "Hey Boo" "Miss Jean Louise, Mr. Arthur Radley. I believe he already knows you."
  6. Merry Christmas to the wonderful TCM staff, without whom, there would be no channel. They work hard to bring us the goods and while complaints tend to run rampant from time to time, it's nice to take a moment to appreciate all the hard work they do so that we can enjoy the movies and the original productions. So, Merry Christmas to Robert O (it is so wonderful to have you back), Ben M, Alec B, Tom Brown, Charlie, Genevieve, Scott, Pola, Sean, Heather and everyone else from the front office to behind the camera to those who work the Film Festival and the Cruise, a bajillion thanks for all you do and may your holidays be bright with joy and happiness!

  8. Rich, That was great!! You had me at "How come" and kept me smiling through the whole review (revue). A million thanks and can't wait for the next one! (And no keyboards were injured while reading your post as I kept the drinks at arms length. I'm going to go have one now in your honor!)
  9. Merry Christmas, Barb! May you, Rudy and Rod have a Merry one! And may BronxMom enjoy the holiday cheer as well!
  10. Merry Christmas, Chief! May you know in your heart the warmth you brought all of us courtesy of this thread. May your Holiday Season be bright with the smiles of friends.
  11. Merry Christmas, smileys! Just wanted to let you know that I was thinking of you this season!
  12. > Coming soon: Jail Bait Just in time for the holidays! Rich, I've got plenty of Diet Coke in stock should a spit take ensue!
  13. It's actually *Beyond Tomorrow* (with the incomparable Harry Carey, Sr) and good news, it's on TCM on Dec. 23rd at 8:00 am (EST)!
  14. > I'm sure Hollywood knew about the affair. Most of Hollywood and the press knew about the affair but didn't publicize it. It was a different era in regards to that with the press. And Louise Tracy knew that Tracy was at Hepburn's in his final days. Both ladies thought he would be more comfortable there and took shifts caring for him.
  15. > Not only having an affair but BOLDLY talking about their affair. Not a good situation. Hepburn didn't talk about the affair until much later in her life. She didn't talk about it while Tracy was alive and not for many years after his death. I don't think she started talking publicly about it until after the late 1970s when Garson Kanin published his book, Tracy and Hepburn. Up till then, the majority of Americans didn't know about the affair. Hepburn was very aware of Mrs. Tracy and she was always aware of Louise Tracy's feelings and her status as Tracy's wife and tried not say anything or do anything that would embarrass Louise Tracy. She and Louise Tracy took shifts caring for Tracy in his final days.
  16. > I typed 'Baldwin' into the search box up at the right corner but no threads resulted from the search. What am I doing wrong? Dark, On the main page of the Forums, at the top, is the Search box for the Forums. It says: Search All Forums You type the keyword you are looking for in there and it should bring up threads for that keyword, if there are any.
  17. The easiest thing is to probably use the search function but here are some threads just from this year: http://forums.tcm.com/thread.jspa?messageID=8579423 http://forums.tcm.com/thread.jspa?messageID=8533805 http://forums.tcm.com/thread.jspa?messageID=8592139 http://forums.tcm.com/thread.jspa?messageID=8555809 http://forums.tcm.com/thread.jspa?messageID=8540265 http://forums.tcm.com/thread.jspa?messageID=8572672 http://forums.tcm.com/thread.jspa?messageID=8505372 http://forums.tcm.com/thread.jspa?messageID=8593966 http://forums.tcm.com/thread.jspa?messageID=8528338
  18. Mimi, *Baby* was part of this year's *Essentials*. They typically film about 16-18 episodes each year. But since *The Essentials* has more time slots than that, they do present encore presentations throughout the fall.
  19. > Did you catch little Frankie in Roaring Rails the other night? I didn't catch it in real time but I have it on my DVR! Glad to hear that you and Glo and family are doing well. Larry "Bud" and Jimmy Chan have, hopefully, been keeping out trouble as well.

  21. Mighty Mo, Welcome back! I can only imagine that Glo and the little Glo-Los have been keeping you busy! How are their various dance routines going? Are you and Gloria having fun driving them around to all their gigs? Hopefully, one of these days, they'll be going to Broadway and you and Gloria can get some rest!
  22. Calvin, Thank you for the list! That's great. And I agree with you, it's likely one or more studios and the lack of digital masters that is responsible for the delay. But, one thing I have is faith in TCM and its programming department. As I learned with *Six Graves*, it may take a while (and longer than many anticipate) but if TCM can make it, they do. Here's hoping for Joel McCrea in 2012!
  23. > It's kind of brave of you that you admit that you watch Mad Men. I don't watch movies on AMC but I adore *Mad Men* and have been watching since the beginning. I am also a big *Breaking Bad* fan and enjoy *The Walking Dead* and am trying to enjoy *Hell on Wheels*.
  24. > Too bad that Edmund Gwenn isn't still alive to do something about it. Ah, but Santa comes in many forms.
  25. Dear Santa, All I want for Christmas is for Joel McCrea to be SOTM sometime in 2012. Thank you.
