"Well cherie, your luck's about to change..."
katyscar11ett replied to Rios's topic in Information, Please!
I've watched this movie a dozen times since discovering it a couple of weeks ago. DQ is sooooooooooooo sexy! -
LOL Well, it wasn't the 'short' that got to me - I think Rains is very handsome. Although, I will admit that I've always prefered short men. Men who have a complex about being short have always amazed me cuz I prefer them that way. Dynamite comes in small packages, as they say. That IS funny that I found your own question. But, she did have a good answer, I think. I sure hope it isn't a rumor that Rains daughter is writing his biography. I've wanted to find out more about him for years!

Thanks Larry - on my way to read the latest great stories. Have a wonderful New Year!
-
I, too, adore Errol and almost anything he was in. One of my favorites - I really love bio-pics but also think this was such a fun movie - is Gentleman Jim. They have played the ones already mentioned this year but one they haven't played that I sure wish they would is The Sea Hawk.
-
No, I didn't know that - but I really enjoy trivial like that thanks for sharing. I like all 3 actresses but I'm glad things went as they did. However, I can see both actresses in the Now, Voyageur role and can't for a minute see Crawford in From Here to Eternity. Whatcha all think? The role I wish would have been cast differently is Wuthering Heights. Laurence Olivier wanted Vivian Leigh to play Cathy, and as much as I like Oberon and DO think she did great in the role, I think Vivian would have been even better.

I'm beginning to see how to stay outta trouble on this list - *grin* - keep your mouth shut! I disagree with so much that's been said here, that that is the best thing to do - but since when did I ever listen to my own advice. Meryl Streep, IMO, would never have made it 'back then' - and I never did understand how she made it 'now'. I think she's a terrible actress - and 'sexy' - NOT! Also IMO, Ty and Bette would definitely have made it today. Talent like that is too rare. I also believe that Tony Curtis would have made it, I totally disagree that he is too handsome - there are lots of modern day actors that ONLY made it because they are good looking, they can't act their way out of a wet paper bag. Tom Cruise comes to mind. Tony is also a good actor so I think he'd have definitely made it. I also think Al Pacino would have been in there. However, my latest heartthrob, Dennis Quaid, I'm afraid as sexy as I think he is, would never have made it. There is much more I could say - and won't. Thanks for listening. :-)

Great news! It will be so much fun to see Mr. Moto again, I haven't seen those for 30 years. I'm not really up on Charlie Chan but they sound like fun, as well.

Just to be different, I'll name someone more modern that I like - Brian Dennehy. -
Movies That People Tell Me I'm Supposed to Like....
katyscar11ett replied to bhryun's topic in Your Favorites
I wasted 2 hours of my life that I'll never get back by watching Lost in Translation before Christmas. Someone told me that Bill Murray won an award for this movie, so I kept thinking that it had to get better - it never did. -
Thanks Mongo - I didn't really think Marie Hemingway was related to Ernest Hemingway, but you never know. It would have been interesting if she had been. Yes, I noticed that Marie was married to Claude Rains for less than a year - I'd sure like to know the story behind that one. ^^ Do you know anything about the book that Claude Rain's daughter is supposedly writing about him?
-
Yes, that was great, I agree. I have all these films but they are all worthy of watching and re-watching. That is why I don't complain about great movies being replayed, unless it gets ridiculous.
-
Ang, I imagine I'd get sick of anyone after watching all those movies so it's understandable you'd never want to see another DQ movie. *grin* I'm watching all I can get my hands on - but have yet to find anything to rival The Big Easy - but I'm still looking. I can't believe I'm actually going to watch Great Balls of Fire, because I can't stand Jerry Lee Lewis - but whatever works. ^^ Robert Redford is very handsome IMO.

Can someone please pull Larry's thread up for me. I'm so far behind in reading - and can't remember the title of it. There has been so much activity lately that I've gone back, way back, and still can't find it. Thanks.
-
Truly! I certainly add my thanks for all the wonderful work you put into this thread Mongo. I'm so much more informed thanks to you. Happy holidays. Now - for the question, hehe. While looking up some info on Claude Rains, and looking at the list of his wives. Yes, list - but I've read that he remained friends with most, if not all, of them even after they divorced. What a man! Anyway, I noticed one of their names was Marie Hemingway but couldn't find out anything about her. I'm curious if she was any relation to Ernest. Can you find that out? Thanks bunches.

katyscar11ett replied to Rios's topic in Information, Please!
Absolutely! This scene is about 20 minutes into the movie, right before Quaid is 'set up' and goes to court. After that happens Barkin is majorly disillusioned with Quaid for quite awhile. I sure don't know about HBO but I can't imagine why anyone would cut that scene, it has been noted in 'whatever' pole to be one of the 10 sexiest scenes ever, with which I totally concur. If you want to see it again, they are periodically showing it on an Encore channel, which is where I recorded my copy. Hope this helps. -
Upon reading this, I did a lot of research, because I adore Claude Rains, but could find no definitive answer. I'm going to quote a researched response from another site and hope I don't break an internet rule in doing so. "When Claude was a youngster he sang in the Palm Street Church choir. That makes me believe he was a Christian. However, he played Jewish characters in various roles, notably Jewish patriot Haym Salomon in Sons Of Liberty. In John Soister's book on Claude Rains, Jessica Rains told the author "that her father would occasionally wonder whether he did, in fact, have some Jewish blood...". But obviously he wasn't raised in the Jewish faith." Leonard Maltin said this about Rains "short and not particulary handsome". According to who, I wonder. Seems to me Maltin doesn't know too much about "handsome". JMHO.

Do you have your computer 'remember' your information so it automatically logs on? That's what I do and have never had any problems with logging in. I agree that would be really aggravating - hope you get it working for you.

Chillibug, I DO know what you mean about your mom - and I'm so glad things have changed in the world. Although it was embarrasing for me to even know my mom HAD a sex life, my daughter and I actually discuss sex. Thank God the world has opened up to the naturalness of sex. My sister was so in love/lust with Patrick Swayze that she watched Dirty Dancing over a hundred times - I've got to say that as much as I love and adore many actors (classic and modern), I've never been "in lust" with an actor before - but I think I'll be watching The Big Easy as many times as she watched Dirty Dancing (which I also enjoy). And I've already reserved 10 (our limit) Dennis Quaid movies from the library just as a beginning. I so hope he's as hot in other movies. Meg Ryan was so lucky. lol I more or less posted this message to see if anyone agreed with me or if Quaid's sexiness was just a "me" thing. I'm so glad to hear it isn't. If I ever get past that, maybe I'll decide if I think he's a good actor or not. hehehe Although I really LOVE the Big Easy. It's my new 'modern' day favorite movie. Even without the 'sexy' scene. I am just beginning to realize what a "snob" I've been about movies. If something was made after 1959, with few exceptions, it wasn't good enough for me. And my opinion hasn't changed regarding movies made in the 60s and the 70s - I think most of them are a waste of life. But I'm beginning to believe that movies have really improved beginning in the 80s - never as much as classics and WAY too much swearing and nudity - but still a major improvement from the earlier 2 decades. Soooo - I've missed much. When I asked my sister about Quaid, she asked me if I'd been hiding under a rock. lol And I guess in my being so opinionated about watching modern day movies, I had been. Thanks for answering my post.

I really missed Miracle on 34th Street, as well. I did record The Bishop's Wife off an Encore channel so didn't miss it. I enjoyed A Christmas Carol, but really wish TCM could obtain the Alastair Sim version some Christmas. I think they did fairly well with their assortment of Christmas movies but what has always choked me is that they leave a lot of their schedules the same as the previous year's schedule. I've noticed that heavily in January. It would be nice if some thought - and our suggestions - went into the planning. Although, I gotta tell you, I hate to criticize TCM.

'Tis Jude Law. I enjoyed Cold Mountain too - especially Jude Law -but don't find him sexy. Not that I'm challenging your opinion. I have quite different tastes in men I find are sexy. I'm still waiting for someone to comment on my Dennis Quaid post. hehe I don't often find extremely handsome men 'sexy' - what makes a man sexy to me is his individuality - his uniqueness, as it were. Exceptions to this are Errol Flynn and Tyrone Power. And modern day, Brat Pitt, although I know a lot of people here dislike him. But men I find sexy are people like James Cagney, a young Orson Welles, And - Dennis Quaid. And - just to blow your mind, I find Mike Myers - the person, not the characters, very sexy. Too weird? hehe Maybe, but that's my taste. Runs in the family, too, because my daughter is attracted to Jim Carrey - and Edward G. Robinson. Although she also finds Cary Grant very attractive (as we all do, I'm sure) but it's the 'complete' Grant, not just the gorgeous outside.

Why Is Montgomery Clift Underappreciated?
katyscar11ett replied to JaguarJack's topic in Your Favorites
I don't know if I think he's underappreciated or not, but I've always thought he was a much better actor than Marlon Brando, James Dean, Liz Taylor, Frank Sinatra and Charleton Heston - as well as many others from that time era that haven't been mentioned - but upon thinking about it, they really aren't even deserving of mention. I really love Monty. -
One of the sexiest roles I've ever seen is Dennis Quaid's role in The Big Easy - he is dynamite! Which kinda goes against the initial question of why today's stars are not as sexy as yesterday's stars - but it's my opinion. For the most part though, I agree. Quaid still holds his own today as an older and more mature man - I think he's very sexy!
-
I couldn't agree more! God forbid that TCM ever shows a colorized film! What a gruesome thought. I also like letterbox - because as was noted, movies are made the way they are for a reason - I don't want to be deprived of that reason and thereby only see part of a film.

Strangest Musical Moments on film, 1928-1960
katyscar11ett replied to ThinMan15's topic in General Discussions
LOL Looks like I can't read either. I totally missed the 1928-1960 reference. I don't know why those years specifically ??? Usually we discuss them all. Sorry.
