  1. Thanks guys - I'll have to watch some of those - yes, I think he'll be around a long time, as well. He's really awesome. Very deserving of the Academy Award. Although I don't agree with the choice for last year.

Now, you're opinions on The Aviator? I'm watching these movies too fast. LOL

  2. The Aviator with Leonardo DiCaprio. (last nite) And I loved it. Ray with Jamie Foxx. (couple of weeks ago) It was ok.

I'm sure this topic was beat to death a year ago - and is likely on another thread but it also fits here so I'm going to discuss it here. And hopefully, get some feed back. Some of you probably know where I'm going with this, already. :-)

Why does the Academy always overlook DiCaprio's talent? I think he's wonderful in everything I've seen that he's done. Admittedly, I have only started in the last year or so, watching 'modern' movies - that's why I'm behind on last year's award nominees, so I've only seen 4 of his pictures - but I think he's an "old soul". I think Leo was fantabulous in The Aviator. He beat the hell out of Jamie Foxx, IMO. Ray was an interesting movie, but no great one, IMO - Foxx was also good, but I don't see the 'greatness' in him.

Admittedly, I judge things on my opinion, the way someone makes me feel when I'm watching them and the 'enjoyment' factor - and I have no real knowledge into what the 'experts' think is great. Otherwise, I'd likely like Brando, which I don't. And Tennessee Williams, who I detest. So, I'm no expert only someone who likes movies - but I DO know what I like. I'd sure appreciate opinions/thoughts about these movies. Thanks.

  3. Thanks for the info Presteign. I likely wouldn't have bothered - but I do often like war and war-time movies IF I know they are good. I love The Mortal Storm for instance. I'll give this one a try.

Allie, I taped The Invisible Ray and am looking forward to watching it.

I really like it when people post to this thread because it gives me some good ideas and I do read it often. And I certainly read Path's weekly posts. Thanks to all.

  4. Stoney, you're doing better than me - I don't even give Brando a mediocre. And although I do like Newman and McQueen, (McQueen better than Newman), you are right again that they will/would never have the Bogie, Grant, Gable, Tracy kind of appeal and talent. JMHO.

Who I really dislike and never did "get" is McQueen's sometimes co-star and second wife, Ali McGraw. I think she was totally talent-less.

  5. Great choices so far. Mine are Norman Bates and Mrs. Danvers, for the scary kind of villian.

Stoney, I knew exactly who you meant, but didn't know their names either. Really laughed at your "playing stupid" comment cuz that's so unlike you. Me, maybe but not you. hehe

I'm going to go with someone who isn't typically spooky like Norman Bates - I've always loved John Dahl and Farley Granger in Rope and trying to get a 'fix' on how their minds worked, especially Dahl. I don't know why I simply love that movie but it's one of my favorite Hitchcock films.

  6. Neville Brand - funny he would be brought up. I just watched D.O.A. - one of my favorites - and thought he was one of the homliest men I have ever seen. I didn't know him - still don't know much - but made sure I looked up his name at the end because I thought he was so pitifully homely. Grant it, looks aren't everything but that guy had a face that only a mother could love. What was he like in other movies? Was it just D.O.A. that he was so gruesome? I don't like talking negative about someone's looks but in this case, I just gotta ask.

  7. This has been asked before - and I don't think anyone answered it. My only thought is that if it was ME, I'd have been informed. If it's not me - who cares. LOL I don't know where the actual winner is posted though - but think it would be a good idea if they would post the name unless the person requests that it not be posted. Programmer, would you pass that on to whoever needs to hear it? Thanks.

  8. Boy - I'll bet that heading makes people sit up and take notice! I know it sure did me. LOL After reading it, I understand what you mean. Ann-Margret makes me sick too. It's almost a sin that one person should have 'everything'. But - I love her. :-)

  9. Allie - that is great news. I'll be watching for those. I just posted on another thread that Fox hasn't been playing a lot of Widmark - and they hadn't been, so it's good to hear. I'll be watching, for sure. BUT - they still aren't showing Kiss of Death - and I am waiting very impatiently for them to. Like movielover, that is one of my favorite movies and Tommy Udo is one of my all time favorite roles. Sure wish they would get with it!

  10. "blank DVDs that the available fill time time can actually be more than what is generally advertised by the DVD maker"

Memorex is really good at this. Usually I can get 10-15 minutes more than stated.

I always look up the actual time of a movie in the TCM movie database - I've been caught short too many times. Sometimes they list more than one length, due to different releases, I always go by the longest time. If there is not going to be an introduction, I add 5 minutes, just because. If there is going to be an introduction, I add 10 minutes. The only time that this has failed me is when TCM has actually screwed up on their ending/beginning times. For example, sometimes the previous movie will run extra long, so the movie I want starts 15 minutes late, that can throw everything off. And TCM, although not often, occasionally makes these errors. I lost a Bette Davis movie like that, last year. Like I said, though, it doesn't happen often. Other than that, this system has always left me enough time and I've never had a movie cut short.

  11. Stoney - he was AMAZING! I don't watch a lot of modern day movies so I'd never seen him before - what an introduction! He deserved every award he got - and then some, IMO. What else has he been in that you recommend?
