No, they forgot Harry Morgan.
They will likely get a ration of it for that oversight beginning tomorrow.
And, I'm sorry, but, like you, I thought Ellen's commercials for Penney's were not only funny but also grounded in film a bit in film.
-
It certainly felt like Robert Downey Jr's stint as a presenter was a jab at Cohen's publicity stunt.
-
I certainly thought they would go with Marty for Best Director (just because it was such a change of pace for him) and *The Artist* for Best Picture.
Of course, I was hoping George Clooney would win.
But, any way you slice it, lots of upsets tonight all the way around.
*The Artist* didn't steamroll the way it was supposed to.

> I remember how brilliant they were together in Doubt. I think Viola Davis will have many more chances.
I hope so.
-
The show started at 5:30 and ended by 8:45 making it 3 hours and 15 minutes. Not sure where the extra half hour comes in.
-
Billy Wilder gets not one but three shout-outs during the acceptance speech for Best Picture.
-
Major upset.
Meryl Streep will be nominated a few more times but will Viola Davis ever get another chance?
Why couldn't it happen in the Best Actor category instead.
-
Doug Fairbanks gets a shout-out! I love this Oscar telecast.
-
I am loving the acceptance speeches so far. This year has all been about from the heart and not about listing everyone from their agent to their gardener.
-
Just because the Cirque uses the bankrupted named theater the rest of the year is no reason to make us endure this.
-
The speeches are the best they have been in years, no long droning about thanking agents, managers, etc.
The JC Penny commercials featuring Ellen are funnier than Billy Crystal.
And The Artist is getting its butt kicked by Hugo.

> I just saw Nick Nolte. He's not aging well.
But, he still has his acting chops. Any doubts, watch HBO's new series, *Luck* where every week, Nolte provides a master class in acting.

> like Mata Hari which was heavily censored upon its re-release, another film TCM should have the Guts to show us along with Beyond the Forest
Johnbabe,
I have lost track of the number of times that posters have explained to you about *Mata Hari*. It is in an archive in Brussels and they control that copy of the film. We have no idea if there are donor restrictions on the film. We have no idea if TCM has reached out to them and been rebuffed or if the archive and TCM are working together to make a broadcast airing possible.
But to continue to blame TCM for a situation that is beyond their control is getting really old.
As for *Beyond the Forest*,. if you had read this thread you would realize that the film is tied up in rights issues that revolve around the original author's estate. Until those rights are cleared up, TCM cannot legally show the film.
To blame TCM for this rights issue problem is really beyond the pale.

Chief,
I would also love to see *Phenix City Story* story again. I've missed it when TCM ran it last.
-
slayton,
I agree with all your choices but it should be pointed out that contrary to the header on your last post, David Raksin didn't write the scores you listed:
The Prisoner of Zenda, How Green Was My Valley, and All About Eve. Of the less often aired movies, I like The Mark of Zorro, and Anastasia. I'd also like to see Airport.
Those were all the works of Alfred Newman.
-
I loved the shot of Karin looking out the doorway of the garage at night. Incredibly beautiful shot.
This is a really good movie. Thanks, TCM!

The bonus features on the BluRay include a featurette on the Schulteis notebook. Herman Schulteis kept copious notes on the effects that were used in *Fantasia* and the featurette uses pages from the notebook to help explain how some of the more complicated effects were done by hand.
The Schulteis Notebook is on display at the Walt Disney Family Museum in San Francisco.

Mark,
Running times are one of the hardest things to determine because as you mention, all the factors that hinder being able to determine a definitive running time.
The AFI Catalog of Films includes running times, release dates, etc. They were determined by multiple sources--Academy records, trade publications and LA Times and NY Times listings and reviews- so that might be a more reliable tool than IMDb.

The TCM Database uses the info from the AFI Catalog for their own database.

> But a festival once in a while isn't the same as the ongoing airing of African -American films, kind of like, feast or famine.
Ms W,
And I didn't mean to imply that it was. I was just relating a bit of TCM history.
It would be great if TCM could find a way to incorporate both.
-
> What? So when did Robert Osborne come on board. I thought he'd been the TCM host since the beginning ( of time.)
MsW,
Robert O has been the host of TCM since the channel went on the air in 1994.
*The Essentials* began with Rob Reiner doing the wrap-arounds. He did the hosting job of *The Essentials* for two seasons (I think, Kyle will chime in if I'm off by a year).
Reiner was followed by Sydney Pollack who also did two seasons.
Peter Bogdanovich was the last singular host of *The Essentials*.
After his stint, TCM went to the current co-hosting set-up that we are all familiar with.
Molly Haskell, Carrie Fisher, Rose McGowan, Alec B and now Drew Barrymore have all co-hosted *The Essentials* with Robert O.
-
> Don't know why they didn't keep it up.
It's because of the Oscars. The Oscars used to be given out in March and TCM celebrated *31 Days of Oscar* in March to coincide with the Academy.
That left February available to celebrate Black History Month.
About ten years ago, the Academy moved the Oscar ceremony up to February and TCM had to move their *31 Days of Oscar* celebration as well. (That's why the *31 Days* celebration goes into March because there aren't 31 days in February).
Because of that, TCM had to discontinue celebrating Black History Month.
The first *Race in Hollywood* festival in 2005 focused on *African-American Images on Film*.
-
*So I forgot about 3 male co-hosts?*
Finance,
As I mentioned in my post, Reiner, Pollack and Bogdanovich were *hosts* of *The Essentials* at different times, not co-hosts.
After Bogdanovich's stint as host, TCM went to a co-host format with Robert O. Molly Haskell, Carrie Fisher, Rose McGowan and Alec Baldwin have all co-hosted *The Essentials* with Baldwin having the longest co-hosting stint at three seasons.
Drew Barrymore begins her co-hosting duties next month.
Sorry for any confusion.
-
Helen,
I was a big fan of both Sydney Pollack's and Rob Reiner's stints as hosts of *The Essentials* and I put Alec B up there with them. Peter Bogdanovich never did much for me as a host despite his deep knowledge of film history. I think he suffered from the same problem as Molly Haskell, the camera just didn't like them.
It would be great if Baldwin could more one-on-one docs like the one he did on Gene Wilder. It was very enjoyable.

Dargo,
I thought Billy did a good job of channeling his inner Bob Hope (esp. in keeping the showing moving) but when it came to funny/film, the Ellen commercials were better.
And, unlike some, I don't prescribe to any group that tries to distinguish between us as a people and "those".
