  1. > Still don't have an answer to the first one but when I really sat down to think about it I want to say that MAYBE it started off with the guy being a struggling musician and the woman was maybe also a musician or a dancer and that's why they wanted their own nightclub.

    Classiccouple,

It sure sounds like *It All Came True* with Ann Sheridan, Jeffrey Lynn and Humphrey Bogart.

  2. > Since they originally said he'd be back in October I pray this isn't just a polite stall to prevent saying he won't be coming back at all.

    Yancey,

I think we all leaped to the conclusion that Robert O would be back in October meant he would be back on the air. We didn't stop to consider it might have meant he would be back in the studio.

I hope we see him on the air in time for Thanksgiving.

    How cool would that be?

  3. > Is this something the LIBRARY OF CONGRESS asked for?

If not the LOC, then perhaps Warners because they would prefer to release the DVD rather and not have bootleg copies competing with their sales. Clearing the rights issues which kept this film off screens (and ultimately home video) for over fifty years couldn't have been cheap and DVD sales is one way to off-set those costs.

    > Can TCM really say they show movies as they were meant to be seen when the bug shows up like that?

We may not like the bug, constant or not, but TCMProgrammr addressed the situation when the bug was first introduced and it is basically at the insistence of the studios to cut down on bootlegging.

I'd rather have the bug than not be able to see a large variety of classic films on TCM.

    > On a side note...

    .

    > Can TCM really be called commercial free when it airs promos for DVDs and other TCM memorabilia?

I'd rather see TCM airing channel appropriate revenue making DVD promos and memorabilia promos than have to go the revenue route of running commercials for anything in between films or during the film.

  4. > BTW, how did you find out the studio double-booked the film?

    Robbie,

I have Encore Westerns and *Lonely Are the Brave* has been playing all month on Encore so I started to wonder about TCM also running the film. knowing that usually broadcast contracts are exclusive to the channel (thanks markfp2 - he used to work in broadcast!)

And then TCM had to pull the film and I put two and two together.

  5. > Ya know if they do this to The Constant Nymph tomorrow night there will be a revolt Spartacus would be proud of.

Chances a pretty slim. Unlike *Lonely Are the Brave*, the *Constant Nymph* isn't running on any other network so there should be no problem with TCM actually having the broadcast rights to this one.

As Universal messed up the broadcast rights on *Lonely Are the Brave* this week, I wonder if they will throw in some other goodie for us down the road when TCM is able to rebook the film?

That would be a good thing.

  6. cinemanut,

The studio that owns the film double booked it. It has been running on Encore Western channel for the last few weeks and they still has the broadcast rights.

TCM should have pulled the trailer from rotation this past weekend but the fact they had to pull the film is not their fault.

The fault belongs to the studio who double booked the film.

  7. > The danger in not responding is that the false impression could turn into being perceived as reality if no one counters what is said. I don't expect it to be challenged over at WhiteNewsNow, but if it's to be brought up in an open forum such as this, then so be it.

    Clore,

I agree with you. What surprises me is the number of posters, regular denizens of TCM City, who didn't see Ben M deliver the wrap-around and yet, felt the need to jump in to the fray and continue the attack against Ben M based on the OP's original post which came from a website that not only attacked Ben M but disparaged Billy Wilder for making "propaganda that led many to believe in Holocaust."

That anyone here is giving such a website and its writings any credence over posters here who actually saw and heard Ben M's wraparound is astounding.

I support your support of Ben M and Billy Wilder and your stand to make sure that posters here realize where this 'canned controversy' originated from.

  8. Robert O. does not write the wraparounds he does and neither does Ben M.

TCM did not disparage Lindbergh's name and neither did Ben.

All they said was that John Kerr (who was closer in age to Lindbergh when he flew over the Atlantic than Jimmy Stewart was at the time the film was produced) chose not to take the role because he did not agree with Lindbergh's politics.

How that disparages Lindbergh, Kerr or Stewart is a big leap from what was actual written (not by Ben) and what Ben said over the weekend on TCM.

And how any of it is Ben M's fault for reading TCM produced copy (which is his job) is beyond me.

But some come here who have an axe to grind with Ben and it seems, they will make great leaps of logic and judgment to do so and then stand back and watch the ensuing storm that happens in the face of their illogical leap.

Where this little tidbit came from that the OP found and basically posted here tells a lot more about this "canned" controversy and certainly looks like another attempt to yet again railroad Ben M for basically reading TCM written, approved and vetted, copy.

Before the OP posted here, there was only one site (white news now) that was talking about this "controversy" and was the first reference when you googled it.

Now when you google the topic at hand, TCM City is in the number one position and the fact that we are actually given credence to that "controversy" here by continuing the dialog is rather astonishing.

  9. Fred,

I totally agree with you about Winona. I thought she did a great job and appreciate that she took time out of her life to do this.

On another note, it's one thing to post about how you may not care for a Guest Programmer, Guest Host, Private Screening Interviewee, Alec, Ben or Robert O.

One post is usually plenty to let the rest of us know that you (the universal you) were unhappy with their delivery, their skill or the mistakes they made.

Anything more really starts to sound like ragging on them just because we can.

As for the guest hosts that have been standing in for Robert O while he has been away, we may not like all of them (or any of them from the sounds of some posts over the summer) but they stepped in without a lot of notice because they like the channel and they wanted to help out at a time when Robert O needed them to.

The least we can do is acknowledge that while they may not hit out of the park every day, they are doing this as a favor.

Instead of constantly ragging on them, maybe we can appreciate that they care enough about our favorite channel and our favorite host to take the time to help out?

    Just a thought.

  10. > And "Mr. Cutter" seems so nice....

Oh now Chief, you know he is and for the record, he likes *Dexter*, too.

I guess you'll probably give me grief for liking *The Walking Dead* -the zombie show- as well. MrCutter certainly gives me grief on that one.

Call me crazy but I like not your normal network fare type shows.

If it helps, I adore *Mad Men*.

But you probably figured that one.

You know we both love Buster, especially *The Cameraman*.

That was one of the highlights of the Film Festival (for both of us) seeing it with Vince G and the Nighthawks providing the musical score!

  11. > TCM blew it, you guys really blew it.

Why do posters automatically assume that that TCM is at fault?

As I wrote in a similar thread in Hot Topics, if it has been pulled from the schedule it may be because it has been playing on another network the last couple of weeks and the broadcast rights may still be with that other network.

If another network currently has the broadcast rights, then it is the fault of the studio/distributor for double-booking the film, not TCM's.
