> I can think of no reason, other than his mother's influence, for an entire day of TCM programming to be devoted to this journeyman actor.
Isn't this the kind of day that people around here have been asking for? A day devoted to someone who wasn't an A-list star but more of a character actor.
Sounds like TCM just can't please everyone no matter what they do.

> But some people here like to make up a "backstory" for films they watch a lot
FredC,
As I recall, the thread about the "back story" of *Casablanca* was more centered on how Rick and Sam came to Casablanca.
That might help if anyone goes searching for the old thread.

Hey Roy,
I totally agree with you that *Shane* needs to come to Blu and the sooner the better!
I would love to see any screen tests of Monty Clift and William Holden (can you imagine!!) as well. Especially in light of Holden getting the role of Joe Gillis when Clift decided at almost the eleventh hour he didn't want to do the movie.
Not sure that I buy Kate Hepburn in the role of Marian but hopefully, the bonus features would reveal some footage.
Here's hoping.........

> But, since you know the story behind his eyepatch, do you know the story behind Nicholas Ray's?
I don't know it as a fact but I've read over the years that Ray lost the vision in his right eye in the late 1960s and began wearing the eye patch.
-
> Didn't Raoul Walsh also wear an eyepatch?
Yes, he lost an eye when a jackrabbit jumped through the windshield of his car when he was on location filming *In Old Arizona*.
John Ford, Andre De Toth and Nick Ray all wore eye patches as well.

Happy Birthday, Barb! May your day be filled with lots of amore!

> TCM isn't showing anything called "Master de Baters". What are you talking about?
> And what the hell is all of this talk about "putting a modern slant" on old clips. How did "liberal agenda" get into any of this???
>Are we talking about the AFI Masterclass thing? TCM always does stuff like this. What does Steven Spielberg talking about his movies and collaboration with John Williams have to do with a "liberal agenda".
THANK YOU!! I thought I was the only one wondering exactly what the original OP was complaining about and it certainly didn't help that other posters jumped on the band wagon without actually watching the *Now Playing* promo but felt the need to pile on without any evidence.
And exactly what is the complaint?
That TCM is establishing a partnership with the American Film Institute?
That as part of that partnership, TCM and the AFI are spending an hour out of the entire month of November talking about Steven Spielberg's collaboration with John Williams?
An hour out of the entire month, really that's the complaint?
But, somehow, just automatically believing that TCM is going to the dark side without actually having seen the promo or considering the context seems to be the norm around here these days.

Here's mine (in order):
Joel McCrea as Star of the Month
*Secret of the Incas*
*El Cid*
-
On Demand choices seem to vary depending on which cable/satellite service one has.
-
The ending of *Cinema Paradiso* (best valentine to film ever) includes shots from *Bitter Rice*!

> Is it possible the studio doesn't want to invest the money to digitize their copies for television broadcast?
LFN,
That's a great observation and possibly one of the major drawbacks to more of the Universal library not being made available for rental to TCM and other networks.
Hopefully, like Sony before them, Universal will learn that a partnership with TCM can infuse new life's blood into a part of their film library they tend to neglect.
Here's hoping.....

> Am I the only one out there who likes Chris Isaak as a host?
Tiki,
Not at all. I saw him introduce an Elvis film at the TCM Film Festival this past spring and he was great trading quips with Mary Anne Mobley and TCM's own Tom Brown.
He was terrific then and he has been terrific subbing for Robert O.
Like you, I think it would be great if TCM and Chris could work together to do more together!

> His wraparounds are done in a day I've heard.
hibi,
As he does the wraparounds for the entire month, they typically take more than a day to film.
In addition to the wraparounds, there is the filming for the monthly Guest Programmer and as well as wraparounds for *The Essentials* and special promotional event promos like the TCM Cruise and Film Festival.
In addition as the face of TCM, he hosts film screenings across the country, musical events usually involving film and film music, speaking engagements, the TCM Film Festival (and the events that lead up that), the upcoming TCM Cruise as well as various speaking engagements and his writing.
While he doesn't work a traditional 40 hour work week the way many of us do, he does stay busy with TCM events outside the office so to speak.
He had surgery. He had time to recuperate and take a vacation. That's all we've been told. He's entitled to his privacy regarding all of that and neither TCM or Robert O owes us an explanation beyond that.
He's coming back, looks good and is excited about returning to his busy schedule.
That should be enough.
-
atlantic,
After three turns as Robert O's co-host of *The Essentials*, it sounds like there will be a new co-host when the show kicks off a new season next spring.
It probably has less to do with Baldwin's politics and more to do with wanting a new face sitting across from Robert O.
As Alec B is part of the TCM family, he may continue to do the occasional documentary (his doc/conversation with Gene Wilder a few years back was quite good) for TCM.

Lyle Talbot twice in two days!
Can Nat Pendleton be far behind?
Hoping, hoping, hoping........

Flamengo,
Check out this thread, I think it has the info you are looking for:

> Now that TCM has the rights to their films
Dom,
While TCM and Universal are working together to bring more of the Universal film library (which includes the pre-1948 Paramount film library but not Paramount's silent film library) to the channel, TCM does not have the rights to the entire library.
Universal retains the actual rights to the films and TCM has broadcast rights.
But those broadcast rights are for certain titles in the film library not the entire film library.
There is no actual list of which Universal titles TCM has broadcast rights to so we will have to wait and see when the monthly schedules are released.
Hope that helps.

> If it's still a feature, where do I go to find it ?
It's still there but I the database recently had some changes to it so its placement may have changed.
The Remind Me function is now in two places. One is on the same line as the date and upcoming broadcast time.
The second one is to the right of the Email icon located below the title, date and upcoming broadcast time.
To the left of it are the social media icons.

> kids could play outside without worrying about being kidnapped, people had jobs, america was thriving, . . . any movie from the 30s.
Ah the power of movies.
The 1930s was the Great Depression and Americans were facing catastrophic unemployment, bread lines, soup kitchens and the Dust Bowl. Movie attendance was up because Americans needed the escape the movies provided, one where the grim reality of their lives didn't always intrude.
As for children, between the Lindbergh baby kidnapping and the threat of polio, parents had their fair share of worry about their children.
And children were often pressed into working to help families make ends meet thus cutting those idyllic childhoods we so often see in the movies quite short.

Wasn't there another poster with this same issue about a year, year and a half ago?
Or am I just imagining that?

> Isn't this reaction just a teensy-weensy bit over the top?
It's how Astro rolls or perhaps I should say, posts.

It's *On Borrowed Time* with Lionel Barrymore and Bobs Watson.
