Sounds like one of the versions of Imitiation of Life, probably the Claudette Colbert version from the 1930s.

Welcome to the boards! I have no idea what movie this is, but you could clarify something. Who goes out the window? The nurse who is covering, or the patient? Also, about when did you see the film? Was it in black and white, or color? Remember any star who was in it?
