  1. Roy,

I totally agree about Nicol Williamson and *Seven Per-Cent Solution*. Another fave of mine is his Little John in *Robin and Marian*. I totally believe his friendship with Sean Connery and jealousy that both he and Marian (Audrey Hepburn) feel towards one another because of Connery.

And a great score by John Barry.

  2. > But if it's a right issue, would anyone know why the same films sometimes get blocked while at other times are broadcast? Caught, as I stated, was blocked this week after being shown in Canada just a few months ago

It depends upon the terms of the rental/lease contracts. The terms can vary from one distributor to another.

    Some examples:

Short rental/lease contract of only a couple of months

    x number of screenings/airings

    Long-term (multi-month or year) rental/lease contract

We've seen example of all of the above on TCM.

  3. It's an old message from 2005 from TCMProgrammr in a thread about this very issue but he has also acknowledged the Canadian rights issues problems at both TCM Film Festivals recently during the *Meet the Staff* panel discussions:

"Yes, there are a few substitute films being scheduled in Canada. On some films (currently about 10% of the schedule) we don't have Canadian rights - rather than just black-out the programming for that block of time we are putting in replacement programming. We expect that 10% to eventually come down to below 5%."

He's also acknowledged that sometimes trying to find the legal Canadian rights holder is difficult to next impossible for some films. They must still be working on getting the percentage lower.

  4. > Did they actually program something special related to the festival in 2010 or 2011 during the festival itself?

    Calvin,

Yes, they did. There was a salute to Bernard Herrman as part of the 2011 Festival and during the Festival, TCM aired a series of movies featuring scores by Herrman (including *The Snows of Kilimanjaro*, *On Dangerous Ground* and *The Magnificent Ambersons* ) on the opening night of the Festival.

The Festival also had a salute to the Gershwins and during the Festival, TCM aired a series of films that had Gershwin songs in them.

*An American in Paris* was the opening film of last year's Festival and the channel aired the film as part of TCM's salute of the Festival.

They honored Peter O'Toole though I don't remember if they aired any of his films over that weekend but it wouldn't surprise me if they did.

I think they did similar Festival/broadcast salutes for the first Film Festival in 2010.

  5. > However, no other Titanic movie or movie that mentions the Titanic - such as Cavalcade - could I find scheduled for that night. It makes me very curious about the rest of the evening.

    Calvin,

It's during the Film Festival in Hollywood so it's possible that the other films that night may have some sort of Festival tie-in.

  6. > What we don't know is whether Osborne has final say as to the copy he reads. The possibility exists that the writers and other support staff don't have final say, and that Osborne brooks no disagreement with his own memory and judgment. If this is so, then it's disgraceful, and so counter-productive, since Osborne would be the one sabotaging his own reputation.

Having had the opportunity to watch Robert O on the set in Atlanta and at some of the tapings at the Film Festivals, I've never seen him act in such an imperious way. He has a great rapport with the men and women on his crew and they work well together. He doesn't act in the manner described above at least from what I've seen.

As to why he doesn't catch the misinformation in the scripts, given his age it is likely difficult to remember all the time the film history one keeps stored in their memory. I'm only in my 50s and have a hard time remembering facts or film titles from time to time.

  7. > Both of your comments made no sense since CRT televions are no longer made and everything is 16x9 HDTV flat screens

Sorry for the confusion, kreiger. I meant that if willbefree considers television to be filled with garbage why not just disconnect from the television all together.

She's written that she got rid of all her VHS tapes and DVDs so I surmised that she doesn't need the television for watching those.

She could use her computer for watching via Netflix, itunes or Amazon, those movies she wanted to see or the old television series that she used to enjoy before all the garbage came to television.

    Or read books.

  8. > And I fully expect to get "egged" by a friend for my gentle digs at the House The Mouse Built.

    Hey Chief,

Good news, no egging from me! I thought your post was very thoughtful and on point as usual (and I'm very happy to see you back here). As I understand it, Walt's relatives no longer profit from the mouse but the studio does.

  9. Mighty Mo,

At first glance, I thought the two kids were some of the Glo-los!

Thanks to you and everyone for the lovely birthday wishes.

    I truly appreciate it!

I'm off to see Angie Dickinson later tonight.

I'll be back with a report!

  10. > Why don't they suspend 75% of the people for being foul mouthed jerks? My previous account was disabled with zero reason given as well. I am very upset because all my contacts are broken. Worse all my very rare Colleen Moore and Clara Bow clips, Marion Davies, Betty Bronson, clips etc, can no longer be viewed.

    Jeffrey,

They likely suspended your account because you had uploaded clips that you don't own the copyright to. YouTube's policy states that a person should only upload content that they own the rights to or have permission of the copyright holder (s) to upload..

If you don't own the rights or have permission of the rights holder, the copyright holder has the right to contact YouTube and have the content taken down.

I know from your posts here as well as the SSO and at Nitrateville your feelings on the matter but as numerous posters at Nitrateville have tried to explain, the copyright holder is the legit owner of the material and has the right to have content they didn't authorize taken down.

I hope that the latest debacle over the SOPA/PIPA bill and the talks that will likely come out of it, helps the studios to realize that they should take a more active role in bringing their classic movie fare to an appreciative on-line audience.

There's no reason they can't follow the example of the AFI and the Academy and have their own Classic channels on YouTube where they offer clips and movies from their vaults. It certainly beats having to hire a squad of people to troll YouTube and other carriers looking for copyright offenders.

  11. > Apples and oranges-- they both have so much to offer and are both so different. Gene's great for athleticism and pure masculinity, but Fred is great for that suave and smooth dancing. Although both can really hoof. Yeah, I couldn't make that decision.

    Lonesome,

I agree! I don't understand the need to choose one over the other. They were two very different dancers. Shouldn't we appreciate them and their talent for the wonderful films they left for us to enjoy instead of making a choice of which one is better?

  12. > ...How I can present a quote in my post replies? Other forums I belong to have an app I can click on for this that's pretty much foolproof.

I use the Plain Text feature in the reply window. You place a > at the beginning of the sentence, then a space and then paste in the part of post you wish to quote. Be sure to leave some space between the end of the quote and your reply, (two lines at least). Otherwise, it will all appear in a white box for some bizarre reason.

    > ...Why the most recent post to a thread is at the top of page one instead of the bottom of, say, page five?

You can go into your Control Panel, just to the right of your Inbox and once there you can change your settings so that you can read threads in either a ascending or descending manner.

You can also change the settings for the number of threads per page and make them either ascending or descending.

    Hope that helps!

  14. > I believe that any web search engine would be able to find the URLs associated with particular files It may be from crawling the "MegaUpload" site and generating the links in that manner or from crawling any other website where that URL and an accompanying description may be posted. So while the site may not direct a person to a particular file uploaded to the site, any public search engine probaly could.

    And does.

As an example. I love the series *Justified* but I came to the series late, in the beginning of season 2. There are options for me to be able to see the first season.

    1) I can buy the DVD set.

    2) I can rent the first season from Netflix.

    3) I can watching via streaming from Amazon for a fee.

But, if I don't want to pay for an episode or an entire 12 episodes of the season, I can use Google and find bit torrent sites that would allow me to watch the season for free. And not just *Justified* but HBO, Showtime, Starz and even network shows.

And while it might be tempting, it is illegal not to mention wrong. 20th Century Fox and the creative team behind the show and those in front of the camera deserve to get paid for my enjoyment of the season I missed.

I want Fox to continue to make *Justified* and other channels to make shows that I enjoy watching.

Watching illegally only hurts all of us in the long run.

Should the studios and the networks do more to make their content available? You bet. I also love to watch *Person of Interest* but for some reason, CBS doesn't make it available via On Demand (like some of their other shows) which to me is just stupid. Wouldn't they whether have people watching their shows legally than not? You would think so.

Should the studios do a better job of policing illegal sites or even Youtube for their copyrighted material? Of course they should. They're cheaping out by forcing sites like Youtube to do the policing for them.

But there is a difference between sites like Youtube and Vimeo and bit torrent sites that exist for the sole purpose of trafficking / pirating television series or modern movies that they don't own or have the rights to. They also allow people to share the illegally obtained episodes and movies with others.

But whether its Youtube or a bit torrent site, they all have ads. They make money off the ads they run and the content creators get jack.

As a creative content creator, I'm with James on this one. I spend a lot of time on the material I create not only in my job but in my personal life as well and I don't want someone else stealing it and passing it off as their own without any acknowledgment or compensation.

Stealing someone's creative content whether its me or James or a mega corporation like Fox, Universal or any of the other studios is not only wrong but illegal.

  15. Jacks,

I hope you and Ben dived into that cake and didn't wait on me!!!

Thank you to all for the lovely birthday wishes!

I'm still celebrating. This Saturday I'm off to see Angie Dickinson at the Castro Theater and she's introducing *Point Blank* (ah, Lee in one of my favorite films) and *The Killers*.

  16. Roy,

I'm with you on Wild Bill. I've been a big fan of his for more years than I can count. I saw *The Ox-Bow Incident* on the late show when I was much, much younger and have been on Team Wellman ever since.

I still say he, Michael Curtiz and Raoul Walsh got a raw deal from the auteur theory lovers back in the 1960s. They were very talented directors that deserve more credit than they are usually given.
