The day John Barrymore threw a child across the set
lzcutter replied to TopBilled's topic in General Discussions
Garson Kanin, like many in classic film, knew how to tell a good story and he wasn't beyond embellishing a story for dramatic effect. Once the story was told, others picked up on it and much like Charles Higham's gossip about Errol Flynn being a Nazi, it made its way into the larger subconsious where it is still repeated and recycled though, in the case of Flynn, it is not true and in this case, exaggerated for effect. -
>At least we can color our replies. The Preview function is back but it is now a tab at the top of the window. Every time I click on the big words Message Boards at the top of the page with the date to the right, it takes me to the TCM home page. What's with that? Also, the words Reply and Edit have disappeared on the posts. I always used those instead of the icons. I see we now have emoticons but I would prefer the words Reply and edit back as well as not being directed to the home page when I click on Message Boards. It used to take me to the main page page of the Forums. Having that back would be very helpful.

Looks like they added the Preview function back but instead of being at the bottom of the reply screen it is now a tab across the top. While the reply icon is still there, the word reply has disappeared. Does anyone have an Edit icon?

BRONXGIRL'S MOTHER, HENRY FONDA'S HIRSUTENESS, ETC.

Barb, I thought you and the other Rudy lovers might enjoy these link: http://www.altfg.com/blog/actors/rudolph-valentino-donna-hill/ -
I think it was first used in *Christine*, the thriller from the Stephen King novel of the same name.

*Why then won't these bright boys break out "Hot Spell" with Anthony Quinn & Shirley Booth which they have not aired in 10 years???* Didn't we (the community we) have this conversation earlier this year/last year when you were here posting under a variety of names about *Hot Spell* ? It's like deja-vu all over!

I think part of the problem for any museum or institute considering buying the collection is the sheer size and the fact that it is so diverse. It is not just costumes but camera equipment, cameras, lights, cars and much more. The costumes have to be stored in temperature controlled vaults and the cars require special storage as well. Given the size of the collection, the storage bills must be huge and I think that is probably the main reason Ms. Reynolds has decided to sell it, she can't afford to keep paying for the storage. It is likely the main stumbling block for anyone or any institute that would be interested in taking the collection. Most museums don't have the room to store all the collection so they would have to continue to pay the rental on the storage units and most museums don't have the floor space to display the collection without undertaking the design and building of a separate building just to display it. It's too bad that economy tanked just as the Academy was undertaking plans to build a museum in Hollywood. They have had to put those plans on hold.

It likely got pulled because it was a work in progress, noted by the days that had yet to be filled in. The OP found it before TCM was ready for it to be released. So, they have pulled it from the web until they are finished with the schedule. At least, that's what it looks like from here. The schedules this far out are a treat that TCM gives to the denizens of this message board. Hopefully, that will continue to be so. It's worth remembering that having the schedule this far out is not right but a gift.

*A Tree Grows in Brooklyn* was on TCM about two years ago. Some of the Chans and Mr. Motos have been broadcast a few times but the last time they appeared on the schedule with many titles was in the summer of 2008 and the *Race and Hollywood: Asian American Images on Film* series.

Y-e-s! THE STORY OF TEMPLE DRAKE on TCM in September
lzcutter replied to TopBilled's topic in General Discussions
>I do sometimes wonder why it took Hollywood and American society 35 years to accept the idea that they could set ratings on motion pictures and basically do away with the code. The various religions also played a big hand in keeping the code in place. Each state had its own Legion of Decency, even some cities did and the minister/reverend/preacher/etc told his congregation to stay away from the film, many did. Studios and producers knew that large boycotts of films by various religious groups or if a Legion of Decency decided not to bequeath their stamp of approval on a film, while it might garner publicity and some box office in the short run, but in the long run it was considered box office poison and not worth the headache. It wasn't until the the cultural shift in society away from the Legions of Decency, the church, etc that the code was able to be replaced by the modern version. -
THE CONSTANT NYMPH (1943) to air on TCM
lzcutter replied to TopBilled's topic in General Discussions
>Now, if TCM could only help clear up the rights issues surrounding LETTY LYNTON...then this would be a perfect TCM world! Casey LeLonde, Joan's grandson has said that he and others (presumably TCM) are working on clearing the rights issues surrounding *Letty Lynton*. But, these cases take time and, often, $$$. -
THE CONSTANT NYMPH (1943) to air on TCM
lzcutter replied to TopBilled's topic in General Discussions
>It's about time. finance, It's been tied up in right's issues for over sixty years. TCM was able to clear those issues just this year. *The Story of Temple Drake*, another film screening in September, also has had rights issues for years that kept it from being broadcast. *Night Flight* is another film also in rights issues he**. Fortunately, TCM was finally able to clear the issues up for all three films. Two are screening in September. *Night Flight* should follow in the months ahead. -
Ro, Dean looks like he could use a beer. Just beer, preferably cold!

Y-e-s! THE STORY OF TEMPLE DRAKE on TCM in September
lzcutter replied to TopBilled's topic in General Discussions
Cody, TCM projected *The Story of Temple Drake* last year at the Film Festival. For years, the film has been tied up in rights issues. For the last couple of years, TCM has been working on clearing those rights issues. Looks like they have finally succeeded. This year at the Festival, TCM showed *Night Flight* and *The Constant Nymph*, both of which have been on the shelf for years because of rights issues. Robert O announced at the Festival that TCM had cleared the rights issues on both films and both would be coming to TCM. Looks like *Constant Nymph* is up first! -
Floyd, Ted Turner hasn't owned TCM since he merged his media empire with Time Warner back in the mid-to-late 1990s. The majority of people who work at TCM have been there for an average of eight years or more. They take pride in the fact that the channel has remained true to its mission when it debuted seventeen years ago. The people who run the channel also appreciate what the channel accomplishes and the loyalty of its fan base. They won the Peabody Award a few years ago for being the one channel that is still following the mission it debuted with and those at TCM are very proud of that award.

>just tried to request the films...and I don't see a place to do that. Am I just overlooking it? Or did they do away with that feature? If so...why? It was such a nice feature. They took the *Suggest a Movie* site down when the upgrade occurred. It is our understanding that it is getting revamped and should return before the end of the month.

Rich, That was terrific! Please, daddy-o, may we have some more? Please, please, please! -
Any way you cut it, Ford Bebee was perhaps a better writer than director.

It is estimated that one-fifth of all the films shot in America were partially shot somewhere at the MGM studios. If you don't know about this book, you need to. If you love classic film, you will probably want to read this book. If you love film history, you will want this book on your bookshelf for reference. Okay, this book is now widely available from book stores and on-line. For a month or two, it was out of print at Amazon and priced that way. The good news is *that it is back in print* for Amazon and you can own this extraordinary book for $25. A history of the physical studio, the buildings, the departments and the famed backlots with hundreds of photos, many never before seen. There are maps and detailed history of the various departments that made up the most famous dream factory of the 20th century. This is not a history of the stars, the films or the front office but a history of the famed physical studio. If you don't own this book already, you need to check it out now either from your local bookstore or online before the price goes up. It is must reading for anyone who loves classic films.

Kyle In Hollywood's CENSORED Poster Gallery
lzcutter replied to hlywdkjk's topic in Remembering Kyle in Hollywood
Chief, It's amazing how much the two Dirk Bogard posters look so similar! Love the Ace Drummond poster! -
Val, I totally agree about *The Giant Claw*. It is practically unwatchable. The giant puppet is just too funny. One of my favorites in this vain is the *The Creeping Terror*, a giant roll of carpet terrorizing a small town. The dialog tracks were lost and the film relies on music cues and narration. It's one-of-a-kind.

Roy, I look forward to that day! In the meantime, if you haven't gotten a copy of the new book, MGM: Hollywood's Greatest Backlot, you need to order it or buy it NOW! It is a terrific look not only at the backlot of Hollywood's greatest dream factory but it also includes a history of the entire lot. There are hundreds of photos of the various departments on the lot, the workers, maps of the lot and the backlots and so much more! Anyone who loves movies and loves the history of Hollywood will enjoy this book! I just got my copy last night and I can't put it down!
