> I'm sorry they never did a sequel. Lots of good actors were in that film.
I agree. A film trilogy would have been great. They certainly had the talent for it.
I saw the film on opening day at the Egyptian Theater all those years ago. Still one of my favorites.

> Buckaroo Banzai, hands down...
Hey there, monkey boy!
In addition to Buckaroo, Perfect Tommy and Reno were pretty cool.
But, yeah, Buckaroo is damn cool.

Wouldbe,
I'm thrilled to see westerns making a comeback on television and this one looks very interesting.
My only complaint is Sunday night. My DVR is in overdrive thanks to all the great television just on Sunday nights alone. It takes most of a Saturday or Sunday just to get through all the shows I DVR on Sunday night.

> I'm willing to wait and see how this plays out but if I haven't heard from the organizers by Wednesday, well I may just alter my itinerary & spending plan for this year's Hollywood trip.
You might try using the Contact Us link at the Film Festival website. Posters who missed getting emails used that in the past to reach out to Festival staff for information.

The Contact link is at the bottom of the page.

> I and many other 2010 attendees got an advanced email (well before anyone at TCM made the announcement in social media or to the general public) for TCM 2011 letting us know when tickets would go on sale for alumni as well as discount pricing.
I didn't say that there was no advanced email or discounted pricing in the past.
All I said was that I don't remember there being a special period of time dedicated to alumni of past Film Festivals being able to purchase their passes at a discounted rate before the passes went on sale for everyone at the "TCM Fanatic/Early Bird" prices.
Sorry that you didn't receive the email. I do know in the past two years that there have been posters here who didn't receive the info at the same time as the majority of posters here did.
Maybe there was a glitch in the bulk emailing?
-
> Given that TCM has already posted when the passes will go on sale do you think they will let previous TCM fest. attendees and newsletter registers have privy to purchasing passes earlier? I heard they have done this before, true?
I don't think they've done that in the past. What they have done in the past is offer the passes at a slight discount for everyone until the middle of December. But it looks like they aren't offering that this year.

> Baldwin isn't being "replaced", is he?
No, he's been the co-host for three seasons, the longest run of any since they changed the format to a duo introducing the films.
Not everyone agrees with Alec as the choice for one season, let alone three, but Robert O obviously enjoyed the give and take of their discussions because Alec was asked to return for more seasons.
The move to another co-host isn't unusual and shouldn't be seen as Alec being replaced any more than a change of co-hosts from Molly Haskell to Carrie Fisher to Rose McGowan was. No one says they were replaced and neither was Baldwin.
It's time to do something different and TCM saw the opportunity to take Drew Barrymore up on her offer (that she made at this year's Film Festival) of wanting to co-host *The Essentials*.
It's that simple. Any other reading of the tea leaves that indicates that Baldwin is being replaced or that TCM read this thread and decided "OMG, a small percentage of our viewers hate Alec B, we have to replace him immediately" is just that, fanciful thinking.

> lz, wasn't the first event around noon time, in Club TCM? It was the presentation of the original slabs from Grauman's (Mary Pickford, Douglas Fairbanks, Sr and Sid Grauman)
Countess,
Yes, you are right, I had forgotten about that but in reading it seems really bad considering how much I love Doug, Sr!

Just to clarify, this year, the In-n-Out gathering occurred after the *Meet the TCM Staff* panel. The panel was held in Club TCM in the early afternoon (12:30-1:00 start time, I can't remember exactly).
We planned the In-n-Out gathering for after the panel to give people who were still traveling to the City of Angels some extra time to get from the airports to the hotel.
Everyone was back at the hotel in time to get ready for the official *Meet and Greet* party at 4:30 as well as the red carpet walk for Spotlight pass holders.
The plans for an unofficial gathering in 2012 will likely hinge on what TCM plans for Thursday afternoon.

Barb,
On your image:

Lose the img src= at the beginning and the > at the end (keep the rest of the cod), replace them with an exclamation point just before the http (!http,) and another one after the.jpg (.jpg!)and your image should post just fine.

> I'm looking at booking my flight from Winnipeg. What time do events begin on Thursday?
That haven't made any official announcements about the events on the opening day of 2012's Festival.
But, this year, they had the *Meet TCM* panel discussion in the early afternoon.
The official *Meet and Greet* in Club TCM began about 4:30 with the Red Carpet for the Opening Night film beginning about 5:15-5:30ish.
I don't know if they will repeat the same start times in 2012 but it might not be a bad idea to plan accordingly.

Barb,
Just post the image code like this:

*But* place an ! (exclamation point) at the beginning before http and at the end after jpg, your image should post with no hassle.

> remember him?
Charlie, Starkist doesn't want tunas with good taste, they want tunas that taste good.

Fox has been down this road before with other satellite and cable companies. About the 11th hour, things tend to get worked out and the shows go on without disruption.
This time it's just ironic because Fox used to own DirecTV.
-
I think all the bashing and the negative turn the boards have taken may also be contributing factor.
But for those who have expressed concern about him, he is okay.

Aged,
TCM still shows original documentaries and *Private Screenings* where classic stars sit down with Robert O for an extended interview.
In the early years of TCM, they ran a number of documentaries on classic film stars that were originally produced for TNT. Back then, TNT ran classic movies and original documentaries. Once TCM came into being, TNT became a more mainstream channel featuring *Law and Order* and *Bones* reruns as well as original dramatic series.
The good news is that TCM still airs those docs so if you missed them, keep an eye out on the schedule as they often show up.
The clips of interviews that usually show up as part of the *Word of Mouth* promos are put together from interviews that are done by the Turner Archive Project. Before it became part of Time-Warner, the Turner Archive Project was undertaken and underwritten by Ted Turner to preserve the histories of those who worked in front and behind the cameras as well as other studio employees that were part of the studio era.
When Ted Turner sold his media empire, including TCM to Time-Warner in the mid to late 1990s, the Turner Archive Project as well as the Turner film library came under the care of Warner Brothers Home Video.
Hope that helps!

> He seemed to obviously be some kind of professional gunfighter, but we never knew where he came from or where he went or what his whole story really was.
FredC,
I think that mystery about the character really helped Ladd in the role. I can see Clift in the role but I'm glad that Ladd got the role because he really owns it.
Roy,
I'm hoping that the various westerns, old-fashioned and modern day, that various cable and traditional networks have in development, really come to fruition.
How cool would that be to have westerns on tv again!

An effective horror film that I saw on its original release. It's from a novel by former actor, Tom Tryron. Tryron had a bigger career as a writer than he had as an actor as I recall.

> That seems easy for me to understand. It would be to provide Washington with lots of solid, sensitive information, and to prepare for work in the OSS
Plus Victor had escaped from a concentration camp if my memory isn't too hazy and likely would have lots of information about the camps that would help sympathizers raise money for relief efforts during the War as well as the OSS.

> I was curious tho why hasn't TCM tried to get Joan Fontaine or Olivia De Havilland for an interview?
They have and both have turned them down. Not only for *Private Screenings* but also the TCM Film Festival as well. Ms. DeHavilland lives in Paris and is working on her autobiography. While she and Robert O are good friends she has declined offers to sit down for a formal interview.
Ms. Fontaine lives in Carmel and prefers to live her life quietly.
Others who have turned TCM down for *Private Screenings* include Doris Day, Maureen O'Hara, Kim Novak and Vera Miles.

Roy,
I totally agree about Jean Arthur. I think she is just wonderful in this film and have a hard time imagining any other actress of her generation in the role.
I loved your quote about the women of the west. It has such a ring of truth to it. Reading the history of that era as well as the Dust Bowl era, you wonder how those women endured. And yet, they did- generation after generation.
I actually think Ladd is the better choice over Clift. And Holden in the part would have made the role of Joe very different. Who would ever imagine Marian carrying a torch for any man when she has Holden at home?
By the way, have you seen the promos for the new Western series that AMC is about to premiere- *Hell on Wheels*. I hear that while the pilot isn't all that great, the show gets better as it goes along.
From the sounds of things, westerns are about to make a comeback. Various networks all have old-fashioned and modern day western series in development.

It was actress Jeanne Crain. The film Robert O and Alec were spotlighting that week was *A Letter to Three Wives* which starred the wonderful Crain.

Are we just a bunch of old fogies?

For fans of Simon and Garfunkel as well as Crosby,Stills, Nash and Young as well as James Taylor, there is a terrific new book out called Fire and Rain that covers the year 1970 and all the contributions made by the aforementioned singers.
Definitely worth reading.
