  1. > ps- Eve Arden was the best, but it is disturbing to imagine her bumping uglies with (real life husband) Danny Kaye. Luckily for many, that image wouldn't be real. Eve Arden had two husbands, neither were Danny Kaye. The first one was Ned Bergen and the one that stuck was Brooks West. Danny Kaye's only wife was Sylvia Fine.
  2. Be sure to check the schedule as there are silents scattered throughout the schedule from Lon Chaney's day to others. *Silent Sundays* returns in September and Buster Keaton is Star of the Month in October so silents are still a priority to TCM.
  3. > Don't doubt yourself, VX. I feel certain it was on here, on TCM, it seems a while ago, but it was here. It was shown only once or twice. Someone here knows for certain. It's been requested, especially for days that spotlight Welles, Fontaine or O'Brien, but, so far, no cigar. My guess is, like others, that it's been shown on FMC and, for reasons known only to Fox, they prefer to keep it for their own channel.
  4. Chief, Those disembodied horses' hooves are really creepy. But Tony the Wonder Horse looks almost three dimensional!
  5. > Why is "The Long, Long Trailer" never shown letterboxed? Why is it always full screen? Can't Tcm, these great cinemaphiles, get a hold of a letterboxed print? There is no letterbox print. While the film was released in 1953, it wasn't shot in widescreen. Because of that, TCM does show it in its proper aspect ratio. It shouldn't be letterboxed.
  6. > I've often wondered if it's the lighting and the fact that they're often in b&w makes a difference? That's part of it. Another major part is the star system and the studio itself. Stars back then were photographed at home usually dressed to the hilt, hair done and make up on. These photos were called "candid" and were used to show the public that the stars were really just normal people who lounged around their lavish homes just as the normal movie goer did. But those "candid" photos were far from reality. Also, too, the studio publicity departments made sure that stars were dressed to the hilt for any occasion where there might be cameras and they were very good at squelching unflattering photos or compromising photos. Thus, we tend to have filtered view of the stars of that era compared to today's stars who dress more comfortable, do go out not dressed to the hilt and the tabloids that are always ready to expose a star in an unflattering photo or compromising situation.
  7. For some reason I remember *Greed* starting in San Francisco before moving down to Death Valley. But my memory isn't what it used to be. The downside of getting older, I guess.
  8. MsG, What a beauty! Do you know when the stamp goes on sale. I must get some!
  9. Chief, I know the *Lawless Frontier* poster is very stylized but I love it. Not sure why, but it caught my eye this morning when I saw it and about 12 hours later, I still love it. Thank you for this great gallery!! So many gems that don't always get the exposure they deserve but now, thanks to your keen eye, we get to enjoy them! All hail, K! (sorry for the homage to *Men in Black* but I thought it fitting).
  10. > Lol, sorry about the thread title what more can I say then I like to make a memorable first impression in regards to something I enjoy. Well, you should be aware that this place is moderated by WebAdmins and it has rules. So, if your thread disappears or gets locked, it's likely be because the WebAdmin doesn't share your enthusiasm for making first impressions.
  11. > You're welcome. I understand the love for O'Brien and Carey - but I really thought you'd take to the poster for San Fernando Valley too. Chief, It made me a tad homesick. How's that song go: "makin' the San Fernando Valley my home!"
  12. Scsu, You owe me a new keyboard and some alcohol! That may be the best response you've written - combining three different out there posts into one and making it funny- pure genius as only you can do!!
  13. > Anyway, thanks TCM for shelling out thousands of dollars to keep him on year after year: it is money well-spent. His unending charisma and Svengali-like charm pull in big numbers I am sure. Besides, I'm sure every film that needs to be preserved has been so, just let the rest rot on their volatile silver-nitrate stock. And who wants to free up the rights issues to countless Paramount and Universal titles we haven't seen in years? JG, As was pointed out in that other thread, TCM's hiring of Ben M does not mean that TCM has less money to spend on film preservation. That's like comparing oranges and kumquats and serves no real purpose except to get folks riled up again. Like any business, each department at TCM has its own budget and Ben is considered part of the talent budget. By this point, I think everyone at TCM City is well aware that you don't like Ben so why keep belaboring that point? We get your point. We really, really do.
  14. > Mickey Rooney would be great to help fill in for Robert Osborne in his abscence. I wonder if anyone with any say-so has thought of this. Mickey, unfortunately, is not in the best of health these days. He was in a wheelchair at the TCM Film Festival and needed the help of an aide to get around. Also, why he is quite the character, he was not easy to keep on point during the on-air interview that Robert O did and was often going off on tangents related to other things. None of this is meant to take away from Mickey or from his legacy. It is just to provided information about the idea of his as a guest host.
  15. Oh Chief!!!! George O'Brien and Harry Carey and all this beautiful artwork! Oh Chief!!!!! A million and one thanks!!!! I, as always, "heart" you!!! (It's okay, MrCutter knows why and he, too, thinks their beautiful).
  16. It's a remake of *It Happened One Night*. The title you are looking for is *You Can't Run Away From It* http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0049973/
  17. > Does Turner own MGM's films before 1986 or not? Time Warner owns the pre-1986 MGM library. They acquired it from Ted Turner in the mid-1990s when Turner merged his media empire with Time-Warner. As MGM, the studio did have a distribution deal with United Artists for quite some time and some of the UA films were not part of the pre-1986 film library so MGM still has the rights to many of them. In addition, MGM did a number of independent productions beginning in the 1960s that may not have been part of the pre-1986 library. Lastly, MGMHD may also rent titles for their HD network.
  18. > I have no way of knowing if this is true, or a joke by Mankiewicz, or not, but an individual that I trust told me that she and her husband were at a restaurant where Ben Mankiewicz and his wife were, and that Mankiewicz and wife were laughing and bragging to their dinner guests that they create ids on the TCM message boards to promote Ben, as he does not have many employment options available outside of TCM. And I have a cat named Bucky who was out on the town the other night with the other cats in his posse and he said he overheard you saying the same thing that you attribute to Ben M. That's the great thing about gossip - you never have to prove it.
  19. > You are partially right about your impression that my post was meant as a joke. The part about Ben cringing at the thought of work is the 'joking' part of my impression that i talked about earlier in my response to you. One thing worth remembering is that this is not some anonymous message board out in the middle of cyberspace. This is a message board sponsored by TCM and we are invited guests. Do you guys insult the hosts when you visit their homes? Because that's what you are basically doing here with unsubstantiated "impressions" and flaming Ben M. For the record, Ben M is doing his part while Robert O is on hiatus. He is stepping up, covering many of Robert O's tour dates of music events and film screenings in addition to hosting each day of *SUTS*. He is, in that regard, the temporary face of TCM while Robert O is away. The men and women who work with Ben M have high regard for him and his work ethic. Anyone who has met him or seen him at the Film Festivals knows that he is gracious, funny and a hard worker. Posters often ask why the staff of TCM doesn't interact more with this community. This thread (and others) could be Exhibit 1 why they don't. My husband often likes to say that life doesn't really get past high school. Welcome to the TCM version of high school where it's okay to trash talk a hard working member of the TCM staff and then say, "just joking". It doesn't make it funny and it doesn't make it right. We are invited guests here and as long as we are all willing to trash talk the staff of TCM (even under the guise of "joking"), the more we make it unlikely that they will ever participate in these message boards past what they do now.
  20. > Okay. Thanks for the info...sounds like he has a busy itinerary! As noted in another thread (perhaps), Ben is also on the road acting as host of the various Philharmonic "Movies and Music" dates that Robert O does each summer but due to his hiatus, is now unable to do. Ben M graciously stepped up and from the sounds of things, is doing a good job.
  21. > Versions of THE THREE MUSKETEERS on the 14th. That looks very good. Not just the usual suspects when it comes to the Musketeers but the wonderful 1974 version directed by Richard Lester with an all-star cast is included! Thanks, TCM!!!! It's my favorite non-silent Musketeer movie!
  22. MsG, Thank you for the kind words. Here's a link to a thread I did on Dwan from a few years back: http://forums.tcm.com/thread.jspa?messageID=8250824 I think it has the answers you are looking for. If not, let me know!
  23. > Doesn't it usually play on TCM July 30 or 31st. I dont even see "Now Playing on TCM.com. I wanna know who the SOTM is and who the guest programmer will be and what will be playing on the essentials in August. MS, August is the annual *Summer Under the Stars* on-air festival where every day a different star is highlighted for 24 hours. Since that is the case, there is no SOTM nor Guest Programmer. There may not be a *Now Showing* for August due to Robert O's hiatus. Ben M will be guest hosting each evening during August as well as the weekends. We think they will return to the guest host format in September but there has been no confirmation from TCM about that. Robert O is scheduled to return to TCM in October.
  24. Kyle posted about it in another thread about a week ago before it was so interactive. What a great, big mid-century modern Valentine to all things *SUTS*! (and many here know how much I love all things MCM). This may be my favorite *SUTS* microsite ever. http://www.tcm.com/summer/index.html Edited by: lzcutter for punctuation
