  1. The Short features on TCM have gotten far and few in-between lately. There was a time when you could count on a short if there was a 10 to 15 minute space but now it is filled with promotions for DVD sales. I use to check in to see if there was going to be a short even if I wasn't going to watch the movie, but after so many no shows I gave up on it.
  2. Arkins version of The Pink Panther was a good film, he took the character in a different direction then Sellars and it was made when Sellars was considered box office poison for the US market. This new version on the other hand is just a clone that is only a cheap pale shadow of the original adding nothing new or interesting to the film.
  3. The Bravo Channel along with the Sci-Fi Channel changed at the same time when NBC Universal took them over and now are not worth watching. Also The Romance Channel became WE and now is gone without fanfare. MoviePlex was a commercial free basic cable channel of the 80's and early 90's that is also gone. A&E use to produce British dramas in partnership with Granada and Channel 4 that equaled PBS, now it's Reality TV, while The Biography Channel only has repeats of what A&E did in the 90's. Cable was better when there was only 30 channels and the monthly bill was only $12.00 a month.
  4. I recorded Junior Miss off of Cinemax about 15 years ago and it is a 20th Century Fox Film. E-mail FMC and sugest it, it has worked for me on some films. I have even asked them to show a film in Letterbox after it has shown in pan and scan and they did it about a month or two later so try it. Fox Movie Channel has made some nice changes and has become one of the best channels on DirecTV.
  5. When someone is on their death bed dying, during those last 5 hours they speak the same phrases over and over again. It is usually something from their past that stays in their mind, so maybe it is just implicitly implied that he would have said Rosebud more than once and the nurse would have been the one most likly to have heard him say it.
  6. Pom Poko (1994) A group of magic raccoons use their shape shifting powers to save their forest home. Voices of Jonathan Taylor Thomas, Clancy Brown, J.K. Simmons. D: Isao Takahata. 119m. LBX
  7. From what I have been reading, cable companies have agreed to start an ala carte for Family Programming within the next few years because of all the heat they have been getting about content. The cost of this package will be much higher than what they offer now.
  8. .........and you can't mention the Three Stooges without also including The Little Rascals or Our Gang. They use to show up on my local PBS station and also on TNT in the mid-80's. I put two of their new 2005 DVD releases in my Queue to try them out. People say that they are in good condition giving them a 4 star rating on quality. I'll let you know if it is true when I get them.
  9. In Virginia it's the Republican General Assembly Matt, Comcast gave them lots of money to keep and slow down Verizon from getting in to give us more choices. I read in the Business Section of my local newspaper that after moderate Dems and Pubs joined together to give Verizon a foot hold, Comcast caved in and now slowly we will have Verizon providing service in some locals.
  10. Netflix will throttle you if you mail your DVD's back too soon. They only want you to have three out each week and I was doing four a week by getting one mailed back the next day. They started mailing them to me from the California Distribution site instead of my local Richmond VA. site to slow me down. Then I read on a Netflix vs Blockbuster forum that you have to cancel your membership with Netflix so that your history gets erased. Then you can go back to them under a new account and things will be fine for about three months, but soon they will throttle you again. I'm with Blockbuster now with a changing of my name and a different e-mail address (I'm back to four a week). I'll do the same when I go back to Netflix and cancil Blockbuster.
  11. I have the Sony RDR-XG300 DVD Recorder that I purchased about 8 months ago and I never record any thing longer that the LP-Mode which is 3 hours. I can record all channels off of DirectTV including Pay per-view with it. I have herd rumers that some new recorders reconize flags that prevent the recording of some channels, is this true? As far as disc format go I can only use a 1X - 8X DVD +/- R/RW disc. I use Sony, TDK, Verbatim, Fuji and Philps ( which ever is on sale for $14.99 per 50 count when I need to restock). And Now here is my rant that everyone does.......... There are two technologies that have emerged that are competing with each other for your dollars. One is the technology of freedom and the other is the technology of control. Your satellite and cable providers are the technologies of control along with Time Warner, Viacom and Fox News Corp. The other is companies like Netflix, Blockbuster online and other companies that provide online movie downloads. Once the television gets connected to the computer all technologies of control will lose out. Why should some programmer working for some corporation decide what you want to watch? It may take five more years for this revolution to impact on the control side, but they will notice that they do have competition and they will react. How many of you send $20.00 to $40.00 to Netflix instead of sending it to your provider for Pay-Per-View or the ordering of Premium Movie channels? How many of you use DVD recorders that have their own TV-Guide software so that you do not have to send a $5.00 a month fee to them for using a DVR device? You are using new technologies that take away dollars from the control side and giving it to the freedom side. In short, you may think that you have no control of what shows up on your screen, that you are at the whim of some corporation that decides what you want to see, but maybe you are smarter than what you think. Maybe the choices that you are making today has someone worried, someone rethinking their survival.
  12. What are your thoughts on the new line of DVD recorders that Panasonic will be releasing in April - 2006? I think they are a nice improvement. http://gadgets.fosfor.se/panasonic-diga-dvd-line/
  13. Totoro is my favorite too, and it's a shame that animations done in the USA no longer have the spark, excitement and craftsmanship that these have (All done by hand by one Master Artist).
  14. Sorry to confuse you, Aqua is just the GUI interface name for OSX. I'll try to help you in any way I can getting around in OSX (Aqua). While in OSX,if you click on and open open your Macintosh HD, there is a folder there for OS9.2. Open that folder and open the Application folder. Then open the folder for your software (say Word for MacOffice97) and drag the Icon for Word software (W) down and place it in the Dock, (that is the bar at the bottom) then you can click it and it will start up classic mode. What I was trying to say but did a poor job of saying it is that when you open MacOffice97 or something like it in OSX, classic mode will open, load and start up on top of OSX as software. So in short, you do not need to be in OS 9.2 to use your software, OSX knows that you are opening something that requires classic mode and will start it up and load it for you. To go between the two just click on the Aqua (OSX) Desktop and classic becames hidden. I know it is hard to learn a new OS but just play with it and you will catch on. Allie
  15. Hi Nav1, I'm just a TCM fan like yourself. I have worked on Apple computers and know mostly about OSX. OS 9.2 or Classic Mode has been dropped by apple for some years, put you can run classic mode from Aqua for any old software that you use and use OSX (Aqua) for internet use. If you don't then you will have trouble with any site using Flash. Firefox for OSX works good and you can add extensions to it like Flash. If you know how to use Windows XP you won't have any trouble getting around with Aqua, they are similar in how they behave. In closing if you boot up in Aqua, then click on some of your old software classic mode will start-up and run in a separate window. Aqua treats classic mode as software and not as an OS. Sorry if this doesn't help you and you just want to stay with OS 9.2, it's just that Aqua works better with Apple Computers just like XP works better with Windows Computers.
  16. You don't need Windows Media Player with OSX, you can trash that too. Go to the apple logo at the top all the way to the left and click on software updates to see what updates apple says you need and check the ones that have to do with Java, Safari and any updates to OSX like 10.9 is the current one . Uncheck any updates that you may not need like Ipod or IPhoto and so forth.

  19. Some of these newbies make Leo look like a saint. They have posted 100 derogatory comments in one week. Joe Blow 170 posts.
  20. My Neighbor Totoro is the one that I liked the best. I loved the youngest girls character and thought that she was the one that stood out the most. I stopped recording the dubbed versions after the first week, learning that the original versions didn't use any change of language to suite american tastes. It's like the Bible, why use the English version when the Hebrew version remains true to the original intent. I agree, TCM you have provided a great service by introducing american audiences to this art form and keep up the good work. Thank you. And Sam you put into words what I could never do, you do have a wonderful gift.
  21. I have enjoyed most of the animations shown especially last weeks My Neighbor Totoro which is now included as one of my favorite films. Many closed minded people have come on board lately whose only intent is to trash others and this in unfortunate. I realize that the times that we live in can be hard on us but this is no reason to take out our personal problems on others who deserve as much respect as we would treat those who we come into contact with in ouy daily lives. When I hear people say things like anime crap and modern films suck and don't belong on TCM, I now that it is only a personal problem that they have with themselves, they only want to have someone to pick an argument with so they choose their words well to meet this end.
  22. When Michael Angelo?s frescos in the Sixteenth Chapel where restored people complained that they looked like comic strip paintings, they had gotten use to the dark dingy look of years of pollution. The relief's in the Pantheon were painted in bright colors; we are so use now to seeing them bleached white. The Sphinxes was painted in bright colors to bring it to life and make it stand out. When archeologist restore ancient frescos they plaster in the missing pieces with white plaster, painting diagonal strips to show this area was restored. So the same type of restoration is done with films, which is done with these other examples. They can never be brought back to their original glory, we can tie the pieces together though so that future generations will know that this work is incomplete, here is the closest example of what was intended. Restoration is an honest attempt to depict works of art as they were made and viewed originally.
  23. Mongo, I thought the same thing. I was expecting some interesting trivia about Edgar Casey, Nostradamus or the Inca Indians mythology about the end of times. I was a little disappointed to find out it was just a trashing of some particular genera of films.
  24. I rented this from Netflix and copied it to VHS, Spartacus is one of my favorites and I just had to have it. The commentary about getting to this film just in time before it was lost and how films of this type deteriorate faster than others was a interesting note, as was the use of black listed artists.
