Great site you have Path - thanks for all the wonderful information!

Thanks path and mongo - will do exactly that!

Just for the record - I do plan on discussing classic movies on this board - and hopefully I will make a few friends. :-) But the same as any other place in life, there will be people who don't like me, don't like my opinions or will want to argue with me - and I really don't care that much or plan to lose any sleep over it. Those people can go their own way and I will go mine, we do not have to interact. I'm not going to get involved in one of 'these' again - with anyone!

Thank you for sharing this tzcutter. VERY interesting. :-)

Not a problem Johnny. I live in Southern Alberta, near Lethbridge. I call Lethbridge my 'home town' as lots of people know where that is. I really come from a small town 1/2 hour from Lethbridge - as Larry would know, we are famous for our corn. LOL

During this week Donna Reed (tomorrow) and Irene Dunne (later in the week) have their days on TCM. There are many movies by both ladies that I haven't seen - and aren't in my movie book so I can't rely on it to tell me what's good and what isn't. :-( Could/would you Mongo or someone else who is a big fan of these ladies please check the schedule and maybe tell me some movies that are good and that I should watch. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

All Fans of Sunset Boulevard Give Your Opinion of This
katyscar11ett replied to bhryun's topic in General Discussions
Boy - that is such a hard call to make. It's almost impossible without seeing both performances. I love Monty - but really like Holden, too. It's hard to imagine a better performance than that given by Holden, though, so I'd leave it as is. It's like when I heard that Burt Lancaster was the first choice to play Ben-Hur. Well, I'm not a Heston fan so my first thought was that I wished Lancaster would have played it - and I'm positive he would have been great - but whether I like Heston or not, he was wonderful in Ben-Hur - so why even consider changing it? My choice of an actor would still be Lancaster, hands down - but why change near perfection which Heston gave in the movie. JMHO. -
Larry's Classic Star Reminiscences

Larry, please don't leave - you and Mongo are the most informed, most enjoyable on this board. Sorry, I didn't mean to insult anyone but most of you will likely agree with me. Those who don't like to argue, I mean. :-) -
Thank you so much Mongo - for hearing what I have been trying to say. My comment was NOT intended as yours was not. :-)

Thanks for the info, I'll be sure to watch now. Sounds delicious! ;-)

I have tried HARD to explain that using the term was an error in judgment, a faux pas - to no avail, it seems. My mistake, an unforgivable one it seems, was not putting quotes around the "j" word so that it was known that I was quoting from the movie and that I, personally, do not have any prejudice. For THAT I apologize. I do not know any Japanese people, there are not many in my part of Canada. I was under the understanding that it was simply shortening the word Japanese, that is acceptable for so many other nationalies. I've even talked to friends about this, I was at a meeting last night, and only 1 guy in the room knew it was considered a slur. I don't know - but it seems there was not/is not the racial issue with the Japanese here in Canada as there was in the US. So far on this thread I have been called names, lectured, insulted and ordered what to do - that makes it very hard for me to WANT to say ANYTHING. However, I am sorry that my comment was taken out of the context I mean it in. I thought it was obvious, but I guess it wasn't. However, I have looked further on the board and have seen the term "indian" which, in my country, is an insult. I have also seen the term "damn communists" - which I don't feel is acceptable either since people who live in communist countries are not "damn communists" but following their dictated government. I do not believe the posters intended to be insulting, any more than I did. I hope we have heard the last of this issue. BTW, Clark Gable NEVER used the "n*****" word in Gone With The Wind so please don't insult him for something I did in error.

On The Beach is my favorite movie about war.

Thank you teepad. Very helpful indeed. :-)

This has gotten out of hand and I won't dignify it with another response - I said the slur was unintended and you keep going on -- and on -- You can call me a child or uneducated if it pleases you and I'm sure you get some preverse pleasure in calling me names for the unintended name I apparently called you. Power to you! Being attacked by "Japanese people" on a classic movie list, about being racist, is INDEED a surprise but whatever floats your boat. Personally, I come here to discuss my love of classic movies so if you want to argue further it will have to be with someone else. I was talking about classic movies, asking about a classic movie, and absorbed with a classic movie while discussing it and IN this classic movie, they called Japanese people "japs" so I did the same in discussing the movie - if THIS offends you there must be LOTS of classic movies that you won't watch as there are a lot of racist comments in many movies. I'm sure William Holden would tell you the same thing. I'm done defending myself because this is obviously never ending. I'm sure most sensible people reading this can see that my intention was not harmful.

Better be careful how you title this thread Mongo - there might be some hookers, tramps and whores out there who get offended. ;-) Just joking - great thread. Although I hate to think of her in those terms Gilda is one of my favorite roles of all times, so Rita gets my vote. Though, I'm not big on Shirley MacLaine, I also gotta go with Irma La Douce. Good acting, cute movie.

PBFH that is tooooo funny tracy. I'm going to use that one when appropriate. ;-)

Olivia de Havilland was a mega heart-less *itch to Bette Davis in 'Hush, Hush Sweet Charlotte' which I just watched again this week. Almost as nasty as Bette was to Joan Crawford in 'Whatever Happened to Baby Jane'. Although, she didn't feed Bette - well, you know - - hehe

I agree that Sim was the best ever in Scrooge - when he stands on his head always makes me roar with laughter. :-)

I don't appreciate being condensended to, classicsfan1119. I know you can read or you wouldn't have been able to post 3,009 messages - however, you obviously didn't read my post very well or you would have read "Japs was certainly not meant as a racial comment." and I'm sure any Japanese people reading this will understand and forgive my faux pas. At least "I" tried. ;-)

Thanks Nick - much appreciated. :-)
-
Thank you SO much Mongo. I really appreciate you going to all that trouble and coming up with the answer for me. :-)
-
OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOo :-O I had no more idea that Japanese people took offense to being called japs than police officers do to being called cops. I'm still not sure you are correct - japs is just shortening the word Japanese. Polish people don't get upset at being called poles - at least not the ones that I know, nor Swedish people swedes, etc. Japs was certainly not meant as a racial comment. Just for your information!

Does anyone have this game? I've been debating getting it - as I love trivia games. I have Trivial Pursuit Silver Screen edition and play it all the time - I usually get about 75% of the questions right and am gonna keep going until I know them all, I hope. :-) Not blowing my own horn here, just getting to my point - The point is that TP has 6,000 questions and Scene It has only 600 - so I don't know what kind of value I'd be getting. It seems to me that once you know the answer to 600 questions, you would remember them - thus losing the point of the game. Any comments/info would be appreciated. Thanks.

Who's got your heart? (A male and female question)
katyscar11ett replied to bhryun's topic in Your Favorites
I know this isn't in the way you meant it - but he certainly has my heart. I've mentioned in other threads that I never had a 'good' father figure and I've always wished I'd had a dad like what I imagine Claude Rains was - so the man is VERY special to me - and he definitely has my heart. I adore him! :-)
