  1. Hmmmmm - I found Marilyn to be very sexy, not sleazy. But - found Marlene Dietrich sleazy, not sexy. I like her much better in her "unsexy" roles.
  2. For sure - many compliments to all TCM does - it does so much more than just show great films. Thank you so much for not showing colorized pictures. :-) When faced with that issue, on another channel of course, I would always watch the movie on a black and white TV - not able to anymore. lol And with TCM, we never have to resort to 'tricks' - we get things as they should be. Thank you for the letter-boxing, too, and all the other things that have been mentioned. Mostly, of course, for your great line-up of fantastic movies. :-)
  3. IMO not only the 'sexiest' woman but also the sexiest moment in the movies is when Gilda tosses her hair back. And that's coming from a 110% heterosexual female. hehe Rita Hayworth floors me at that moment and I never get tired of watching it. Total and complete sex appeal. I watch her in that scene as I would look at and appreciate a beautiful painting or stunning sculpture. With total awe. :-) Doris Day? I don't get that at all.
  4. Forgot to ask - is there any other studio, other than Fox, that TCM has a difficult time getting movies from? I know some British ones are hard to come by, at least ones that I can think of that I have never seen on TCM (such as the funny 'Carry On' series), but I mean the "big" American studios. Or is Fox the major problem? Are "most" movies shown on TCM eventually? I can be patient lol and I love TCM. Thanks. And thanks for the link to thefoxmoviechannel. :-)
  5. Thank y'all so much. Great information. That will definitely help me decide whether or not to order FoxMovies. :-)
  6. I couldn't disagree more. What difference does it make how old Spacey was - he looked SOOOO much like Darin - I almost forgot he wasn't Darin. I haven't been so impressed with a bio since the days of Paul Muni. Someone mentioned that Spacey is an impersonator as well - no surprise there, he did Darin 99%. Loved the movie - and Spacey. IMO, NO-body could have done it better!
  7. Wow! Someone who doesn't like The Wizard is indeed an oddity. heheh I loved it, thoroughly enjoyed it, and was bowled over by my 5 year-old loving it and being quiet through it just as my other kids were. I've never seen a kid who didn't love it. In fact, he watched it BOTH days. I gotta also disagree with - or maybe not disagree with, just give my opinion on - I loved 31 Days of Oscar. I wish they would play ALL the nominees from 1939 (THE year of movies) though. I think that would be fantastic!
  8. Gotta agree with Cool Hand Luke, for sure, although most of your list is "newer" classics and I prefer older ones. I never liked Paul Newman, to put it very mild, until CHL and now it's one of my favorite movies and I've learned to like and respect Newman. My other requests would be Of Mice and Men, (Meredith and Chaney version, of course). Letter to 3 Wives and as I complain on other threads, anything by Ty Power. lol
  9. Really nice to see young people like getoverit loving classics. My daughter tells people she was "raised right" too. hehe. My dad was a projectionist, theatre manager so I always remember watching movies - but I always loved the 30's and 40's the best - still do. I spent a lot of time alone as a kid and would get right into the "matinees" etc. played on our one and only TV channel. Then when I was in grade 4, my mom worked and my dad was away for the winter - I really raised Cain, lol, we were supposed to be back at school from lunch at 1:25. Matinee began at 1:00 and I would begin watching it. I missed school every day that it was good, which was most of the time. About 3 or 4 afternoons a week, I missed school. The school couldn't reach my parent durng the day so I got away with it most of the year before everyone caught on. LOL I had a great time! And really fell in love with classic movies.
  10. Certainly acting ability is discussed MOST often - but it's fun to talk about other things occassionally. :-) I agree with most you've mentioned, my exception would be Brando, but I know that's my "personal" opinion - he is well thought of and looked up to in the industry. I would hasten to add William Powell, whom I love, and don't believe they come much better than. Also, Paul Muni, Orson Welles, Robert Montgomery and as always, Claude Rains. Of course, asking my favorites is like asking which of my children I love most. :-)
  11. Truly it is in the "eye of the beholder" - I've seen most of Brando's movies including Streetcar and he leaves me cold. Not talking acting now, just sex appeal. I didn't like his version of Mutiny on the Bounty, though. No Gable, for sure, IMO. I thought he was almost sickening in The Wild One. Couldn't stomach that movie. I guess it was well acted though, or I wouldn't have detested him. hehe Also, my 23 year old daughter finds Edward G. Robinson sexy - which I can see in an "odd" sort of way - powerful is sexy. Certainly not handsome, lol, and although I don't find him sexy, I can understand why someone might. But then, I think Mike Myers (not his characters, but Mike himself) is adorable! So - different strokes. :-)
  12. I sure hope I have my information right, if not, please forgive me. It's been 30+ years since I've seen either movie. I don't even know if either one is any good, but I'd like to see them again to find out. :-) 1) Clint Eastwood movie, I'm almost positive, but I'm not a big Eastwood fan so I'm not certain. Horror movie about a family who winds up in a weird community (car trouble?) which ends up being full of witches/devil worshippers. Final shot is of Eastwood suspended from a rope upside down - maybe above a fire? 2) I believe British - don't think anyone "important" is in this one but not sure cuz I wasn't too up on classic movies at this time so it could include someone well known. About an aristocratic family who wind up on a desert island (shipwrecked, I'm sure lol) along with their "staff". The butler winds up being the "head" of this island community. He and the eldest daughter of the household fall in love. However, as he warned her, when they are rescued and back to civilization, they resume their "place" in the household and their love is no more. Don't even know what made me think of these movies but I thought it might be food for thought for someone. :-) Thanks.
  13. I learned on another thread that the reason TCM shows little - if any - 2oth Century Fox movies is because they are shown on the Fox movie channel. Making total sense, of course. We were discussing Ty Power movies - he must have been under contract to Fox. Before I rush out to get that channel, I'd like to know who else was contracted to Fox. Also, any great movies that are Fox CLASSIC movies. Of Mice and Men is one we never seem to see, was that a Fox movie? I'd just like to get an idea of what I am missing by not having that channel. $10 extra a month for that package. TCM seems to have SO much of all the good stuff, it can't be lacking TOO much. :-)
  14. Had to go to Calgary yesterday - was listening to an oldies radio station - CFR - 6.60, I believe. Just curious and you seem to know so much about things. There was not that much Canadian content in old music - they play some but certainly not enough to qualify as 30% - how does CFR get away with playing less than 30% Canadian content thus satisfying the CRTC? Couldn't TCM do the same thing? Just wondering if you knew.
  15. I've heard there are also many in Casablanca - can someone mention some please? This thread is great fun - I've learned a lot. :-)
  16. Just saw one the other day - White Banners with my favorite, Claude Rains. :-) Good movie but I hate those sad old endings about the "bad bad girl" losing everything. As also in Stella Dallas (also good movie), etc. "They" could have made their point without totally destroying the women in these movies. Whatcha think?
  17. Thanks TCM programmer - I did notice that it will be on The Essentials in December - but thanks for answering my question although I still don't understand why it wasn't shown during Orson's month. :-) I also noticed that Jane Eyre was missing, as well, one of my favorite Orson pictures. If that comment about Orson Welles and HG Wells was directed at me, I assure you I know the difference. :-) However, I didn't know what connection was being made with WOTW.
  18. Agree with the "Yup". :-) I didn't know Raft made that many movies. I've always liked him and would like to see many I've obviously missed. I also agree with you about Ronald Reagen. I think he was a much better actor than given credit for. He was magnificent in King's Row.
  19. I "think" the character Madonna played was "Breathless" - or was that another movie? lol I don't like Madonna at all, but have to admit she did an excellent job with that character. Nice to hear that so many agree with me about the CRTC - Canada is supposed to be a democracy. :-( I think it's really sad that they can tell us what we can and can't watch.
  20. I know - and I'm not trying to be difficult but - I never could understand why. But, it is definitely each to their own and I definitely don't like Brando. Can't see one thing about him to like. But then I don't like a few others that a lot of people seem to - Rock Hudson, Doris Day, Liz Taylor. Can't think of a single sole out of the 30s and 40s that I don't like though. :-) And, yes, I know Liz started her career that early but I consider her a "50s" actress, of which there are quite a few that I don't care for. :-) But regardless, Marlon Bradon is "supposed to" have been so sexy. Even if I cared for him, I wouldn't get it. :-) Or good looking, either. :-) Opinions are fun, though. :-)
  21. During the Orson month? Better yet, why a bio about The Third Man and no showing of it? I was really cheesed off - I love Orson and that's my favorite film of his. Is it perhaps owned by someone else too?
  22. THANK you guys so much! I'm in Canada and didn't know anything about the FOX network. (Maybe I'm just out of touch. I watch TCM 99% of the time.) I'll get my dish company to add it to my package right away! I don't care about repeats if I get to see what I want. Thanks so much for the info - I assume they play quite a few classics? About Lana - yes, in her book she discusses being pregnant with Ty's baby, which ended in abortion - what a child that would have turned out to be! The photos I've seen of his son (don't know who his mom is) are awesome - just about as gorgeous as his dad. :-)
  23. Larry, I cannot imagine who you are that you know so many people - all I can say is great stuff! I notice you're from Calgary - I'm from Lethbridge. LOL (For the rest of you, we're both from Alberta, about 150 miles apart). Funny to meet on here when Canadian's aren't even "supposed to" be able to get TCM. :-) I know I would DIE without it - or maybe just wish I would. :-) Soooo - the way I get it is a "bit" illegal - but I DO pay for it, the dish company just "think" I'm in the States. :-) Hope my saying that can't get my goose cooked! Damn CRTC anyway! TCM forever reign!
  24. It was so interesting to watch this thread because "different strokes for different folks". :-) There are many that I agree with on here, but some I wouldn't walk across the street to see. As I'm sure most of you are with some of the choices. This is great fun. :-)
