  1. Teenagers Battle The Thing (1958)

    Directed by Don Fields

Boring crap (I started falling asleep during the opening credits) about five high school kids and two adults who go on some kind of half-**** archaeological expedition in the southwest and unearth a mummy who comes back to life as a hairy-looking freak. The fun begins when they discover a stone tablet on the ground. When one of the kids asks if the writing on it was made by Indians, one of the “experts” declares it was written by cavemen, “perhaps as ancient as Pithecanthropus Erectus.” That’s about as risqué as this film gets. Naturally, these clowns then dig up the tablet and find a cave underneath. This is probably where the director and screenwriter were hiding. In short order, they bring a mummy to the surface, although it looks more like a Plaster of Paris statue. Eventually the thing wakes up and kills one person who apparently just wandered onto the set. The police show up - one guy, that’s all the producer could afford. He is completely useless, and is attacked by the creature. Unfortunately, he survives.

I wonder how long it took for someone to come up with the title.

Footage from this dud was used years later in The Curse of Bigfoot, which I now have no desire to see.

My Three Sons' Uncle Charley-- William Demarest?

Sorry Princess, he is not William Demarest. The television series in which this actor was featured started in the mid 70s.

You forgot about the other cameo performance in this flick, Rich.

Where they wheel in Bush Sr., and while testifying, he begins making vague references to magician David Copperfield.

(...after of course pulling two little steel balls from his pocket and begins juggling them around in his right hand)

I believe there is plenty of material left for sequels.

  4. Frankengroper

Bizarre schlock fest features Harvey Weinstein as a perverted scientist who creates a short, chubby, nerdy-looking creature which he names Al. Al roams the countryside, inappropriately touching people. Al is finally caught when his hands stick to Kim Kardashian’s posterior, at which time he screams “Help, I’ve felt and I can’t get off!” Al is dragged into court and appears before Judge Roy Moore. Donald Trump and Bill Clinton appear as character witnesses for Al. Trump says something weird about kittens, while Clinton spends his time cruising the jury for chicks. The case collapses when Judge Moore is called to attend a shotgun wedding (his own). Charlie Rose has a cameo as a streaker.

    Could it be Edgar Buchanan?

    Not Buchanan.

This actor had a few bits in silent films, but had a long career in sound films, and appeared in a successful television series.

    Here’s a double bill for you …

5:15 a.m.  Perversion For Profit (1965). I don't know if this is still in the line-up but this is how it read when first announced.

This film goes back to at least 1962, as it was being shown at anti-pornography meetings in Los Angeles. I wonder if it was "released" to everyone in 1965.

midnight.  Scarface (1932).   Fantastic Howard Hawks gangster film shot by Lee Garmes.  A restored 4K version was screened at the London Film Festival earlier this year.   Perhaps a new blu ray is in the offing?

"I think these gangster pictures should be stopped. They are bad for the kiddies." ----- Al Capone

    Greetings All,

I work in small theater and I have decided that I want expose more people to silent films. I have been given the green light for my project and while I have many thoughts of my own I was wondering what silent film would you play first to really grab people to spark an interest so they may return for future screenings? Any input would be welcome.     CHEERS!   BombayBob

I must say I envy you! This sounds like a great idea.  I hope you can get someone to provide a music score as well.

My pick would be Phantom of the Opera, especially if you can get a pianist or organist to accompany the film. The others have suggested some good films as well (although, I think with Chaplin, he is an acquired taste). I'd also consider Sunrise and Street Angel, which are fine love stories. For an initial showing, I'd stay away from longer films though (say, over two hours) as patrons might not be willing to invest that much time, especially if they are new to silent films.

Thanks, Rich.  Did you know that Morton Downey Sr. was from Wallingford, CT?  I believe that's not far from you.

I found that out after I posted the photo. Wallingford is about a 40-minute ride from where I am.

There was another Bennett sister, Barbara, who was an actress.  She was married to singer Morton Downey, with whom she had five children, including Morton Downey Jr.  Could photo #1 be Barbara and Morton Sr.?

Correct Miles, nice work! Viewers in NYC might also remember the Morton Downey Jr. show, which played in the mid to late 80s. That was one crazy show!

    Your thread.

  11. I am getting more comfortable with this "oldest posts first" setup, and can certainly work around it if needed. But there are some odd consequences of this. I've noticed posters reacting to posts I made years ago, probably because they pop up near the beginning of the threads now. The scary part is that I don't even remember posting some of the stuff. Also, this setup allows anyone to resurrect very old threads, an action which used to be frowned upon by previous moderators (not that the policy ever stopped me from doing it).

  12. I use Firefox and don't have any issues. I do have issues like the ones mentioned when I use Internet Explorer.

I have not tried embedding a youtube link yet, but I see there is a "chain" icon which you can click on to enter a link, so that may be how it's done.

I do like the fact that we can simply drag images into the reply area, rather than having to use an image hosting server.

The emojis are something I can do without.
