Thanks for the heads up on this great movie, I can't wait to record it and add it to my DVD collection. Sundance is such a great channel. Showtime really keeps it stocked with great movies. Did you see "The Eye"? That is a really bizarre and scary movie.
-
Well I hope you are not living in the past because they used to lynch black people in the 1930's, 40's and 50's, just because they made direct eye contact. There have been actors like Anthony Hopkins, Ian Richerdson, John Malovick, Andie MacDowell, Peter Ustenov,Roy Sheider, Michael Cain, Julie Harris, Claire Bloom,Bridget Fonda,Susannah York, Daniel Day-Lewis, Alan Bates, Jill Clayburgh, Holly Hunter, MAX VON SYDOW, LIV ULLMANN, Al Pacino. Jack Lemmon, Alan Arkin, Venessa Redgrave, Robert De Niro, Diane Keaton, Steve Martin, just to name a few that are equal or exceed any one actor from the so called classic error.

I record each one that comes on so that I can fill out my DVD disks befor I finalize them, they are GREAT! More cartoons please TCM we love them.

Is sex scenes and nudity necessary in movies?
nsallieharding replied to classicerafan's topic in General Discussions
I like debates also, I just think that how they go into extremes with their arguments is humorous. Using the sleaziest examples to try to make a point, like Springer and Stern for example. This is done just to ignore and dismiss legitimate examples of nudity in film. Nudity is necessary when it comes to films that where made during the realism and post realism period. Ingmar Bergman for example used nudity in his films of the 1960's and 70's because he wanted realism in his films. A wife would not ge out of bed and hide her breasts from her husband, that would be absurd. When we watch a movie like his we are looking into a window at the characters and experiencing what they experience. I believe that it would help if people would rent these kind of movies from Netflex with the commentary turned on so that they can become more educated about such things. Besides when a movie or program says that it is intended for mature audiences it mean maturity of mind as well as age. You have to always look out for and be weary of the "JAZZ POLICE" because they will come with smiley faces on their shirts when they come to kick your door in because you don't conform. -

You have to remember that whenever threads like this pop up that these kind of treads are your 87 year old grandma talking and not take these comments to serious. After all they complained about A Fish Called Wanda for pete sakes. I just laugh at and enjoy their silly remarks and move on. -
Hollywood lost it's magic especially with actresses!
nsallieharding replied to classicerafan's topic in General Discussions
Classicerafan said that magic word,"in my opinion" which means it has nothing to do with fact, it is just a statement reflecting how classicerafan feels and believes about that particular subject. It is the opinion of 25% of the people of the USA that the Earth is the center of the universe and that the sun evolves around the Earth. The rest of us can laugh about their opinion knowing that Copernicus and Galileo proved this notion false. People are no different now, beauty wise, than they were 1000 years ago. As far as intelligence goes, well that would be just my opinion. -
What Star would you like to see a month devoted to?
nsallieharding replied to a topic in Your Favorites
I would love to see a month devoted to Max von Sydow and or Liv Ullmann (They were in many films together). Ingmar Bergman utilized both of their talents on many of his films. Two of their films I really like are "The Immigrants" and "The New Land" (both out of print). Julie Christie is another actress that would be a great choice. -

I have enjoyed all of the Michael Powell movies and I also went on Nexflex to order any of his movies that are not being aired this month, he is fresh and new to me, so I have discovered a new director that I include in my favorites list. -

This will be the best place for me to put my last post in to this site that I am going to make. Who is Your Hero? Mine is Bob Dylan, Janis, The Moody Blues, The Beatles, Billy Wilder, Woody Allen, Frank Capra,Art Carney, Thorton Wilder,Henry David Thoreau. Though I do not believe that a plant will spring up where no seed has been, I have great faith is a seed, convince me that you have a seed there, and I am prepared to expect wonders. If not than I will leave you to your internal dialogue, fancies and stipulations. -
This is an example of "Group Think" folks, Japs, ****, Poulocks, it's all Artchy Bonker to me. They don't mean any harm but it is still code words that slip out that explain a lot about what they were taught as a child. I have relatives who came and visited me from Arkansas and they still use the "N" word! Freudian slips that tell alot about what a person is really thinking. I took them to visit Washington D.C. and they said, I don't see why the **** have the right to live here and have it to themselves, we should take out the Confederate flag and put it on our antenna and show them who is boss, 4 more years George W Bush! I told the, if you do, I will burn it! So no they don't mean any harm and they don't know who they are hurting, but they live in a world of "Group Think". You were right to point out the **** thing, I'm with You.

This question may tell something about rather a person is from a Red State or a Blue State kind of thing. If you are a Social Conservative from the bible belt or a Libertarian on the East or West coast. I agree with Bill Maher 100% about all these issues, what a great guy! You can have that mercury drilled out of your teeth that they put there when you were a child, once you become an adult. And you can have those ideas and prejudges that were drilled into your head when you were a child removed also. In business its called "Group Think". That is where you have a group of people who think the same making decisions and being in charge. When deciding what ideas and what kind of people are the right kind of people, they always agree with each other. In the 40's and 50's they were against the Blacks getting ahead and being their equal. In the 60's and 70's they were against women breaking through the glass ceiling and holding positions that were once thought only for white males. And now they need someone else to look down on. We continue to grow as a society, what was once excepted as the norm is now unacceptable. In business when we make these mistakes we alienate potential customers, and we don't stay in business very long. Just think of the consequences when we make them in society.

All Fans of Sunset Boulevard Give Your Opinion of This
nsallieharding replied to bhryun's topic in General Discussions
First off, Billy Wilder is one of my favorite directors so I had to give this question some thought. I didn't want to give the no answer so fast, which would be easy to do. Wilder was an expert and knew who would work in the roles that he needed placing. In 1950 Montgomery Clift would have been a first on a list of possibilities for this role and he would have carried it off with perfection. One of the most important things an actor has to learn is what to take and what to turn down. This may be another of those circumstances where an actor makes a mistake on what he turns down. Bad for Clift and good for William Holden, and the rest is history. Getting mixed up with you know who really hurt Clift and maybe his path would have taken a different turn if he had done this movie. So, yes Sunset Boulevard would still have been a great movie with Clift, but it is always nice when unknowns are given a chance to make their careers by seeing what they can do with a great script and running with it. -
Alaster Sim was also great in "The Ruling Class (1972) 154 Minutes. Cast: Peter O'Toole, Alastair Sim, Arthur Lowe. Directed by Peter Medak. This movie was meant to be released through United Artist, but they wanted to cut it down to 2 hours so the directer bought them out and released it through AVEC. O'Tool is the heir to the title of 14th earl of Gurney but his relatives are a bit concerned about his behavior. Seems that he believes that he is Jesus Christ! So in order to protect the family name, they plan on arranging for him to sire an heir, then lock him up in a sanitarium. You can rent this movie from Nexflex or Blockbuster online. It is a great movie.

The Alec Guinness movies were great, Hotel Paradiso (1966), Scapegoat(1959) and All at Sea (1958)are movies that I have never seen before. Sophia Loren, Christopher Plummer, Alec Guinness. D: Anthony Mann. C 183m. LBX 28 Sunday Sunset Boulevard (1950) A failed screenwriter falls into a mercenary romance with a faded silent-film star. Upset with Summer Under the Stars selection
nsallieharding replied to msladysoul's topic in General Discussions
Summer Under the Stars is a little boring and repetitious, everyone knows it. There are about 5 movies that are being aired which are unique for the whole month, the rest are shown so many times that there is no reason to tune in (like my Mom says I'm not going to waste electricity on that). That being said, I really don't mind because there are other options out there and no channel is great all the time, we shouldn't feel like we need to be loyal to any one channel or option, rent DVDs, pick up a premium channel, or just turn the old tube off. In short, it is ok to say that TCM is pretty boring this month and I'll just watch something else. -

It is an interesting note that Blockbuster lost so much money this last quarter and they blame it on a lack luster crop of Hollywood movies. As a result the bottom fell out of their stock, but after visiting one of their stores I can see why they are loosing money, a half dozen movies filled their walls and all movies that I would not even want to see on HBO or Showtime! I get a little amused how people always dwell on Hollywood when the best movies are made in Canada, New Zealand, Australia, and the UK. If it doesn't say BBC Films at the opening credits, and Sony Classics at the end, I know it is a bad movies.

Wilde (1997) IFC - Aug 08 01:45am Movies, 120 Mins. *** (Rated R)(Enhanced Wide-Screen) Playwright Oscar Wilde espouses personal style, breaks conventions and attacks Victorian repression. Adult Situations; Language; Nudity. Cast: Stephen Fry, Jude Law, Vanessa Redgrave, Jennifer Ehle, Gemma Jones, Judy Parfitt, Michael Sheen, Zoe Wanamaker, Tom Wilkinson. Director(s): Brian Gilbert. Producer(s): Michiyo Yoshizaki, Michael Viner, Deborah Raffin, Alan Howden, Alex Graham, Marc Samuelson, Peter Samuelson. Based on the best-selling biography by Richard Ellman, this unconventional biopic traces the brilliant, witty, and tragic life of Oscar Wilde from his rise to fame as a much-in-demand author and public speaker to his downfall and ultimate imprisonment for homosexuality. Irish-born and homosexual, Wilde (Stephen Fry, in a critically lauded performance) nevertheless takes a loving wife (Jennifer Ehle), with whom he has children. While married, he becomes aware of his true sexual identity after a chance encounter with an aggressive house guest. This leads to a very public affair with vain, rebellious young Lord Alfred Douglas (Jude Law), the son of the Marquess of Queensbury (Tom Wilkinson, IN THE BEDROOM). Despite an astoundingly successful writing career, Wilde's private life lands him in prison for "gross indecency," a synonym for homosexual behavior, which was illegal in England at the time.

This reminds me of the story, "The Monkeys Paw". I wouldn't invite or wish anyone dead to show up at my door because they would stink the house up and they wouldn't want to be brought back anyway so they would be very upset! My second wish would be to wish them away. I would only have one wish left and it would be to have every movie made that is lost delivered to me on a regular bases by snail mail.

The Wide Screen version of "Hello Dolly" aired on FMC a couple of weeks ago. They also aired the pan and scan version a week after, but I didn't waste time on that one. I guess that the nice thing about Directv is that it is easy to go online and change your programming choices, I do it alot, when I see something good on Shotime Unlimited or the HBO channels I pick them up or change one for the other and still keep the same monthly pricing. The weak thing about them is that they are limited on their premium channels (no HBO Comedy, Showtime Beyond). What did you have before, Dish Network or cable?

Movies That People Tell Me I'm Supposed to Like....
nsallieharding replied to bhryun's topic in Your Favorites
This is the age old story, the critics just raved about this movie but everyone else asked for their money back as they walked out of the theatre. I just think that when films try to be so didactic they become a bore and impossible to watch. -
The 47 Ronin, Part I (1941)will be airing on IFC this saturday so don't miss it, it will be your only chance to see it. It will not be airing anywhere else for sure, and you won't find it at any DVD rental. Japanese Lord Asano's 47 loyal samurai seek revenge for his forced ritual suicide, in the first of two parts. Cast: Chojuro Kawarasaki, Yoshizaburo Arashi, Mantoyo Mimasu. Director: Kenji Mizoguchi.
