  1. > I never thought about films being ruined. (snip) But your post just shows that much is lost forever in a riot of this kind.

    MsW,

The films aren't ruined and lost forever nor are the masters. What was lost, if I am reading the article correctly, are the DVDs and Blu-ray discs that were stored int the warehouse.

Sony and the other distributors can replace the discs if they can afford to do so financially.

Unlike the fire on the Universal lot a few years ago that did include irreplaceable acetate masters of vocal recordings, the DVDs and Blu-ray discs in this fire can be replaced.

  2. > lzcutter would have gone crazy with worry about Buddy. ; )

Darn tootin', I "heart" Buddy! He did more heavy lifting per episode than Buck or Wanda but, to his credit, Buck made sure that Buddy got his deserved atta boys!

I've got my fingers crossed that maybe the *Flash Gordon* serial could come to TCM (along with Joel McCrea as SOTM and *Secret of the Incas* in prime time!)

  3. Michael,

3rdManTheme wrote the following in the Leonard Maltin thread:

Only a jew is allowed to pass judgment of everybody & everything. & only a superjew from New York can hate all New York movies Because they happen to be determined to have a pov that is different from hollywood jews. Hollywood jews are sellouts.

I cut and pasted it here in case he edits it and doesn't click the edited by box.

The thread can be found here:

Thought you would want to know.

  4. > Or maybe I'm wrong - would anyone know if Universal owns the silent Paramounts?

    Tom,

Back in the 1950s when Paramount sold part of their film library to MCA-Universal, Par retained the rights and control of their silent film library.

Paramount owns their silent film library and their post-1948 film library. Thus, the silent version of *Beau Geste* would be obtained through Paramount. It recently screened at the Academy as part of their summer film series.

Universal owns Paramount's film library from approximately 1930 to 1948.

    Hope that helps.

  5. > But poor team Joel McCrea...will they ever get their own month? Another year has come and gone.

    TB,

As the original instigator of the Joel McCrea for SOTM thread, I have no doubt that TCM will make it so.

It took a few years for them to pry my last request from Universal's vault, *Five Graves to Cairo* but they did so and I am confident they will deliver on this one.

I would rather they take their time and try to get his grandson, Wyatt, to co-host with Robert O and also try to get some of those seldom seen Universal westerns out of the vault as well.

So, I can patiently wait. Besides, it gives MsW more time to be creative. :)

  6. > ps- Eve Arden was the best, but it is disturbing to imagine her bumping uglies with (real life husband) Danny Kaye.

Luckily for many, that image wouldn't be real. Eve Arden had two husbands, neither were Danny Kaye.

The first one was Ned Bergen and the one that stuck was Brooks West.

Danny Kaye's only wife was Sylvia Fine.

  7. Be sure to check the schedule as there are silents scattered throughout the schedule from Lon Chaney's day to others.

*Silent Sundays* returns in September and Buster Keaton is Star of the Month in October so silents are still a priority to TCM.

  8. > Don't doubt yourself, VX. I feel certain it was on here, on TCM, it seems a while ago, but it was here. It was shown only once or twice. Someone here knows for certain.

It's been requested, especially for days that spotlight Welles, Fontaine or O'Brien, but, so far, no cigar.

My guess is, like others, that it's been shown on FMC and, for reasons known only to Fox, they prefer to keep it for their own channel.

  12. > Why is "The Long, Long Trailer" never shown letterboxed? Why is it always full screen? Can't Tcm, these great cinemaphiles, get a hold of a letterboxed print?

There is no letterbox print. While the film was released in 1953, it wasn't shot in widescreen.

Because of that, TCM does show it in its proper aspect ratio. It shouldn't be letterboxed.

  13. > I've often wondered if it's the lighting and the fact that they're often in b&w makes a difference?

That's part of it. Another major part is the star system and the studio itself. Stars back then were photographed at home usually dressed to the hilt, hair done and make up on. These photos were called "candid" and were used to show the public that the stars were really just normal people who lounged around their lavish homes just as the normal movie goer did. But those "candid" photos were far from reality.

Also, too, the studio publicity departments made sure that stars were dressed to the hilt for any occasion where there might be cameras and they were very good at squelching unflattering photos or compromising photos.

Thus, we tend to have filtered view of the stars of that era compared to today's stars who dress more comfortable, do go out not dressed to the hilt and the tabloids that are always ready to expose a star in an unflattering photo or compromising situation.

  14. Chief,

I know the *Lawless Frontier* poster is very stylized but I love it. Not sure why, but it caught my eye this morning when I saw it and about 12 hours later, I still love it.

Thank you for this great gallery!! So many gems that don't always get the exposure they deserve but now, thanks to your keen eye, we get to enjoy them!

All hail, K! (sorry for the homage to *Men in Black* but I thought it fitting).

  15. > Has anyone else noticed or does anyone know if he has suffered a minor stroke or something??

The last time Robert O was the evening host of TCM was the 4th of July weekend.

According to a notice posted on TCM.com on July 5th, Robert O had minor surgery that was successful. After recuperating, he will go on vacation and is slated to return to TCM in October.

Robert Wagner, Jane Powell and Tippi Hedren were weekly guest hosts in July.

Ben M is hosting *Summer Under the Stars*, currently underway and lasting all month, every evening this month (and Saturday and Sunday daytime).

There has been no official word who will be guest hosting in September.

    Yet.
