  1. Spence, Welcome back! If you check both Hot Topics and this forum, you will find at least three other threads devoted to Winona's turn as guest host. Most agree with you she was terrific.
  2. > By the way, do you know what the "save" option is all about in the area where it shows what threads you are watching? Unfortunately, I don't. And I probably should also mention that there have been occasions when threads have disappeared for no reason but that usually happens because of an upgrade or a board hiccup. It doesn't happen on a regular basis but it has been known to happen.
  3. CFM, Usually, the only time a thread gets deleted is when the WebAdmin deems it inappropriate or it violates the Code of Conduct. The message board archives go back to the early 2000s when the main forums were created by TCM. There are still a couple of posters from back then that are still here. The archives can be accessed by using the search function on the main forum page. Just type in a keyword, set the date to All and happy reading. Edited by: lzcutter for semantics
  4. > And Izcutter, in Regards to Walt Disney, it never occurred me that he too, may have experienced 'struggles' with bankers and bank loans ... thank goodness for the 'help' from this A.P. Giannini (BofA) ... Ugaarte, You are more than welcome. I didn't know the extent of Walt's struggles to bring *Snow White* to the screen or his struggles during WW2 to keep his studio in business until I read Neal Gabler's book on Walt a few years back.
  5. More disembodied heads for smileys! But, I have to admit, they are used to great advantage in both lobby cards. Very atmospheric! Thanks for sharing them with us!
  6. Chief, I'm so glad to see you doing a "Buster" gallery this month. Was *The General* poster done back in the late 1960s/early 1970s when Buster, the Marx Brothers, Bogey, Cagney and others were being rediscovered? It certainly has that feel to it!
  7. Joe, What a day for being born! It's kind of amazing that so many actors and characters actors were all born on this date over a variety of years. Makes me kind of wish they were all starring in a movie together. Wouldn't that have been sweet!
  8. > I wonder what Uncle Walt thought of this. It's true he was very pro-business and conservative, but like all studio owners, probably disliked and distrusted bankers. There were times when Walt didn't like the "money men" (ie, when he had to show Joe Rosenberg of Bank of America a very rough cut of *Snow White* because without a loan from BofA, he couldn't finish the film, when he was building Disneyland and had to use money from his life insurance policy to get the park funded) but he had a very good relationship with A.P. Giannini and his brother. A.P. was the founder and head of the Bank of Italy which became the Bank of America. The Gianninis' support of Disney Studios helped Walt to finish *Snow White* in time for it's premiere in December 1937. It also kept the BofAmerica's board of directors from calling in the Disney's loan during World War II when the studio was occupied by the military and Walt and his crew were making military films and propaganda films. The Gianninis came to Walt's aide again after the War when the studio was trying to get back into the non-war related film production. Walt was always at the mercy of the banks until Disneyland came along and the studio profits took a turn for the better, much better.
  9. Yancey, I think Sony still has tours of their lot (the old MGM lot). At least they did last year. Having read the book on the MGM backlot and knowing you hail from that part of the sprawling City of the Angels, I think it would be cool to get your take on the history of MGM and it's backlot. Maybe the Festival organizers could get the author of the books to give a presentation in Club TCM. That would be the next best thing!
  10. > You might be right, and I think TCM aired that film a couple of years ago. I tivo'd it within the last year from TCM and enjoyed it very much!
  11. > You might be right, and I think TCM aired that film a couple of years ago. I tivo'd it last spring from TCM and enjoyed it very much!
  12. Hollywood in April!!!! WOOH-HOO!!!! Looking forward to seeing all my TCM Festival friends!!!! Yancey, It would be great if we could figure out a way to do a MGM studio area tour with you!
  13. > Still don't have an answer to the first one but when I really sat down to think about it I want to say that MAYBE it started off with the guy being a struggling musician and the woman was maybe also a musician or a dancer and that's why they wanted their own nightclub. Classiccouple, It sure sounds like *It All Came True* with Ann Sheridan, Jeffrey Lynn and Humphrey Bogart.
  14. > Since they originally said he'd be back in October I pray this isn't just a polite stall to prevent saying he won't be coming back at all. Yancey, I think we all leaped to the conclusion that Robert O would be back in October meant he would be back on the air. We didn't stop to consider it might have meant he would be back in the studio. I hope we see him on the air in time for Thanksgiving. How cool would that be?
  15. Fred, It sounds like *It All Came True* with Ann Sheridan and Jeffrey Lynn.
  16. > Is this something the LIBRARY OF CONGRESS asked for? If not the LOC, then perhaps Warners because they would prefer to release the DVD rather and not have bootleg copies competing with their sales. Clearing the rights issues which kept this film off screens (and ultimately home video) for over fifty years couldn't have been cheap and DVD sales is one way to off-set those costs. > Can TCM really say they show movies as they were meant to be seen when the bug shows up like that? We may not like the bug, constant or not, but TCMProgrammr addressed the situation when the bug was first introduced and it is basically at the insistence of the studios to cut down on bootlegging. I'd rather have the bug than not be able to see a large variety of classic films on TCM. > On a side note... . > Can TCM really be called commercial free when it airs promos for DVDs and other TCM memorabilia? I'd rather see TCM airing channel appropriate revenue making DVD promos and memorabilia promos than have to go the revenue route of running commercials for anything in between films or during the film.
  17. > Are they afraid that scenes will be posted on Youtube? I guess any unauthorized copies will be traced back to this TCM broadcast. And likely bootlegged copies on Ebay complete with the TCM logo. It may have been a condition of the contract with the rights owner.
  18. > BTW, how did you find out the studio double-booked the film? Robbie, I have Encore Westerns and *Lonely Are the Brave* has been playing all month on Encore so I started to wonder about TCM also running the film. knowing that usually broadcast contracts are exclusive to the channel (thanks markfp2 - he used to work in broadcast!) And then TCM had to pull the film and I put two and two together.
  19. cinemanut, The studio that owns the film double booked it. It has been running on Encore Western channel for the last few weeks and they still has the broadcast rights. TCM should have pulled the trailer from rotation this past weekend but the fact they had to pull the film is not their fault. The fault belongs to the studio who double booked the film.
  20. You should probably contact the Vitaphone Project: http://www.vitaphoneproject.com/ Some of the shorts are on DVD.

  22. > And "Mr. Cutter" seems so nice.... Oh now Chief, you know he is and for the record, he likes *Dexter*, too. I guess you'll probably give me grief for liking *The Walking Dead* -the zombie show- as well. MrCutter certainly gives me grief on that one. Call me crazy but I like not your normal network fare type shows. If it helps, I adore *Mad Men*. But you probably figured that one. You know we both love Buster, especially *The Cameraman*. That was one of the highlights of the Film Festival (for both of us) seeing it with Vince G and the Nighthawks providing the musical score!
  23. Chief, I feel your pain!! In addition to Buster and besides the Prohibition documentary, I have *Boardwalk Empire* and the season premiere of *Dexter* to worry about. I think MrCutter may have to Tivo the documentary for me.
  24. Swithin, Looks to be the 1935 version: http://www.tcm.com/tcmdb/title/84472/Mystery-of-Edwin-Drood/
  25. > How about how do get the network to even show a movie on tv? Gilusa, Welcome to the forums! The best way is to use the *Suggest a Movie* forum found here: http://www.tcm.com/suggest-a-movie/index.html
