  1. My quick impression about this filmlover is: ....that if you had a month devoted to one studio, you might get to many contract players like Betty Davis, Bogart films for example. Doing the challenge I noticed that Columbia and Paramount had many of the interesting films along with Rank Film Corp. So if TCM ever did this they would have to lease at least 1/3 of that schedule out to include these other studios in order to balance everything out. Just my thought on it.
  2. I rented Anna and the King from Netflix and it took me two days to watch it. I would get tired of looking at it after 30 minutes and put it away. It was no where near as good as Anna and the King of Siam which it seemed to try to be a remake of. Her son didn't get killed as in the original which followed the book.
  3. I'm taking in all the schedules now that are coming in and I do like your Father's Day line-Up. "Life With Father" really caught my attention, making me want to pull out my 15 year old copy on VHS and watch it again (although it is in poor shape so I hope TCM will show it on Fathers day). Your Judy Holliday line up made me think about "Good Neighbor Sam" for some reason, another of my favorite films (I guess because of Jack Lemmon).
  4. Stewart Granger had that British charm that so many others of his caliber had like Alec Guinness, David Niven, Leslie Howard, Charles Laughton, Dirk Bogarde and Robert Donat. "Sparks Fly Upwards" and "Saraband for Dead Lovers" are films that Stewart Granger liked the most. The reason he worked so well with Deborah Kerr and Jean Simmons is that he had romantic feelings for both of them and it came through on the screen.
  5. It was about five or six months ago but your point is well stated. TCM should maybe think about a Month Tribute to some of these directors. The Yiddish films of Edgar G. Ulmer happened at least two years ago and they only did it once because I have them on VHS and I don't do that format anymore. They are like Fiddler on the Roof but much better. I hope they will consider another tribute to Edgar G. Ulmer in the near future.
  6. Thanks, I did enjoy doing the challenge. It was a learning experience searching through the film database looking for films by each director and then reading their biography. Michael Curtiz was easy to pick films out for because he made so many films for Warner Bros. Some of the others that made films for Universal, Paramount and Columbia were a little tricky. The MGM British Studio Division is interesting because MGM wanted to use these new British actors and they decided that it was less expensive to build a studio there instead of bringing them here to Hollywood. These films were made at a time in the 1960's and 1970's when MGM Hollywood was having a hard time getting it right. 20th Century Fox, Columbia and Paramount were making films that seemed to do much better at the box office. The creative juices seemed to flow for MGM UK while the tap was turned off here.
  7. You are in luck because Penelope is on this coming Saturday!!!!! Penelope (1966) Turner Classic Movies Mar 25 12:00am Movies, 120 Mins. Enjoy!

  10. For those of us who are doing the challenge, it's a Paramount Pictures release and we only get two leased films so The Cat and the Canary (1939) will be hard to work in. I have had to leave out many films that I would like to include because of this. By doing the challenge, you get to know what kinds of limits TCMProgrammer is forced to work with.
  11. Was Fellini's Notti di Cabiria, Le (Nights of Cabiria) ever on TCM? Giulietta Masina was so great with all the expressions that she could make with her eyes. I have not seen Sceicco bianco, Lo (The White Sheik) which I believe was her first film. 81/2 was good and I enjoyed it but I could not see why all the critics say it was the best film ever made.
  12. Thanks for the heads up on this film. It gets great ratings on IMDB so I will give it a shot. This Sporting Life (1963) Runtime: 134 min Country: UK Language: English Color: Black and White Rank Film Distributors Ltd. (1963) (UK) (theatrical) In Northern England in the early 1960s, Frank Machin is mean, tough and ambitious enough to become an immediate star in the rugby league team run by local employer Weaver. Machin lodges with Mrs Hammond, whose husband was killed in an accident at Weaver's, but his impulsive and angry nature stop him from being able to reach her as he would like. He becomes increasingly frustrated with his situation, and this is not helped by the more straightforward enticements of Mrs Weaver. Trivia for This Sporting Life (1963) * Feature film debut of Edward Fox. * It was 'Willaim Hartnell' 's apperance in this film that brought him to the attention of Verity Lambert, producer of "Doctor Who" (1963) * At the time of filming, Arthur Lowe and Anne Cunningham were appearing together in Coronation Street. * Glenda Jackson appears briefly in the group singing round the piano at the Christmas party. * When Richard Harris is roughed up behind the scrum, rugby league legend Derek Turner, who was playing the character who punches him, was asked by the director to make the contact look real. So he did. He punched Harris for real and knocked him out completely, shooting for the day had to be stopped while Harris recovered.
  13. If Bunny is still around, that "pesky whabbit" should change the subject of her thread to "AnythingGoes", since it is only the creator that has those kind of powers. ..... Little Rabbit Foo Foo hopping through the forest... "Up comes the giant and bops him on the head" Hare today and Goon Tomorrow....
  14. My grandfather owned Harding Seafood in Weems Virginia when I was a child and we got all the oysters and blue crabs that we could eat for free. I sure do miss those days because now you can't buy good oysters and blue crabs anymore because the Chesapeake Bay is in bad shape. Clams are hard to find now also, I could buy those at the A&P for 25 cents each until they went out of business about ten years ago. I sure do miss my seafood.
  15. The Snake Pit is my favorite film by OLIVIA DE HAVILLAND. There are so many hilarious one liners in it that crack me up every time I watch it. Celeste Holm is so stunningly beautiful in this film, and all of the co-stars, Glenn Langan, Betsy Blair, Beulah Bondi, Natalie Schaefer, Ruth Donnelly and Jacqueline DeWitt give such a strong performance.
  16. Every week there is Friday Night Imports at 2:00am EST. This week Germania Anno Zero (1947) is showing and nest week Wings of Desire (1987) will repaly because last time TCM got a P/S version.
  17. I check in to "A Great Movie Alert" about twice a week to make sure I'm not forgetting any film that I want to see that I may have overlooked. It's easy to find because you never have to go any further than page 2 and it will be there. Some films I am looking forward to that are coming up this weekend are: The Swan (1956) with Grace Kelly and Alec Guinness, The Mask of Dimitrios (1944) with Sydney Greenstreet and Peter Lorre, and one that I missed last month, the Robert Altman film Nashville (1975).
  18. The Film Library that TCM draws from contains MGM films from the 1960's including the MGM British Studio Division. Since they own or have access to these films it makes since that they will use them from time to time as they have always done.
  19. As long as drinks aren't served on the house, cause if they are, I got dibs on hugging the chimney.
  20. All of the Harman-Ising's animations are great, so colorful and well done. The early black and white cartoons are nice also. I would be in doggy heaven if I could go through all the ones in TCM's possession and pick through them.
  21. I have my second rough draft finished for my weekly schedule after giving up on my first draft because my theme required to many film leases. So that theme only gets one prime time showing while my new theme gets the main feature treatment. I will have all totaled one main and three sub-themes. And yes I loose some films as a result but TCMProgrammer knows all about that I'm sure. I will put the polish treatment on my schedule this weekend and hopefully post it then. Everyone's Weekly Schedule is so professionally done and top notch, gives the rest of us a challenge indeed.
  22. I enjoy watching Betty Grable films more than I do Rita Hayworth ones. I guess it is because Betty portrays a personification I like more so than Rita.

A Jewish boy separated from his family in the early days of WWII poses as a German orphan and is taken into the heart of the Nazi world as a 'war hero' and eventually becomes a Hitler Youth. Although improbabilities and happenstance are cornerstones of the film, it is based upon a true story. Trivia for Europa Europa (1990) * The film met with a lukewarm reception in its native Germany, with the local media being less than complementary about it. The German Oscar selection committee did not even include it as a submission for that year's Best Foreign Language Film Oscar. Much embarrassment ensued when it went on to become one of the most successful German films ever released in the US, winning a Golden Globe and an Oscar nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay.
