What a great talent he was ... and Italian too

lzcutter, is it possible for a poster to plagiarize his own posts?

-
Yes, great title theme, by my favorite, Henry Mancini. I have that theme on one of his albums (yes, good old vinyl). And after seeing Ross Martin on TV for many years, it was interesting to see him portray a real creep.

I believe Sam Wood was famous for saying to Groucho Marx, "I guess you can't make an actor out of clay," to which Groucho responded "nor a director out of Wood."

I think this movie might be why "Dr. Stranglove" was made a few years later as a comedy.
And I think that's why FAIL SAFE probably wasn't taken too seriously, since DR. STRANGELOVE was released first, if I recall.

Wonderful film, even though it's on the depressing side. I've wanted to see this film since I was a teenager, so I'm glad TCM showed it.
I found this information from the book "Science Fiction in the Cinema," by John Baxter:
The director's cut ran almost three hours. The sailor Swain, who stayed behind in San Francisco, had a bigger role in the original cut. There were more scenes of deserted streets, and more sequences of people preparing to die.
Does anyone know how this film was received upon its release?

Pinky (1949) is a film directed by Elia Kazan. The movie was adapted by Philip Dunne and Dudley Nichols from the novel by Cid Ricketts Sumner. Originally John Ford was hired to direct the film, but was replaced after one week because producer Darryl F. Zanuck was unhappy with the dailies. Although Lena Horne and other black actresses were considered for the role, producer Darryl F. Zanuck chose to cast a white actress for box-office reasons. Lena Horne initially campaigned to play the title role in this movie (she is light enough to photograph "white"), but in the end, the movie studio felt white American audiences would feel more comfortable with a white actress, especially since love scenes with a white actor were involved. Released by Twentieth Century Fox, it starred Jeanne Crain, Ethel Barrymore (who was screenwriter Philip Dunne's godmother), and Ethel Waters.
The film tells the story of a young, light-skinned African American woman, passing as white, who becomes torn between the needs of her grandmother and the love of a white doctor.

Of course, this movie was protested by nasty right-wing bastards.
Hey, an original thought. Not necessarily a fact, just a thought.

The protagonist of this film, Jake LaMotta, is a pathetic, paranoid psychopath who suspects that his wife, Vicki, brother, Joey, and everybody else is conspiring against him. Eventually, he ruins his life, going from middleweight champion of the world to a two-bit night club stand-up act. And that's the end.
And what's with the boxing scenes? Spit and blood are flying all over the place in slow motion and nothing looks the least bit real. Speaking of real, LaMotta supposedly marries Vicki when she's fifteen. Moriarty didn't look fifteen to me, unless it was dog years.

My VCR is programmed and ready to go for ON THE BEACH, which I've never seen. I will be on the lookout for the "banner" scene, and also, as usual, any mathematical mistakes in the movie ... heh heh.

Here are some people who DIED while working on a movie:
I wasn't aware that television shows and newscasts qualify as movies. Do you ever take the time to read your own posts after you copy them from Wikipedia?
At least look at the title of the Wikipedia article you used:

Joan Crawford on TCM March 2008!!
