  1. Thanks vallo - that's kinda what I thought. Why do you think it is then that The Maltese Falcon is considered Noir? Or is it by everyone - or just some people? Isn't it pretty much the same as Angels and other gangster movies? I know there is MUCH controversy about what is and what isn't noir so I don't expect you to have a pat answer - but what is your opinion of The Maltese Falcon as noir. Thanks.
  2. I watched this delightful movie last night - and thought how aptly named it is. Highly recommended if you haven't seen it yet.
  3. I think that calling these people ugly is very much over stated and just unkind and rude. Maybe some of them are not traditionaly handsome but I haven't seen one person mentioned who was out and out ugly. That is just name-calling and not at all factual. I don't think anyone means to be unkind but calling people ugly just IS. For the record, I always thought that Pernell Roberts was handsome, not ugly, not even plain - but handsome. And Cagney - ugly? I don't know what you guys are using as a measuring standard but not everyone looks like Errol Flynn or Brad Pitt. (I know, it's a pity they don't - - but oh, well lol) Scarlett
  4. I love Marilyn, she was cute, sweet, beautiful, adorable and a good actress. Very much a star IMO. On the other hand, I can't stand Jayne Mansfield - I don't think she could act her way out of a wet paper bag. And I sure don't think she was attractive. So, she had boobs - does that a star make? I think she was quite sleazy - not classy, at all, like Marilyn was. Frankly (my dear), I don't think they should be mentioned in the same sentence. Am I opinionated about this? Yeah, I know I am. *grin*
  5. Rusty, thanks for the 'welcome back' - that is truly appreciated. :-) Actually, liking both versions is a good way to be - saves on ulcers lol. I don't like remakes as a rule, movies or songs, although music remakes are often very good and much easier to tolerate than movie remakes - but I truly dislike the version of I Will Survive they are playing on TCM this month. I don't think it helps that I love the original so much - I probably wouldn't like any remake - but this guy, I do find really obnoxious.
  6. Hi Larry! How nice of you to write, it's wonderful to hear from you. :-) I'm sure trying to get better. Yes, there is a lot of pneumonia going around Southern Alberta, I have a friend who also has had it twice. I've had it every year for the last 6 years, though - last Mar-May, I had it 3 times and was in the hospital! This year I wasn't in the hospital but was even sicker than I was last year. It does get really annoying, I wish I could find the reason why I get it so often. I'm sure going to try to strengthen my immune system and hopefully that will help. It's good to hear that you are in Ottawa - if anyone can straighten out those government knotheads in "high places", it'd be you! Good luck in achieving your goal. I'll be anxious to hear what happened.
  7. I sure wish you would explain this statement: " i never liked Clark Gable or John Barrymore. They were both dirty old men." I certainly believe that you have the right to like or dislike anyone you choose - but I have a problem with the judgment call of the above statement. Would you please explain what you mean by "dirty old men"? Thanks.
  8. Didn't you absolutely love that last line of Carrie Fisher's? Where she indirectly trashes her father. I thought that was great and laugh every time I see it. :-O Since reading Eddie Fisher's book, I think he is a pig.
  9. There are dozens of people I'd like to see - just a few would be Peter Lorre, Claude Rains, Richard Widmark, Tyrone Power - but there are many that I think would be good or even acceptable choices. What I really want to comment on is that I think the choices lately, and upcoming, have been really terrible, IMO. I hope they come up with someone deserving soon - there are so many fantastic actors that I've been really surprised at the people chosen lately. I'm not really complaining because there are lots of good movies to watch on TCM that I just ignore SOTM nights - I'm just remarking that the choices lately IMO have not been very good. I truly believe that TCM could do much better in their choices of SOTM. Regarding the wonderful Errol Flynn, he was SOTM about a year ago.
  10. Very enjoyable, factual article Neil. I've just finished reading a biography on the sisters and don't recall it mentioning that Joan suggested Olivia for the role of Melanie in GWTW, that was interesting to read. Let us know when the second half is posted, please.
  11. What an incredible teacher. :-) I used to have to sneak out. lol When I was in grade 5, I used to get caught up in "Matinee" (remember the days?) and never made it to afternoon school, I would say 80% of the time. I was lucky cuz my dad was away and my mom at work and I was home alone. They finally told my parents but by then what could they do? I had a fantastic winter and that contributed, in part, to my love of classic movies. Johnny, I remember the CBC late nites in the 80s - they had incredible movies when you couldn't see them anywhere else on Canadian TV. I loved that! I was a young mom with little kids and never missed those movies. I think that was the only time CBC was ever worth watching. Ohce, I totally agree - Cagney WAS hot! And that just contributed to the wonderful whole package! Scarlett
  12. IS this film noir? As with most people, I find it hard to describe but I usually know it when I see it. It really is my favorite genre. Once in awhile, I'm not sure - and Angels is one I'm not sure of. Is this just a gangster/crime film or is it film noir? It seems to me it's a gangster film with some noir elements. The only reason I think it might be noir is because I've seen The Maltese Falcon categorized as noir - and I feel that if it is film noir than Angels with Dirty Faces must be too. What do you think? Scarlett
  13. Man, that was a fast answer! lol Thanks TZ. I am feeling better, so far, but was at the doctor yesterday and the pneumonia is back, so God only knows what will happen in the future - more antibiotics, for sure. Of course, there is always more TCM, as well. ;-) Cake, hmmmmm - sounds like they should be chewed up and spit out. And I'm the man to do it.
  14. "slap upside the head" ................ truly Jon, that was a great come-back. Made me laugh. ;-)
  15. ...... the wonderful song I Will Survive? I don't think I have ever heard a worse version of any song ever. I love Gloria Gaynor and her version of I Will Survive was my favorite song in the 80's. I've been sick in bed for awhile with bad pneumonia, and watched a lot of TCM (the one good thing about being sick) and whenever I saw this ad, I didn't know whether or not I would survive. I hope whoever this is hasn't tortured other great old songs as well.
  16. Movielover, lots of us have been requesting that for a long time. So far - no go. It would sure be wonderful to see more of Richard Widmark, hopefully soon.
  17. Oh no! Ditto on "Rex Harrison was perfect . . . " I sure wish TCM would show this movie again!
  18. Still waiting for a response to this please. :-)
  19. Really does sound like A Summer Place. The couple would be Troy Donahue and Sandra Dee.
  20. I love George Sanders so I think a marathon would be awesome.
  21. I agree with gmabfd - my choice would be Lost Horizon, it's just been ages since I've seen it and I think it's a great movie. For a more modern movie, I really really want to see Panic in Needle Park, Al Pacino's first movie. I can't find it any place and have never seen it.
  22. TCM programmer - how incredibly nice to get an honest apology instead of a lame excuse. Thank you. I was so happy that I was watching and waiting for The Clairvoyant, since I adore Claude Rains, because I would have been heartbroken if I'd set my recorder and missed it.
  23. I'll look into that Mongo - thanks.:-)
