  1. People are trying to make things more complicated than they really are. The 4:3 ration of older televisions were made to match the 4:3 ratio of movie theater screens pre - 1954. The 16.9 ratio is made to match 1954 to the present. The ratio may change and vary for the films depending which camera lenses are utilized, but the ratio of the screens are either one or the other. Movie theaters in the late 50's and 60's had to make sure their screen had a ratio that could accommodate all of the variations (Panorama, Cinemascope and Panavision). So in short it is the ratio of the screen which should be considered and not the movie. You can go to google and do a search for aspect ratio and get more technical information. The top and bottom used portion of the screen basically remains the same on the screen, only the sides change.

  2. I only buy Wide Screen DVD's when the movie was released in that format. The reson I prefer the LetterBox movies is that when I replace my 27 inch TV, it's going to be a 30 to 36 inch widescreen LCD television, so I'm looking ahead when issues like this won't be a concern to me. Full screen movies will have black bars on the left and right when they are viewed on these improved televions.

  3. Friday Night Imports and Silent Sunday Nights makes TCM the best channel in my book. Thank you for these special viewing nights that I look forward to. Maybe you could have Sci-Fi Saturday Nights too, wouldn't that be the ticket. Three great evenings in a row of special events! Thank you TCMProgrammer for all the effort you put into things to keep TCM at the top.

  4. I believe that movies today rely to much on special effects, explicit violence and sex to hit the viewer over the head with. It seems as if they have to break some kind of barrier with each new release. I notice that when I subscribe to Showtime, I'm watching more of the venue on Flix and TMC (which show more movies of the 60's and 70's) then I do on Showtime, which shows mainly recent movies.

To be balanced and fair, there were alot of bad movies made in the past, and many of them show up on TCM. The studios being factories, cranked out many more movies each year than they do today. Failure at the box office didn't mean the end of a studio ("Heaven's Gate", bankrupted United Artist). That is why today they make mainly movies for the 14 to 20 crowd. They are the ones going to the theaters.

The reason that the imports are still good quality movies is that their governments subsidize the directors and producers there, so there is a cushion between them and the box office. They don't have to lower themselves, they can still make thoughtful and soulful movies that are ahead of the times. For them movie making is still an Art Form. And I can enjoy these movies by renting them from NexFlix.

  5. There is an old Taoist saying: "A man of virtue can act the fool without much difficulty, but a man without virtue knows not that he is lacking, and therefore, must suffer his fate". Just a little light hearted Chinese wisdom. I'm not going to pick on you Leo, just a little fun this Sunday morning.

  6. My personal epinion about FMC is that they show on the average about two good movies a week. For that $10.00 price tag you could get a premium channel like Showtime Unlimited and get about 10 good movies a week($12.00 a month for me on Directv).

  7. I just want to come in and state that tcmprogrammer has answered my questions in the past about movies that I was interested in and I am thankful that he has taken the time to do so. No other channel out there would do the same and I feel gratitude that there is one, namely TCM that does so.

I enjoy the movies of the 1960's and 70's also, but I will have patience in watching them show up on TCM in Letterbox format from time to time. Like someone stated earlier, there are other outlets for us out there and I can utilize them when these kind of movies show up on these channels (Flix and TMC show these movies sometimes).I will not waste time complaining when a channel plays some things I don't care to watch. Thanks TCMProgrammer for all the input you give to us.

  8. I agree 100%. I have never enjoyed TCM's line-up more than I did last night. How to Murder Your Wife is the kind of movie that TCM needs to show every night at prime time(that 1960's comedy stuff that Flix usually only shows). And He Who Gets Slapped was a great silent pick by Kenny also. If we could only look at the TCM library and choose four movies, what a candy store indeed.

  9. I know this is a late reponse to your post, but I have a copy I can record for you on DVD+/-R if you haven't found one already, but it plays alot on TCM like you say so just wait and it will show up I guess.

  10. The title of the movie is:

    "We are, Not Alone."

Directed by: Tim Burton(if he will be handy and not too busy to take on the project). It's about a warrior alien species that hasn't gotten this far by the kindness of their hearts.

Us, being a planet in turmoil, they naturally take advantage of the situation. And they being of the "Ant" category, are able to live underground long enough to establish themselves and gain strength. All the little ants are at their disposal, bedding their will.

Environmental, economic and geo-political conditions benefit the opportune occurrence of their finale invasion----- I don't want to spoil anymore of the plot until you have had a chance to review and revise script for further revisions and approval---

  11. I remember her when she made a guest appearance on the Red Skelton Show in the 60's, they worked great together doing comedy skits. I guess she was able to poke fun at all that came before and let her hair down.

  12. Mondo, yes I am aware of them and Strange Cargo and Rain is a case in point (being made in the mid-30's I believe). All I am saying is that I like the movies Betty and Joan made pre- 1940. After that their box office sales went down for a reason, they had become too repetitious in the kind of movies they made and people got tired of them. As far as Ida is concerned, I do not like her movies at all, but that is just me.

And Leo, I have DTV and My choices are limited as far as premium channels go, so I really have to search around to find great movies. I do not think things will get better, they will only get worse. That is why I rush to record the good ones when I spot them.

I'm ordering Cinamax for the end of the month to catch Clockwork Orange, Being There, Goodbye Columbus, Harold & Maude. Thats how I surf the channels, Showtime for two weeks, HBO for two weeks, Cinamax maybe for a week and still only pay $12.00 a month for them at DTV. If any of you have a better way to record the best movies please let me know?

  13. Leo, I will agree with you when it comes to romance-dramas from the 1940's and 50's. Betty Davis, Joan Crawford, Ida lupino stuff ( these are not their best movies for sure),but I just don't think that TCMProgrammer is to blame.

If you'll notice, TCM is owned by the same people that own HBO and Cinamax and these channels are shadows of what they use to be also. There has not been a good movie on these stations for five years, they have turned into networks and they have run out of ideas.

The only game in town is Showtime Unlimited with Sundance, Starz Superpak, FMC, and IFC. Starz has degraded the movies they show so things are always changing.

Where I have to differ with you is movies from 1915 to 1944. These movies I see as being the best of what Hollywood made, along with movies from 1960 to 1980. Then they get mediocre again.

  14. Yes, and the film begins in the year 2145, 80% of all land mass is uninhabitable. It has been 130 years since the great war which spread the super virus which extinguished 60% of the population. Those of us who are left are small in number and walk alone in small groups, The Lebsoniods and the Consondrons.

We now live in the only area's left which will sustain life, cemeteries of those who caused all of the planets destruction. They are remembered as the misery givers, beings who worshiped narcissism. Their gods, their language and customs all which they invented are now forgotten, only the burned out ruins of their cities remain, no one enters, because they are only reminders of disease and pestilence.

The oceans which once gave life are now empty and void, the skies dark and the air still smells of the stench of which the evil ones have left behind.

  15. The trend is that they are doing One reel Wonders, From the Fault and the Travel logs less. It may be that economic conditions make it necessary, I don't know. They may have to sell some soap, if thats the case than it's better than saying this movie is brought to you by Dell.

  16. The only question I have is what does amc stand for, it can't stand for American Movie Classics anymore right? Maybe Average Movies Channel, I don't know. I have been emailing IFC about their IFC bug and I have gotten a response! From now on the bug will be contained in the unused portion of a letterbox movie so that it does not contaminate the picture. We can make a difference people, email your frustrations about bugs to all the channels that use them please!

  17. If I could go back to the 1940's I would tell them how things are here now in the 21st century. People drive around in things called SUV's that burn up oil quicker than they can pump it out of the ground, we go to war because of it and it burns holes in the ozone layer (Co2's we call it, which is something you don't know about yet).

We now have droughts, super bad hurricanes and tornadoes caused by the imbalance of the atmosphere. We are over populated, infesting the planet, using up it's resources, and we call ourselves Neo Conservatives, people who only think about stock markets, profits and financal well being.

I don't expect you of the 1940's to help us, you have your own choices to make and we have made ours. There is one thing I would ask of you. Fossil fuel! That was more of an enemy that Hitler, we see worse leaders now here in the old USA than you are fighting in Germany. But they kill in the name of keeping oil flowing, so that American consumption can continue.

They have taken away our freedoms which you are fighting for and we now live with each day being worse than the next. So please make your choices carefully.

Your worst enemy may be yourself.

  18. I can't believe someone watches AC, I'm totally beside myself. I can't bring myself to watch them even if a good movie comes on because the amc bug is always on the screen and of course the commercials. FMC is getting a little better though, The Day the Earth Stood Still shows friday 12:00N - 2:00PM and the WideScreen version of The Innocents played last week.As far as silent movies go, I would be upset if TCM stopped showing them, FMC won't show them even though 20th Century Fox made silent movies. And Leo, there is a spell check button you can use before you post, I use it, it is a nice tool that comes in handy.

  19. My favorites are:

1: The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari (1920) directed by Robert Wiene. (German)

2: Dr. Mabuse: The Gambler (1922) Directed by Fritz Lang.

3: The Golem (1920) Directed by Paul Wegener (German)
