  1. Another one I remember is "The Plane that Dissapeared". Every Saturaday night at midnight a sci-fi/horror show came on in my area called Hazel the Witch, this was in the late 1960's. TCM only airs the well known films which are not my favorites. I like the B-movie sci-fi films better. So maybe TCM should have the worst sci-fi films ever because they would be the best.

  2. The old AMC use to show all of these movies. I have Tarantula and Attack of the 50 ft.Women to name a few, recorded on VHS Tape from those great old days when they where the best channel on TV. I pull them out every Halloween and watch them because good sci-fi movies like these don't air anymore. I'm just sorry that I recorded them in EP mode, if I could go back and do it again I would have done them in SP mode.

  3. This movie aired 10/12 on MoreMax and airs many more times on ThrillerMax if you are able to get that channel from your profider. This film is way over due for a DVD release, I agree with you on that. Because it was filmed in (Techniscope) may be the reason they are holding back.

Many of the scenes of the Martian surface were filmed at Zabriskie Point in Death Valley, California. The Martian spacecraft are left-overs from The War of the Worlds (1953). Director Byron Haskin was involved in both projects, although George Pal is often given sole credit for the earlier classic.

While filming in Death Valley, the cast and crew were ordered not to touch any of the plant life due to the fact that they were filming in a national park area and most of the plant life was federally protected.

  4. This Billy Wilder film is released through Universal Studios and Showtime, The Movie Channel, Flix and Sundance have leasing rights for most of the Universal Studios films. This means that TCM is not able get this movie anymore. Starz has rights to Touchstone, HBO and Cinemax the rights to 20th Century Fox and Warner Brothers. Since Viacom and Time Warner are competitors, it's not likely that they would be willing to relinquish these leasing rights.

  5. This is one of my favorite horror movies that will be airing of Fox Movie Channel: If you have not seen it than record it.

  6. I checked on The IMDB and the Lon Channey film "The Unknown is 63 minutes long......

    Also Known As:

Alonzo the Armless (USA) (working title)

"-Runtime: 63 min (23 fps)-" / UK:49 min (BFI print) / USA:49 min (alternate version) ..... so the alternate version is the one that TCM is showing, but why aren't they showing the full version? Are there three prints to this movie? IMDB goes on to say, ......

"For many years, this film only existed in murky 9.5mm dupes on the black market. In March 1973, at a screening of this film at George Eastman House, archivist James Card said that Henri Langlois and his staff at the Cinematheque Francais discovered The Unknown in 1968 among other miscellaneous cans of film marked "l'inconnu" (films "unknown" due to missing titles, etc.)".

  8. No, this is the best print of Gigi that is available. MGM had it pulled off the self when they released their version, so we are lucky to see it as is. I'm surprised that this movie has not been a choice for a remake, it would be a great film done as a non musical as this version does.

  9. Well I hope you are not living in the past because they used to lynch black people in the 1930's, 40's and 50's, just because they made direct eye contact. There have been actors like Anthony Hopkins, Ian Richerdson, John Malovick, Andie MacDowell, Peter Ustenov,Roy Sheider, Michael Cain, Julie Harris, Claire Bloom,Bridget Fonda,Susannah York, Daniel Day-Lewis, Alan Bates, Jill Clayburgh, Holly Hunter, MAX VON SYDOW, LIV ULLMANN, Al Pacino. Jack Lemmon, Alan Arkin, Venessa Redgrave, Robert De Niro, Diane Keaton, Steve Martin, just to name a few that are equal or exceed any one actor from the so called classic error.

  10. I checked the December line-up and these are the films I saw that are not repeats and will be great to watch:

    Love and Death

    Stardust Memories

    Zelig

    Shadows and Fog

    Ocean's Eleven (1960)

    Night Ambush (M. Powell)

Goodbye, Mr. Germ (Edgar G. Ulmer)

    The Four Feathers (1939)

    Cleopatra (1912)

    Henry V (1944)

    Hamlet (1948)

    Othello (1965)

    Gigi (1948 - French version)

    Oliver Twist (1948)

To Be or Not to Be (1942 - Jack Benny)

    The China Syndrome

    Wings of Desire (1988)

    The Quatermass Xperiment (1956)

  11. I like debates also, I just think that how they go into extremes with their arguments is humorous. Using the sleaziest examples to try to make a point, like Springer and Stern for example. This is done just to ignore and dismiss legitimate examples of nudity in film.

Nudity is necessary when it comes to films that where made during the realism and post realism period. Ingmar Bergman for example used nudity in his films of the 1960's and 70's because he wanted realism in his films. A wife would not ge out of bed and hide her breasts from her husband, that would be absurd. When we watch a movie like his we are looking into a window at the characters and experiencing what they experience.

I believe that it would help if people would rent these kind of movies from Netflex with the commentary turned on so that they can become more educated about such things. Besides when a movie or program says that it is intended for mature audiences it mean maturity of mind as well as age. You have to always look out for and be weary of the "JAZZ POLICE" because they will come with smiley faces on their shirts when they come to kick your door in because you don't conform.

  12. I have a Sony dual DVD recorder and I have great luck with Sony and Philips DVD/- disks (DVDRs Finalize quicker than DVD-Rs, otherwise I don't see any other difference in their quality). They are on sale at Circuit City on a regular bases at $8.00 for 25 disks, then you can buy jewel cases to put them in.

But I have some bad news for you. In a couple of months you will not be able to record movies and programs off of television on to Tivo, DVRs, DVD recorders, or VCRs!

    Read this-----

    http://www.craphound.com/msftdrm.txt

So say goodbye to that record button.

  13. I agree with Keithfromke on the German silent films, and Netflex is the best place to get silent films. They have more than you will ever see on television. You can copy some of the DVDs to VHS if they were made prior to 2004 by plugging the A/V outs of your DVD Player/Recorder into the A/V ins (Line 1)of your VCR. I can record 85% of the DVDs sent to me from Netflex to VHS, just use the SP mode on the VCR so that the recording is as good as the DVD.

  14. Classicerafan said that magic word,"in my opinion" which means it has nothing to do with fact, it is just a statement reflecting how classicerafan feels and believes about that particular subject. It is the opinion of 25% of the people of the USA that the Earth is the center of the universe and that the sun evolves around the Earth. The rest of us can laugh about their opinion knowing that Copernicus and Galileo proved this notion false. People are no different now, beauty wise, than they were 1000 years ago. As far as intelligence goes, well that would be just my opinion.

  15. American studios have always wanted to cut movies down to under two hours because the attention span of Americans is shorter than that of the UK and Europeans by about an hour. The view of Europeans is that if a movie is only an hour and a half long instead of three hours long, than they should only pay half price to see it because they are only seeing half a movie. Americans on the other hand believe three hours is just too long to set through a movie (Just give me the details and skip the rest mentality).

I think that Welles could have fought for, and gotten two releases, one for an American release and one for the European market. The Ruling Class, directed by Peter Medak, and staring Peter O'Toole came in at 154 minutes, the studio wanted it cut down to 100 minutes, so Medak bought the studio out of the contract and released his movie through AVEC instead. There are countless examples of a director having to fight to keep his project intact.

  16. This will be the best place for me to put my last post in to this site that I am going to make. Who is Your Hero? Mine is Bob Dylan, Janis, The Moody Blues, The Beatles, Billy Wilder, Woody Allen, Frank Capra,Art Carney, Thorton Wilder,Henry David Thoreau. Though I do not believe that a plant will spring up where no seed has been, I have great faith is a seed, convince me that you have a seed there, and I am prepared to expect wonders. If not than I will leave you to your internal dialogue, fancies and stipulations.

  17. This is an example of "Group Think" folks, Japs, ****, Poulocks, it's all Artchy Bonker to me. They don't mean any harm but it is still code words that slip out that explain a lot about what they were taught as a child. I have relatives who came and visited me from Arkansas and they still use the "N" word! Freudian slips that tell alot about what a person is really thinking. I took them to visit Washington D.C. and they said, I don't see why the **** have the right to live here and have it to themselves, we should take out the Confederate flag and put it on our antenna and show them who is boss, 4 more years George W Bush! I told the, if you do, I will burn it! So no they don't mean any harm and they don't know who they are hurting, but they live in a world of "Group Think". You were right to point out the **** thing, I'm with You.

  18. This question may tell something about rather a person is from a Red State or a Blue State kind of thing. If you are a Social Conservative from the bible belt or a Libertarian on the East or West coast. I agree with Bill Maher 100% about all these issues, what a great guy! You can have that mercury drilled out of your teeth that they put there when you were a child, once you become an adult. And you can have those ideas and prejudges that were drilled into your head when you were a child removed also.

In business its called "Group Think". That is where you have a group of people who think the same making decisions and being in charge. When deciding what ideas and what kind of people are the right kind of people, they always agree with each other. In the 40's and 50's they were against the Blacks getting ahead and being their equal. In the 60's and 70's they were against women breaking through the glass ceiling and holding positions that were once thought only for white males. And now they need someone else to look down on. We continue to grow as a society, what was once excepted as the norm is now unacceptable.

In business when we make these mistakes we alienate potential customers, and we don't stay in business very long. Just think of the consequences when we make them in society.

  19. First off, Billy Wilder is one of my favorite directors so I had to give this question some thought. I didn't want to give the no answer so fast, which would be easy to do.

Wilder was an expert and knew who would work in the roles that he needed placing. In 1950 Montgomery Clift would have been a first on a list of possibilities for this role and he would have carried it off with perfection. One of the most important things an actor has to learn is what to take and what to turn down. This may be another of those circumstances where an actor makes a mistake on what he turns down. Bad for Clift and good for William Holden, and the rest is history. Getting mixed up with you know who really hurt Clift and maybe his path would have taken a different turn if he had done this movie.

So, yes Sunset Boulevard would still have been a great movie with Clift, but it is always nice when unknowns are given a chance to make their careers by seeing what they can do with a great script and running with it.

  20. Osborne made a great statement after the airing if Alfie, (paraphrasing) he said , "Why do they always take a great movie (like Alfie)and try to remake it, why can't they take a bad movie with a script that needs improving and try to make it better".

I felt sorry for Steve Martin after watching his remake of Cheaper by the Dozen on HBO.It made me feel like his career was over, that movie was so bad. Especially when I could watch the original version on FMC and compare them side by side.

I'll stay away from all of the remakes, even Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. Maybe I'll give it a chance on whatever premium movie channel it shows up on, but even then I will most likely get disgusted with it and change the channel.
