  1. *It's really about a man whose thirst for vengeance begins to turn him into the very thing he was determined to destroy. As Esther tells him, "Hatred is turning you to stone. It's as though you had become Messala!"*

Despite the dialogue, that doesn't quite ring true. Messala was motivated by ambition, not hatred of Judah. He used Judah's family as a means to achieve his objective of having the Judeans "fear" him. Judah was motivated by hatred of Messala. Ambition turned Messala to stone; hatred turned Judah to stone. So perhaps the end result was the same; I would agree with that.

  2. Gone With The Wind is an entertaining soap opera, centered around a woman's obsession with another man. She never gets him, loses the man who really loves her, and in the final analysis, learns nothing.

Ben-Hur is the story of a man driven by revenge. When he finally achieves that revenge, it is a hollow victory, because he is still filled with hatred. Only after listening to the words of Christ does he finally let go of his hatred. He learns and can move on.

I take Ben-Hur over Gone With The Wind every time.

  3. The "hair-down secretary" bit is spoofed in That Touch of Mink. Gig Young asks a secretary to do it, without improvement, and he says "funny, it always seems to work in the movies."
