Strangest Musical Moments on film, 1928-1960
katyscar11ett replied to ThinMan15's topic in General Discussions
No, posts do not have to discuss movies before 1960 - we discuss all movies on here, although usually classics, but nothing is taboo. I think you made a good point about Lee Marvin - and I really laughed at the thought of Eddy G. in a tu-tu. Too funny indeed. -
TCM greatest thing since sliced bread and more !!
katyscar11ett replied to Chauncey's topic in General Discussions
Hi Chauncey! Yes, to all the wonderful things you've said about TCM. I'm in Alberta and have been getting an American feed for about 8 years so have enjoyed TCM to the nth degree. Don't be thanking the CRTC - they suck bigtime IMO, and seem to forget we live in a democracy despite our igloos - but I thank God and TCM every day! lol -
I just love some of the ideas already posted. Osbourne and Lipton would be a blast! And Orson and Joseph Cotton - wow I'd be mesmerized. Just imagine! I think I'd have to go with Claude Rains though. That would be such fun. ^^ And for a 'modern' actor - I think Kevin Spacey or Anthony Hopkins. Or maybe Michael Caine.

Thanks for asking Spencer. Like most of us here, I have so many 'favorites' that I'm glad that I don't have to pick just four for real. hehe For fun, though, I'm gonna pick 4 that I haven't seen in a long time - likely most of them aren't in the TCM library but I've just picked them cuz I'd love to see them all again: Of Mice and Men (1939 version) Witness for the Prosecution Letter to Three Wives Lost Horizon I know TCM has many, many wonderful movies but I'm trying to pick ones that haven't been picked before. Casablanca (as cliche as it sounds) really IS my very favorite movie of ever - and it was featured earlier this year. I definitely would have picked The Third Man - I've been waiting patiently all year for it to finally show - and loved it! So many wonderful movies have been shown that TCM does have in the vaults that I certainly don't want it to look like I don't appreciate what they do show! White Heat, for instance, is very essential. JMHO!

Bah Humbug!!! Where are all the good Christmas films? I've checked not only TCM but also FOX and the other movies channels that I got when I ordered FOX (never would have paid for them otherwise lol). NOBODY has many Christmas movies. Disappointing! Granted, TCM is showing a few - more than anyone else, naturally, but not too many either. Personally, I like Scrooge better than A Christmas Carol with Reginald Owen - although that version isn't bad, nothing beats Alaister Sim on his head Christmas morning. ^^ But where are It's a Wonderful Life, Holiday Inn, White Christmas and others that escape me right now? Did the Grinch arrive again? AMC is showing 'something' if I recall correctly - I think it's Holiday Inn - but for those of us who REFUSE to turn on a movie channel with commercials . . . Where's all the Christmas spirit, movie channels? Does anyone know where these movies are hidding? Also, A Bishop's Wife. I'm disheartened.

There are SO many good ones - I want to pick It's a Wonderful Life but I'm gotta pick Scrooge with Alaister Sim. It is so totally uplifting. But then so is Wonderful Life - but with only one choice, gotta go with Scrooge.

That would be really cool Waldo. I'd love to see some of those tests! I adore Vivien (obviously) and would love to see more of her films. One of my favorite movies is Wuthering Heights with Laurence Olivier and Merle Oberon. I think they are both wonderful in it - and I do like Oberon. But Robert Osbourne has said that Olivier wanted Vivien in the role of Cathy - and I so wish he's have gotten his way. IMO that would have been even better!!! Just my opinion!

I'll vote for Mongo, too. hehe Larry doesn't know all that much about actual movies, he's said himself, he has just known a lot of fabulous people - but I'd listen to his stories anyday. :3 Fascinating life and wonderful reading. I don't find Ben any of the "bad" things that have been discussed - I guess it's all in the perception. Someone asked for 'constructive criticism' and the only thing I can say is that he often looks over to his left (our right) when he's talking and that is somewhat distracting. Other than that, I think he's really good. When I think of some people we "could have" had, Ben seems pretty right on to me.
-
No, unfortunately, it's only the questions - but I just have someone read me the questions when we're relaxing having coffee etc. and it's amazing how much I learn - and frankly, by this time, already know. :3 It's fun.
-
I can't comment on Scene It cuz I haven't got it - too few questions to keep me happy. I think there is 600. However, I bought a Trivial Pursuit Silver Screen edition from Ebay for $5 plus shipping. I know they have more or did at the time. There is 6,000 questions and it's lots of fun to play. Just food for thought.

Personally, I like Ben Mankowietz and think he does a fine job. Maybe not superb like Robert Osbourne but we've been spoiled with Osbourne for there is none better IMO and I think it's unfair to compare ANYONE to him. Mary Lou, yep, I've seen some fine criticism posted on this board about Ben - like some who don't like his wardrobe - what that has to do with movies and his intelligence is beyond me however.

I'm really glad that movies are repeated so that when I miss one I have another opportunity to see it. Not just on TCM but on FOX and other channels as well. But I do agree that some movies are played TO DEATH. 'Splendor in the Grass' this year comes immediately to mind. Also, I have last year's schedule and have compared Jan /06 with Jan /05 and Feb /06 with Feb /05 and am disappointed to see that quite a few movies are not only replayed but in their exact same spots as last year - in otherwords were not changed at all. Makes you wonder what the programmer is doing - or not doing, doesn't it? For the most part, though, I do like what happens with the scheduling but a little more thought would be appreciated.

Mongo - thanks so much for the info about Albert Salmi. I was especially glad to hear you describe him as 'underrated'. :-) Actually, 'Of Late I Think of Cliffordsville' is my favorite Twilight Zone episode - and I'm fortunate enough to have them all. I really got to appreciate him because of TZ. Great news about his offer of an Oscar nomination - I'm sure he deserved it. I will watch that movie, "The Brothers K. . . ", (it's a Yul Brenner movie I believe) as soon as I get the chance.. Very sad news about his/his wife's death. I was hoping maybe he was still around and I could contact him. Scarlett

Of course I might as well just ask now - so - - What can you find out about an actor by the name of Albert Salmi/Salmai. He was a 60s actor mostly, I think but am not sure. He was in a couple of movies I've seen but was also in some really good Twilight Zone episodes. I think he was a way better actor than a lot of better known actors of the 60's - but then I thought the 60's sucked. But - I do like Salmai. Sorry I'm not sure on the spelling. But knowing you - you can find him. heheh Thanks bunches! :-)
-
Last post in this thread has been awhile - are you around Mongo? I'm pulling this thread up cuz it should be near the top IMO. Once I know if you're around, I've got a question for ya! :-)
-
Keep checking the schedule - TCM plays it quite often. There is also an article about it at: http://turnerclassicmovies.com/ThisMonth/Article/0,,66868,00.html I agree that it's a good movie although the ending was a bit harsh IMO. But those were the days - - -

For tcmprogrammr re Bing Crosby Star of the Month
katyscar11ett replied to yanceycravat's topic in General Discussions
"Next month Bing Crosby is the Star of the Month" I wonder whose idea THAT was? Bing Crosby was OK - but Star of the Month material? Not a chance. There are so many more deserving, IMO. -
"Yeah, did you notice that Flynn's name fights with Stewart Granger's? Perfect!" I LOVE this ad so much that I recorded it long ago. hehe It's funny how it's 'different strokes for different folks' though because the ONLY thing I didn't like about the ad IS that Flynn's name fights with Granger's. I thought they could have picked someone MUCH better than Granger - Ty Power, for instance. JMHO.
-
I thoroughly enjoy "Jennie" and also "Dorian Gray" - although I enjoy Jennie more. I'm really glad I copied them both because I, also, watch them often. I also copied them on the same DVD because one always brings to mind the other. I'm pleased to say that these are both movies that my 20 year old daughter and her circle of friends also enjoy.

Wouldn't we all. heheh I hate to tell you, but I have a feeling that if you'd have won, you'd know by now. :-)

There are tons of movies waiting to be shown
katyscar11ett replied to cinexpert's topic in General Discussions
Tom, Alex, I applaud your comments - my DVD collection, too, is huge, thanks primarily to TCM. Yes, there are repeats - we hear about it ad naseum. I wish, myself, that there weren't quite so many - but they do what they can, for the most part and all we can do is suggest - and suggest - and sometimes, suggest some more. Whining and complaining (no, I'm not referring to anything specifically when I say that) in general doesn't do any good and I don't think the programmer even bothers reading that type of thing. Everyone can always do better and currently TCM is the BEST, bar none, and I'm sure trying to improve all the time. Thanks TCM for the great job! -
Nevah!! FMC will never be as good as TCM - however, I did just purchase it a couple of months ago and am currently absorbed with it! One reason is because I just love Ty Power and lately I've seen an incredible amount of his movies - also other great ones that I haven't seen lately, Heaven Can Wait, Laura, Jane Eyre, etc. So, yes I think Fox is a good channel. But it certainly doesn't have the variety - and never will have - that TCM has. And - if you are patient, TCM usually does lease/rent, (whatever) some Fox movies and show them periodically, as with films from most studios. I am really sorry to read about the Charlie Chan films, I've often wondered why I don't see them, or Mr. Moto (adore Peter Lorre) and I guess the 'stereotype' thing would explain it - I wish they'd give it a rest! Are these, both Chan and Motto available on DVD, however? It's like Disney with "Song of the South" - that frustrates me - IMO it's only a kids story and I sure wish they would release it. Eventually, Fox might get old and repetitive to me - but for now, I'm really happy to have both.

Larry's Classic Star Reminiscences
katyscar11ett replied to vecchiolarry's topic in General Discussions
Thanks so much, you 2, I always glean so much information from both of you. ^^ I'll be on the lookout for Cocoon, although it doesn't sound very good - lol - and if Ty plays an alien, his good looks are likely all destroyed. I was amazed, Mongo, about the "Cheers" episodes - I watch TVLand all the time and I "don't think" I've ever seen him - what a hoot if I didn't even recognize him. Darsh it all! I really laughed at the comment about him being divorced with a son named Tyrone "naturally" - yep, what else? hehe Thanks again.
