  1. > This is a thread for the movie "THE SEARCHERS". Dorothy is not in it.

    FredC,

My guess is that Mongo's fingers slipped as he was adding a New Year's image to his *Candids* thread and accidentally posted the image in this thread.

  2. Hey all you buckaroos!

Roy Rogers is being feted by the Rose Parade this Monday. Dusty Rogers (Roy, Jr) and his band, Trigger, Bullet and some of Roy's grandchildren will all be on a western themed float honoring Roy's centennial.

So, get up early and catch the Rose Parade on Monday, Jan. 2nd. (No parade or Rose Bowl game on Jan. 1st this year because it is a Sunday and the charter for the Rose Committee specifies that no parade or game is held on the day of the Lord).

To tide you over till Monday:

  3. > Robertson didn't make the cutoff for getting the montage? A gross injustice.

There was no injustice, gross or otherwise. Cliff Robertson is in the 2011 TCM Remembers In Memoriam.

The poster was talking about the stand alone tribute that some stars get (the slow orchestral music, windshield wiper, rain) when they pass away.

She was saying while Robertson got a Tribute day, she did not see the Memorial tribute to him alone.

  4. > From the comments posted here it is apparent that this problem is originating from TCM itself

If the problem were coming from TCM then all of us would be experiencing the same problems when watching TCM regardless of cable or satellite provider.

    But we aren't.

So, it is likely (as has been mentioned more than once previously in this thread) that the problem is with your cable provider. Cable providers are notorious for trying to lay the blame on others to try and get out of actually doing the job you are paying them for.

  5. > So, my suggestion would be for TCM to hold off on an In Memorial to early to mid January and then play the spot for a couple of months.

Wasn't there a thread about this last year?

It's traditional at this time of the year to look back on the year that is waning and remember those who passed. TCM is not the only one that does this. Magazines, newspapers, news broadcasts, etc are all providing remembrances of those left us in 2011.

It is part of our culture that we use the month of December to look back. If TCM were to hold off and run the In Memoriam tribute throughout January, how many people would question the timing and complain that it is better suited to December? Probably more than we think.

Another poster mentioned the Academy's In Memoriam being in February but that is because it is part of the Academy Awards and not a separate, stand-alone tribute. It airs only once during the Academy Awards broadcast.

  6. > Robert Osbourne's commentary about Mr. Powell did not appear until well into the 2nd week of December

Robert O returned to TCM on Dec. 1st and his nightly commentary has aired each night since. The first night of William Powell's turn as SOTM (Dec. 1st), TCM aired *Jewel Robbery* and *The Kennel Murder Case* and Robert O was front and center on the commentary and has been ever since.

  7. > Is there a difference between "has the rights" and "has the EXCLUSIVE BROADCAST rights"?

Yes, as FredC has noted, there are different broadcast rights. Some like for a *Wonderful Life* (NBC), *The Ten Commandments* (ABC), *The Godfather* (AMC) are long-term, multi-year exclusive contracts to those networks.

Some films that are leased to the Encore Channel show up not only on their various channels but Multiplex and the Retroplex channel as well (there seems to be some sort of corporate ownership/partnership between Encore and the Plex channels) so they are not exclusive to just one channel but likely exclusive to the corporate owner to air on the various, dictated channels for a period of time (several weeks to several months or sometimes, x number of screenings.

Various films leased to HBO will air on various HBO-owned channels. Showtime also does this.

TCM does have some films on long-term lease but we have no way of knowing the finer details of those contracts. Usually a film that runs on TCM does not air on another national network or cable channel at the time it is running on TCM. There may be some exceptions to that , I don't knoiw for sure.

Based on what I have seen, some of the films they have leased from Fox come with a deliberate, short-term contract such as *A Tree Grows in Brooklyn* and the first screenings of *All About Eve*.

A few years ago, TCM was able to gain the rights, very short term, for *White Christmas* (I think it aired once or twice only) and then the rights reverted back to AMC.

For many years, AMC had the early Universal horror movies under contract and they were the only channel that could air them at Halloween.

So, it's all about the details in the contracts and most channels do get some sort of exclusivity out of the deal, either short term or long term.

But, as always, your mileage may vary and this is not to be taken as exact science.

  8. *To Kill a Mockingbird*

Horton Foote distilled the wonderful story by Harper Lee down to a two hour storyline that movie goers could not only like but one they could identify with.

That it mirrored a tumultuous time in the Civil Rights era only made the story it told more heart felt and more personal.

"Jean Louise. Jean Louise, stand up. Your father's passing."

'If you just learn a single trick, Scout, you'll get along a lot better with all kinds of folks. You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view... Until you climb inside of his skin and walk around in it."

    "Hey Boo"

"Miss Jean Louise, Mr. Arthur Radley. I believe he already knows you."

  9. Merry Christmas to the wonderful TCM staff, without whom, there would be no channel. They work hard to bring us the goods and while complaints tend to run rampant from time to time, it's nice to take a moment to appreciate all the hard work they do so that we can enjoy the movies and the original productions.

So, Merry Christmas to Robert O (it is so wonderful to have you back), Ben M, Alec B, Tom Brown, Charlie, Genevieve, Scott, Pola, Sean, Heather and everyone else from the front office to behind the camera to those who work the Film Festival and the Cruise, a bajillion thanks for all you do and may your holidays be bright with joy and happiness!

  10. It may have less to do with how she feels about her looks these days and more to do with the fact that she doesn't enjoy talking about her life as a Hollywood star.

She has a nice quiet life in Carmel that by most accounts doesn't revolve around her former career.

Perhaps, that's just the way she prefers it.

  11. > Not only having an affair but BOLDLY talking about their affair. Not a good situation.

Hepburn didn't talk about the affair until much later in her life. She didn't talk about it while Tracy was alive and not for many years after his death.

I don't think she started talking publicly about it until after the late 1970s when Garson Kanin published his book, Tracy and Hepburn. Up till then, the majority of Americans didn't know about the affair.

Hepburn was very aware of Mrs. Tracy and she was always aware of Louise Tracy's feelings and her status as Tracy's wife and tried not say anything or do anything that would embarrass Louise Tracy.

She and Louise Tracy took shifts caring for Tracy in his final days.
