  1. > We love him and many many of us are concerned for him during this absence, is he okay? Judah, Not to worry! TCM announced last week that Robert O is taking a short hiatus. He had minor surgery and is doing fine. After his recuperation, he will be going on vacation. He is scheduled to return to TCM in October. In the interim, friends of Robert O's and of TCM will be acting as guest hosts. Last week it was RJ Wagner, this week it is Jane Powell, next week, Tippi Hedren will be guest hosting. Others will be added as the summer progresses. Segments for *Arab Images in Film* that Robert O prerecorded before his hiatus will continue to air on Tuesdays and Thursdays this month as well as Saturday's screenings of *The Essentials* that Robert O co-hosts with Alec Baldwin (though *The Essentials* takes August off so TCM can celebrate the annual *Summer Under the Stars* festival). More info on the announcement can be found here: http://forums.tcm.com/thread.jspa?threadID=160702&tstart=25
  2. > There are so many strong opinions here. Many of them I agree with but some I don't. filmgoddess, The *Race and Hollywood* series usually engenders strong reactions from posters and this year is no different. > Should I post? Depends on you, really. If you don't feel comfortable responding to other posts in this thread, there are plenty of topics not only in this forum, General Discussions, but also all the other forums. >I've heard from friends that there are many rules, a few people who run things, and people trying to get others kicked off the boards all the time. This is a moderated board and there is a Code of Conduct that the Mods (moniker - TCMWebAdmin) enforce. The community here is pretty democratic. The majority of posters are here because of their love of classic films and enjoy talking about films. > Do most people here consider this a welcoming place? The majority of folks here probably do, otherwise, they wouldn't stay and some have been here since the early days of these message boards over ten years ago. It is an internet community and care should be taken when composing a post as it is different from having a face-to-face conversation with someone. The thing that seems to work well is to remember that even though there may be films or stars that you may not like, there are posters here who do. So, a little care in how one phrases their dislikes tends to go a long way. If you've been lurking here for over a year, you've got a pretty good idea of what works here and what tends to ruffle others' feathers. FredC is right, sometimes, posters can talk a great deal like Cagney, Robinson and Bogart, but at the end of the day, they usually reveal themselves to be not only human but pretty friendly as well. Welcome aboard and good luck.
  3. > Don't miss SON OF THE SHEIK this Thursday I'm looking forward to it. David Shepard, one of the renowned film preservationists, says it will have a new score and I hear it's really good!
  4. > Although I thought Gulager was hot in THE LAST PICTURE SHOW.... Barb, I hear ya on that one! I loved him on *The Virginian* when I was younger. Watching the episodes today, he's the method actor among a group of natural actors. Often it works, but when it doesn't, OY!
  5. Clore, Andrew Prine was quite the tv star in the 1960s. If he wasn't guest starring on westerns around the dial, he was co-starring in *The Road West* with Barry Sullivan. You are absolutely correct about him and aging. He has great genes.
  6. > I believe in this day it may be best to ask Neal Caffrey to help. I am sure he and Mozzie could steal it off and have the people thank them besides. I don't want to hijack this thread but I love Sansfin's idea of Neal and Mozzie stealing Robby. If anyone could, it would be those two! But Peter Burke would be on their trail in a New York minute.
  7. Slayton, Which search box are you using? The one on the main forum page or the one in the right had corner at the top of the page along the banner? I just did a search for *The Searchers* using the search box in the right hand corner at the top of frame and the default is set to TCMDb and it took me to the listing for movies with that title and from there I clicked on the first one (the John Wayne movie) and it took me to the TCMDb page for that film.
  8. > Robert Osbourne is on "vacation" (i hope) and Robert Wagner is standing in as a "temporary guest" host (i hope). Stephan, There was an announcement last week from TCM that Robert O is taking a break until October. He had minor surgery, is doing fine and after his recuperation, he will take a vacation. In the meantime, friends of Robert O and of TCM, including Tippi Hedren and Jane Powell, will be acting as weekly guest hosts until Robert O's return in Oct. Here's a thread about it: http://forums.tcm.com/thread.jspa?threadID=160702&tstart=0
  9. Chris, I'm with you- growing up with TV westerns. My dad took us to see *Magnificent Seven* in the theater (it was on the lower half of a double bill-don't remember what film was at the top of the bill) but I remember watching *Gunsmoke* when it in black and white and on Saturday nights at 10:00. My mom loved *The Virginian*, *Maverick*, *Rawhide* and *Cheyenne*. I was a big fan of *The Rifleman*, *Have Gun, Will Travel*, *Lancer* and, of course, *The High Chapparel*, as well.
  10. Roy, I'm like you. Saw a bunch of me when I was a young whippersnapper. My dad loved westerns. My earliest recollection would be *The Magnificent Seven* when I was about six or seven. Dale
  11. > Do we complain about Clifton Webb's portrayal in LAURA, saying it supports the notion that gay or effeminate men are all crazy and perverse? Just as there are positive and unflattering portrayals of gays and lesbians, or blacks and hispanics, so too will there be positive and negative representations of Arabs. Which is one of the points of the *Race and Hollywood* series. Each year, this series looks at the stereotypical film images of minorities and how those images have changed over the years. Thanks to this series we have seen the evolution of African-American, Gays, Asians, Latins and Native Americans images in American film from stereotypical to heroic.
  12. > Any chance Subject will be played again? Solarblast, It is scheduled for airing on Saturday, October 1st at 12:00 pm (EST).
  13. TCM likely discovered at the last minute that there were rights issues surrounding the cartoon and had to pull it from the schedule. As crazy as it sounds, it does happen.
  14. > But would you really want a pair of shoes or glasses that could be anyone's? No. This is a fantasy thread asking what five pieces of movie memorabilia would I like to own. In that regard, I would like to own the glasses Atticus Finch wore in *Mockingbird* and the moccasin boots Natalie Wood wore in *The Searchers* not glasses or shoes that anyone could have worn. All of the items on my list are not available for me to own but that doesn't stop me from dreaming or fantasizing. Like you, I own a Maltese Falcon (mine came from the old Scene of the Crime bookstore in Hollywood and survived the Northridge earthquake just losing a small portion of a tail feather) reproduction. But, as this is a fantasy thread, a girl (or anyone) can dream about owning the real McCoys.
  15. >1- John Wayne's Winchester from "Stagecoach" >2- Rosebud, the sleigh from "Citizen Kane" >3- John Wayne's Belt buckle from "Red River" >4- M16 Attache case from "From Russia With Love" >5- John Wayne's braclet from "Red River" Roy, I love your list! Here's mine: 1- John Wayne's uniform jacket from *She Wore a Yellow Ribbon* 2- Natalie Wood's moccasin boots from *The Searchers* 3- Gregory Peck's glasses from *To Kill a Mockingbird* 4- Lee Marvin's whip from *The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance* 5- Ian McKellan's walking stick from *Fellowship of the Ring* dale
  16. > Is it official RO isnt doing them? Wouldnt he have taped them far in advance? Hibi, From the TCM announcement, it certainly sounds like, aside from the already filmed *Race and Hollywood* segments, *The Essentials* and the upcoming Guest Programmers, guest hosts will be pinch hitting for Robert O from now until his return in October. While Robert O does film his monthly wraparounds in advance, with the TCM Film Festival and such in the Spring, perhaps they weren't able to do as much advance taping as they usually do before he took his hiatus.
  17. Floyd, Up until today, using the latest version of Firefox, it would get hung up after logging in and you would have to reload the message boards and log in again for it to take. (I'm not upgrading to the next version of Firefox anytime soon). Both smileys and I noted this phenom in the Upgrade thread a few weeks ago. But since this morning, it has been working on the first try.
  18. It's likely a typo. They've been advertising *The Misfits* and all the clips and the trailer have been in black and white. My money is on them running the film in black and white and then move into the rest of the evening featuring Clark Gable in color. But, that's just an educated guess on my part.
  19. > It's possible, like someone said, he may return in a reduced capacity........ Anything is possible but for now, TCM is saying Robert O will return to his full time hosting duties in October. We will have to wait and see what happens or if, a month or two from now, TCM revises their statement. Till then (either way), we have no reason not to expect Robert O back at the helm.
  20. > Despite this simplicity, Izcutter cannot seem to get this type of printout in order to see whether the font sizes for July are smaller than the font sizes for June!! I do not understand his inability to make this determination. As I answered in the other thread this evening, using Firefox, I don't have any difference in font size between the two month's schedule and the font size is quite legible for my mid-century modern eyes.
  21. Jeremy, The font sizes are not a problem for me. The June schedule font size and the July font size are the same size and both are very legible even for my mid-century modern eyes. Sorry.
  22. It's amazing to me that your images keep getting censored by the WebAdmin despite the fact that they are ads created by the studios to publicize the very movies, in this case, mentioned in the ad and in the previous case of *Footlight Parade*, the very one sheet used not only to publicize the film but used on the DVD cover art (that can be found on this very website). Makes me shake my head.
  23. There is a terrific book on the history of Technicolor called, appropriately enough, Glorious Technicolor.
  24. The City of Angels still does, though considerably fewer than there were when I first got here almost thirty five years ago. But we still have the New Beverly Cinema, the Nuart, the American Cinemateque at the Egyptian in Hollywood and the Aero in Santa Monica and the Warner's down in San Pedro. Up in the City by the Bay, they have the Castro and the Roxie.
  25. > Great minds.... Helen, And slow wireless connections (at least on my end), gotta love 'em!
