Where are the Bette Davises & Spencer Tracys today?
lzcutter replied to TopBilled's topic in General Discussions
> I have a feeling Hedda would not agree. If you are going to play the Hedda card, it's worth remembering that she helped run Charlie Chaplin out of the country in the 1950s. I would hardly hold her up as a paragon of anything, especially as an arbiter of talent. -
Where are the Bette Davises & Spencer Tracys today?
lzcutter replied to TopBilled's topic in General Discussions
>Agree...or disagree...? I do not see any Spencer Tracys here, do you? Why do they have to be compared to classic era film stars in order to be considered talented? Many on that list- Brolin, Cheadle, Damon, Pitt, Barden, Gyllenhall, etc- are extremely talented and have given us a wide range of characters in their careers thus showing in us in a wide range of films how talented they are. So, you can't compare any of them to Spencer Tracy? That somehow makes them less talented? Why not appreciate them for what they bring to the screen in role after role instead of trying to compare them to actors of another era? -
BASIC QUESTION; WHY DO YOU LIKE OLD MOVIES/
lzcutter replied to misswonderly3's topic in General Discussions
I got interested in classic film back in the days when they weren't that old and they were regular staples on television- The Big Movie, the Afternoon Movie, Monday, Tuesday, etc Night at the Movies, the weekend movies, the late night movies, etc. The auteur theory had brought some of the classic film directors back into the spotlight, *Gone With the Wind* celebrated a milestone anniversary and was brought back to theaters. By the time I was in high school, there was a renaissance of classic films in popular culture. Suddenly Bogart, the Marx Brothers, Cagney and more were rediscovered and celebrated. Classic film stars were on television in quality drama shows and on the various day time talk shows like Mike Douglas and Merv Griffin and, of course, they all seem to have sat down with Johnny Carson. Then the MGM Grand Hotel (the first one) opened in 1973 with a movie theater as part of the hotel/casino, one that ran MGM studio prints of classic films with a bill that changed every week. By that time, I was already a confirmed dyed in the wool film buff. When I got to the City of Angels, there were still Revival Theaters all around the city. From the Vagabond, to the Rialto, to the New Beverly to the Venice to the Nuart, they were all running classic films with adventurous double bills. Which, I guess, is a long-winded way of saying I've been a film buff for more years than I can remember. Why? The captured my imagination during a time when you had to either stay up late or fake being sick and stay home in order to watch a film you were dying to see. There were no VCRs, no cable, no DVRs, no TCM. But, it was all worth it because the stories they told, the way they were shot ( I was the only teenager I knew who knew who James Wong Howe was), directed and acted. I love movies, not only classic era films but modern films. I look good stories well-told and I like grade z sci-fi films. I love movies. Always have, always will. -
BRONXGIRL'S MOTHER, HENRY FONDA'S HIRSUTENESS, ETC.

>Can you imagine being a fly on the wall with that cast? Jacks, Don't I wish! Get thee to Netflix so you can enjoy this film! -
I prefer *The Major and the Minor* over the similar but dramatic *The Constant Nymph* but a lot of that has to do with the fact I don't like Charles Boyer's character in *Nymph*.

Jacks, Even Leo is good in it in a dual role but it is the men who surround him that steal the movie. They have great chemistry together and are a joy to watch. -

>I dare you not to be spellbound. He's PERFECT. A rough and tumble street kid from Dublin who longs for the stars and can recite poetry. SIGH Jacks, He is absolutely hearbreaking in the *Man in the Iron Mask* with an all-star cast that includes John Malkevich, Gerard Depardu and Jeremy Irons as well as a young Leo. -

OK, Who HiJacked the Printable Schedules??

> It seems to me that TCM would rather that the message boards just disappear, since they are causing one big, extended headache. Apart from the crazy conspiracy theories and such as of late, these message boards, its posters and TCM have weathered worse. "It was the best of times, it was the worst of times." I think that's the unofficial motto of TCM City and all who post here over a long period of time! :x -

OK, Who HiJacked the Printable Schedules??

> They did NOT return the 3 full-month schedule function. THEY DID NOT DO THAT. They added a tedius day by day by day search function which is much too slow to use. Fred, My apologies. I use the weekly schedule and did not realize that the month tab was not there on the schedule page. I understand your frustration and everyone else's. I just don't buy into the number of conspiracy theories that have been posted throughout the forums today. My point remains that since the glitches to the other functions that occurred last Thursday are being fixed as we speak, I believe the 'secret' link URLs will return as well. Call me crazy. -

> Why do you answer for Kyle? We posted at the same time. When I saw that had happened, I revised my post. As for the three month schedule, they did return to the schedule page but not to the schedule pull down menu on the banner. And then last Thursday, glitches occurred that took out a few other functions and the links were broken to the 'secret' printable schedules. *But* the glitches to the other functions are being repaired and it is logical to think (at least to me) that the 'secret' links will be restored as well. Whether they return to the schedule pull down menu on the banner and be printable from there is a different problem. -

> Then someone found some "secret" links to future months, which we used since March. Then those links were disabled last thursday or friday, with an automatic link-back to the current month page. Those links were disabled last Thursday or Friday at the same time other glitches occurred like the loss of the Reply and Edit words, posting history, quote function and that if you clicked on the big words Message Boards at the top of the page (with the date to the right) from inside any forum page it took you to the TCM Home page. Since Friday, the majority of those glitches have been fixed and there is no reason to think that the quote function and the "secret" links to July, August and Sept. won't return. -

>Kyle, have you forgotten the previous "upgrade" already? It was in Jan-Mar. or somewhere back then, and that's when the 3-month schedule list disappeared from the TCM schedule page. FredC, Just to clarify, the upgrade didn't occur in January or February. The upgrade occurred the week of March 7th. If you search the archives using the word upgrade, it will bear this out. -
> Actually, I have the September schedule saved on my PC and it is complete. It was saved on June 15 at 9:04AM And the next day, there were some glitches that occurred that messed up the schedule URLs, the loss of the Reply and Edit words, posting history and the if you clicked on the big words Message Boards from inside any forum it should have taken you to the main page of the Forums. Instead it took you to the main TCM home page. 95% of those problems have been resolved (and the preview function has returned) so it seems more than likely the schedule URLs will get fixed and those will reappear.

OK, Who HiJacked the Printable Schedules??
lzcutter replied to lydecker's topic in General Discussions
I guess it bears repeating. When Classicstarlet posted the link to the September schedule, the schedule was still being worked on. There were blank days with no films listed. A few posters even commented on it. It very well could be that once the schedule is finalized the URL will be reinstated. It's why long time posters urge patience in threads like this because as has been frequently pointed out by many, many posters, the 60-90 day schedule is not a right nor something we are entitled. No other channel (network or cable) gives their customers access to a schedule 60-90 days out. But, TCM does and shares it first with those who post here. The July and August links broke late last week when there was some sort work done on the website. There is no reason to think those links won't be restored. -
As noted earlier in this thread, the schedule wasn't completed when the OP posted the link. It was a work in progress with certain days left empty. TopBilled noticed this and even posted about the blank days. It is conceivable that TCM took the link down until the schedule is completed. Once the schedule is finalized, it may very well return.

I think the latest schedule snafu happened at the same time a couple of fixes/changes were deployed late last week. TCM seems to be taking our complaints seriously as many of the problems that the deployment caused have been fixed. Hopefully, the monthly schedule urls will be fixed as well. I doubt it is TCM thumbing their nose at us or having little regard for their fan base or many of the other things I have read over the last few days in various forums. Not all companies have an in-staff web team, especially given this economy. Many companies out-source their web site, the design, the upgrades, everything we have seen the last few months. TCM may have some people on staff who can upload content but the upgrade and the problems we are seeing may be done by an out-sourced Web company that is on a contract basis, perhaps shared by other Turner channels. The on-site TCM staff may not have the tools to fix the problems on the spot but have to rely on the contract company which would explain why it takes a few days for glitches to be fixed. Should the contract company be more efficient? Yes, they should. I doubt we are the only ones who think so but if they are working on a contract basis (as well as with other Turner channels), TCM may be bound legally to use them until the contract expires. Which may explain why we are seeing some of the problems and some of the delays in getting them fixed as quickly as we feel they are warranted.

Val, For what it's worth, I wouldn't take that bet and you know by now, I'm the wagering type. But, that would be a sucker bet. You're not alone.

> By the way, I am thinking of creating a thread a few days down the road about politics in Hollywood. It will not be a thread about who was Democrat or who was Republican, but it will be about political events and petitions/drives that actors became involved with away from the studios.. Let me check the Magic 8 ball, oh wait, I see another thread that gets into a long discussion/debate/argument about the Hollywood 10 and the Blacklist, that goes on and on for pages, doesn't change anyone's mind and ultimately gets locked by the WebAdmin because the discussion/debate/argument turns personal, snarky and /or mean. Or, another long discussion/debate/argument on Jane Fonda. The long thread that got started in the summer of 2007 almost caused a meltdown here of historic proportion and all because she was sitting down with Robert O. for a *Private Screenings*. The topic has been revived a few times since then and always ends up locked by the WebAdmin because it ends up so inflammatory. Previous threads on the subject that weren't deleted by the various Web Admins can be found in the archives. Good luck with your thread.

FYI if they were produced before 1949 (and not silents) they are part of Universal's film library and not Paramount's. *Heller in Pink Tights* was on TCM about eight months or so ago.

> Every movie start time in this schedule (I assume that it is also there in the schedules for the following months that have been posted somewhere in these forums, without an official blessing) which begins with a "9" is erroneous, with regard to the AM or PM! Whenever it is supposed to read "AM", it reads "PM", and vice-versa. It is strange that no one here has reported this multiplicity of erroneous start times yet. Jeremy, Not sure what schedule you are referring to. That problem did exist after the upgrade but people did mention it and the problem was fixed. I just checked the daily, weekly and full monthly schedule from the pull-down menu on the top banner and the am/pm problem you cite is not there. Perhaps you are working from older copies?

Marilyn Monroe's dress from *Seven Year Itch* sold for 4.6 (plus a mil to the auction company for a total of 5.6 mil), Her showgirl outfit from *Gentlemen Prefer Blondes* sold for 1.47, her outfits from *River of No Return* and *There's No Business Like Show Business* sold for combined 1.2 million.

Chief, What a great idea for a thread. Here's my contribution: 1. Hal Roach spotlight - I loved the *Our Gang* shorts. 2. Tarzan on Saturday mornings 3. Serials like *Buck Rogers* and now *Ace Drummond* on Saturday mornings 4. Jean Harlow promo (it reminded me of the old days before budgets were reduced and we had a SOTM promo every month). 5. The new open for Ben M on Saturdays and Sundays as well as some of the other promos like the current *Drive-In Movies*, honoring the *Civil War* and others.
