  3. He was great! Everything that he added to the discussion was on target and yes have him back for more. He is an intellectual so that is why his comments are a little above the ordinary and I like that.
  4. Check your signal strength for each channel you like to watch on a regular basis to see if it is constantly at the same high level. A tree that has grown a few feet into the path of the signal can cause trouble and sun spots can do the same.
  5. It is on Sundance and I hope you got a chance to record it along with the 15 minute short by Isabella Rossellini.
  6. Hopefully they will have the films of Mario Bava, Dario Argento, David Cronenberg, Anthony M. Dawson, Riccardo Freda and John M. Old on also.
  7. Shipmates (1931), When Ladies Meet (1933), Riptide (1934) and Biography of a Bachelor Girl (1935) are the ones that I have been waiting for. I got a scare for a few seconds when there was a blank screen at the beginning of Biography of a Bachelor Girl.
  8. Here are some of the Brittish films that I have in my film collection; I Know Where I'm Going (1945) D. M. Powell, E. Pressburger The Ruling Class (1972) Directed by Peter Medak Cromwell (1970) Directed by Ken Hughes Carlton-Browne of the F.O (1959) Directed by Roy Boulting, Jeffrey Dell The City of the Dead (1960) Directed by John Llewellyn Moxey Darling (1965) Directed by John Schlesinger The Maggie (1954) Directed by Alexander Mackendrick The Horse's Mouth (1958) Directed by Ronald Neame Billy Liar (1963) Directed by John Schlesinger The Man in the White Suit (1951) Directed by Alexander Mackendrick The Captain's Paradise (1953) Directed by Anthony Kimmins The Mutations (1974) Directed by Jack Cardiff Two-Way Stretch (1960) Directed by Robert Day The Queen of Spades (1949) Directed by Thorold Dickinson Dead of Night (1945) Directed by Alberto Cavalcanti, Charles Crichton........ Once you get hooked on them, you just want more and the old Hollywood stuff just don't cut it.
  9. TCMProgrammer said a few months back (paraphrasing here of course) that when Ted Turner owned the films (1994 - 2001 or so) TCM had more freedom in showing different things. That is also why TCM had fewer repeats in the past than they do now. Now that Warner owns the library they are more limited or restricted in what they can show because they can't just sort through the library and pick things out, they have to see if it is available first.
  10. I read this on the IMDB last night before watching Pinky and the whole time watching it I kept thinking what a great film (better film) this could have been with Lena in that role. Lena Horne initially campaigned to play the title role in this movie (she is light enough to photograph "white"), but in the end, the movie studio felt white American audiences would feel more comfortable with a white actress, especially since love scenes with a white actor were involved. Jeanne Crain pulled it off ok but Lena could have added much more to this role.
  11. There is a tendency for Caucasians to confuse race with nationality and religious affiliation. To be Italian is to be native of or an inhabitant of Italy, a person of Italian descent speaking the language of Italy. You could just as easily replace the wording Italian with Irish, Danish, Canadian or Portuguese. In each case you would be referring to a nationality and not a race. In each nationality you would find numerous races, not just one. To be Arabic is not the same as being Islamic because the later is a religious faith of Muslims inherent of the religion founded by Muhammad. To become more educated on this subject would be a worthwhile learning experience for everyone. And who better to do this than those of you here who are of different ethnic backgrounds. In summation, to belittle a race is to disgrace the whole group, lumping them all together as one.
  12. I have to add this film to all of you who get Sundance along with "My Dad Is 100 Years Old" / Special/Other, 15 Mins. SUNDAE May 21 06:00am by Isabella Rossellini. Open City (1946) Sundance Channel May 20 07:35am **** (Rated NR) A priest helps the Italian underground fight the Nazis in occupied Rome. Cast: Aldo Fabrizi, Anna Magnani, Marcello Pagliero, Maria Michi, Harry Feist, Francesco Grandjacquet, Giovanna Galletti, Vito Annichiarico, Carla Revere, Nando Bruno. Director: Roberto Rossellini.
  13. The Wedding Night (1935) with Anna Sten was a great film. Sony now owns the best Library of films, that is why they show up on Showtime, TMC, Flix, Sundance and TCM. I'm glad that TCM and Sony have worked something out behind the scenes so that these films can now have a home. In my eyes there is no need to feel any different about Warner and Sony, GM, Ford or Toyota and Honda. It's the New World Order that Clinton and Bush have built and we all voted for them so we have to live with it.
  14. The two most important films to have recorded would have been: West of Zanzibar (1928) directed by Tod Browning. This film was remade as Kongo (1932) which was on a few weeks ago. Now you have both versions to watch and compare. This Side of Heaven (1934) This film is rarely shown and few have even seen it.
  15. Thanks for the recommendation on Chushingura, I will check it out.I like long films so that is no problem at all, in fact I Iean towards them and BBC series of the 60's and 70's that run 14 hours or more (The Forsyte Saga (1967), The Duchess of Duke Street (1976), The Mayor of Casterbridge (1978),The Pallisers (1974) etc.
  16. 17. The Fox Movie Channel has better stereo sound than TCM anyway so you are better off catching these 20th Century Fox films on FMC anyway. The King and I is much better on FMC than TCM as far as sound quality goes. I like TCM but their sound quality is really below average.

  19. What Anti-War films or TV Episodes stand clear in your mind leaving you with a true understanding of the horrors and futile endeavors of war? This film is airing now which is a good example of such films How I Won the War (1967) This film features former Beatle John Lennon and Roy Kinnear as ill-fated enlisted men in under the inept command of Lieutenant Earnest Goodbody. The story unwinds mostly in flashbacks of Lieutenant Goodbody who has lower-class beginnings and education which make him a poor officer who commands one of the worst units of the army. Each deceased soldier returns to the movie in a different color. Made when the Vietnam War was in full swing, Vietnam was the conflict being mocked, but this film gains in notoriety because of the Iraq War.
  20. "Soldier In The Rain," "Lord Love A Duck," "Pretty Poison," "Play It As It Lays," "A Safe Place," "I Walk The Line," "Who'll Stop The Rain," and "Looking For Mr. Goodbar." My bet is that TCM would love to have these films on. The PG rated films may fly but the R rated ones will be on Sundance and not on TCM. Play It As It Lays is on the Sundance channel now. Maybe after TCM starts up their West Coast Feed they can look into some of these films without complaints about them showing up on the West Coast in Prime Time.
  21. I want to see the John Lennon and Yoko Ono interview again! I have not seen it in 20 years! TCM please, please include this one.
  22. I'm very happy that you got a chance to see Europa Europa. This is the kind of film that asks the right questions and gives us an insight into the apathetic condition that we often allow ourselves to drift into. My favorite scene is when he drive in the bus throw the ghetto to find his mother. He sees her, he attempts to open the window and everyone else says, What are you doing!!!!!!!!!! I'm trying to get some fresh air, and they all laugh! They in the end use the excuse that they did not know what was going on, but the truth is that they did not want to know! When we give up our right to think for ourselves, we become blind instruments for a state of mind which breeds deception.

  24. Thanks Fred. I notice that the sound is back to normal today, it's good to know that someone else can tell the difference when there is distortion going on.
  25. I'm working on my ideas now, here is a rough draft of what I have so please excuse any incoherent thoughts. 1. I included films like Westerns that I would not watch put knowing that there are people who do like them I felt it was important to have these films represented. In considering these films I attempted to pick ones that had more added dimensions such as comedy, which the films ?THE ROUNDERS? (1965) ?CATLOW? (1971) display. The film ?WESTWARD THE WOMEN? (1951) is an unusual Western where women are the heros. ?COLORADO TERRITORY? (1949) which is a remake of director Raoul Walsh's own classic 'High Sierra' would be interesting in terms of how Raoul Walsh would re-interpit this story with Joel McCrea. 2. The rstraints I imposed on myself had to do with the fact that many of the films I included were released in the 1960?s and 70?s (22 films). I therefore made sure that the films released during the 1920?s and 1930?s were also represented such as pre-codes(16 films made between 1927 and 1932). I included (15 film) released between 1934 to 1949, and (25 films) between 1950 to 1959. So that is 56 films to 22 for a weeks schedule. 3. I feel that I did a poor job representing films that younger people would like. If I were teaching Art to kids K through 12, I would need to become familiar with what interests them and what they deem important in order to be a good teacher. If I made no attempt to provide lesson plans that dealt with this I would not reach them and I would not be a good teacher. The same is true for a programmer who wants to include this age group. He or she must keep up with events and situations that teens can relate to when providing films for this age group. More thoughts later.
