  1. I read this thread tongue in cheek cuz I've heard so many people think they look like 'someone' and they don't at all. Not that I'm disputing anyone here, I'll betcha some of you are totally correct. I once was in a tourist shop and saw a guy who to this day I'm not sure if he was Carroll O'Connor or not - it WAS in California. But it's amazing how often you hear someone say "that person looks like *whoever*" and you don't see it AT ALL. I really laughed at the person whose dad looks like Barney Rubble - that I would pay to see. hehehe

  2. With regard to British humor, when I was a teenager I really liked a bunch of movies called the Carry On movies. I haven't seen these since I WAS a teen. (Long, long ago in a village far, far away - - - ) I'm curious to know if these are really good movies or if, as a teenager, I just didn't know good from bad. hehe I don't remember much about them except that I found them funny at the time.

I 'should' really try to at least watch a few Woody Allen movies - then I might now what I'm talking about - you know, contempt prior to investigation and all that - - -

  3. I couldn't agree with you more - nobody, but nobody hates remakes more than I do. I shouldn't have even commented. I guess I just reacted cuz I like Mike Myers so much - the funny thing is that I am not altogether sure how I feel about his movies (except for Shrek lol) or his characters - the thing I like best about Myers, is Mike himself. I think he is charming, witty and very intelligent.

  4. I feel rather foolish asking this question - I should have been able to figure it out for myself - but hopefully someone can help me.

Bridge on the River Kwai -

I just watched this movie that I recorded when last on TCM - great movie, as you know - but there was something at the end that I didn't quite get even though I watched it twice. At the end, the major of Bill Holden's bunch, I believe it was Jack Warden but I really don't recognize him that readily yet - said *SPOILER* something like "I had to do it, I had to do it, what if they'd been taken alive." Now I realize that he was "suicide happy" and overly fearful about people being captured alive, etc. But am I to assume that HE, not the Japs, killed Holden and/or Guinness? Or even Joyce? If I'd have had a man with me, I'm sure he could have explained it, lol, but alas, I didn't and I don't understand much about guns, war etc. I had thought the shots that were being fired at our boys were coming from the Japs. Please explain. Thanks. :-)

  5. Comedy is not my primary focus when it comes to movies - although I do love a good one. I'm a bit confused when it comes to some terms, though. What exactly makes screwball, screwball; slapstick, slapstick; and what is exactly the difference. I think I have 'somewhat' of an idea but I can't really put it in words. Like I know that the Marx Bros are slapstick whereas Cary Grant/Ginger Rogers would be screwball - but I can't tell you "why". Thanks for any insight. :-)

  6. WOW! What a loaded question! Mine would all be male - and not for the reason you're thinking. Well, not ALL anyway. *grin*

    1) Claude Rains - since I've always thought of him as the father I wish I'd had, he could sleep anywhere or do anything he darn well pleased - and bring any lady he liked to do it with hehe

    2) Definately all the gangsters - whether it would be one at a time or all together is another question - that would be the problem. Cagney, Raft, Bogie, Muni, Robinson, Lorre, Greenstreet. Lorre and Greenstreet would have to be there at the same time. Cagney and Raft could sleep 'anywhere' they wanted. hehe

    3) Orson Welles, Robert Montgomery, William Powell, John Garfield

    4) Errol Flynn, Tyrone Power - and I ain't telling where they'd be sleeping. lol

Yep, I know I'm "over-drawn" but I dunno if I can get it down any lower. I guess if I "had to" I'd leave out Greenstreet, Robinson, Welles and Montgomery in that order - but it's my fantasy so I get 14. lol Now I'm going before I think of 12 more.

  7. Speaking of White Heat - - when it was being discussed the announcer said something about Cagney having an "oedipus complex" in this movie. I've been doing a lot of thinking about it since and even though Cody Jarrett was a psycho and a jerk, I think he was just close to his mother - but not necessarily in a twisted, demented way. Yes, she was as unlawful as he was and he definitely loved her a lot but I felt he was in love with Virginia Mayo - well as in love as Cody could be - and didn't feel anything "strange" about his mother. Which makes me wonder, especially at the time, why males who had a close relationship to their mothers were always looked at a sickos. Maybe the announcer was joking, maybe serious, I don't know - but I'm curious what y'all think. I wonder what the book said about it - assuming White Heat is a book. I know that there were supposed to be homosexual innuendos in the book The Maltese Falcon that I have never thought/think of when I see the movie. Maybe there's more to this than I ever thought about, as well?! Comments?

  8. I've always wanted to see Charles Laughton's Award winning portrayal of King Henry VIII but in all my searches have never turned it up. Has it ever been played on TCM? Is it a FOX movie and played on FOX? Is it still available? Any info would be appreciated. Thanks.

  9. I agree with Mongo - Letter to Three Wives has always been one of my favorite movies ever - and I think it ended wonderfully. Paul Douglas left with Addy but realized that he really loved Linda Darnell so came home. Jeffrey Lynn didn't leave at all, it just looked that way. I figure Paul Douglas is a very overlooked actor - he became very special to me after watching this movie. One of the few movies I could watch once a month. :-)

  10. Boy, aren't we an opinated bunch? Notice I said WE - me too. lol But it's getting bad when we like or dislike someone by their choice of clothes. Personally, I like the way Bob Osbourne (Osbourne or Osborne?) dresses and think he's a very classy man. If HE looked like he felt uncomfortable in suits, I might agree but he is a natural. And if Ben wants to wear suits, layers or a T-shirt, what does that have to do with his classic movie ability? Not knocking the posters, I just don't understand what one has to do with the other.

I'm getting more used to Ben - I did post that he ain't no Robert Osborne - but who is? They will NEVER find another Bob! Can't be done, for my money. So, Ben isn't too bad. I would just like to know how many classics he really watches or does he just say what he's told to say? I also don't mind Peter Bogdanovich - maybe he's just not an in-your-face type of guy, quietier and more laid back. I think he's quite knowledgable about movies. About Clooney, I really liked him a lot. Dorian I didn't care for a bit. I think he was always aware that he was "on" air and wasn't natural - but frankly, I just didn't care for the guy. Nick, I liked a lot. I wish TCM could get him.

Can anyone supply any background on Robert Osbourne? He just IS TCM. I wonder if he's a stock-holder? He really seems to care about and love his job and it seems "more" than a job with him - he truly loves the classics. But how many do you REALLY think he watches. He can't watch everything, can he? I know he watches a lot - but everything? Where did he come from? What was he before he was Mr. TCM? He's so intelligent and handsome - wonder if he can act? lol

  11. This is a great thread - I'm glad it hasn't started any wars. hehe It's really interesting to read these opinions some of which I agree and some I don't understand - but that's the name of the game right?! :-) I just discussed this on another thread but I'm reposting it where it should have been in the first place, I guess.

Cabaret - without a doubt. What a disappointment!

Anything by Tennessee Williams. I just plain don't get it! Do not understand the "greatness" here at all. His movies leave me wanting oxygen.

  12. Yes, I'd love to see them both - I was without TCM from last Sept to Dec but I don't remember them airing them too often before that and they haven't been on since Dec 1, I'm pretty sure. I know The Defiant Ones was on in early Dec - cuz I know I missed it. Darn!

  13. I don't mind Tom Cruise, to be honest - mostly because in the new league of actors, we can't dislike everyone - and God knows there are enough to truly dislike. I have seen some of those movies and liked some of them - but I really could take him or leave him. About Academy Award nominations - well, I have to go back to my usual comment about most Awards given/nominees since about 1960 - what were the alternatives? Many awards have been given IMO that shouldn't have even been nominated - but what were the alternatives? More crap. So, was Tom deserving of the nominations? Who knows? In the 30s and 40s, he wouldn't have even been noticed. As we all know. hehe

Larry, Nancy Sr. is the only one I ever liked either. Not that I know much about the Sinatras - I guess I just felt sorry for her but she always acted like a lady. Mongo, maybe I would have found Frank a bit easier to take if HE hadn't thought himself to be so "cool" - but it's doubtful. lol

I did notice though throughout the "newer" actor bashing nobody bashed Matt Damon, which made me happy because I think he is the best of the new breed.

  14. I am so glad you posted that about One, Two, Three. I had that question come up in Trivial Pursuit (Movie edition) and didn't think it sounded very good - now I will definitely look out for it. Great tip. Thx.

Also thanks for the heads up about Shake Hands with the Devil, another one I wasn't gonna bother with - but I taped it last night and will watch it today.

I learn so much from these boards and really appreciate it.

  15. Read Tolkien many years ago - and loved LOTR. Haven't seen the movies yet - I'm afraid they won't be as good as the books, I guess, even though I hear they are. I'm mighty glad that my kids have discovered Tolkien, however, as well as the Star Wars films. :-) Proves Mom ain't quite so stupid after all. lol

  16. I thought Margaret O'Brien was much more natural than Shirley Temple and I find her enjoyable to watch. I also like Freddie Bartholemew. I really don't like many kid actors to be honest but those 2 I like. Jackie Cooper was good, too.

Someone mentioned about Jane Withers awful life - please elaborate on that ?? Didn't like her much as a kid - but I did enjoy her as Josephine the plumber - nuts, I know. lol
