  1. *"Viva la Netflix, Viva la youtube."* - JG Y vaya con Dios, Kyle In Hollywood
  2. *"A month or two ago, TCM showed a movie from the 1950s about a ruthless newspaper mogul's rise to the top. I believe it was a Bob's Pick. Does anyone know the name of it?"* - AskTheMan... I guess you are thinking of *Citizen Kane* (1941), which is "based on" the life of newspaper magnate William Randolph Hearst. It was part of the "Critic's Choice" event in October. If not, I am not sure what it is - but it likely wasn't a "Bob's Pick" in the months since September. Kyle In Hollywood

  7. *"Also don't forget The Cheshire Cat in all versions of Alice in Wonderland, who has no head to begin with."* - misswonderly Ha ha! Now THAT is a witty addition to the list. Brava! Kyle In Hollywood
  8. *"Guess I hit a nerve. It's OK to criticize a network, you know, no matter if Ted Turner is "involved" or not. Makes them even better."* - eleniblue No one said it wasn't OK to criticize. But with your criticism, you brought with you some very erroneous assumptions that made your complaints, at the very least, misguided. Some of us attempted to let you know that, to the contrary, there _are_ "holiday" films on TCM this week. I wanted to explain the primary motivation behind the showing of the film *Gandhi* on Saturday afternoon. In your post, those seemed to be your biggest issues. If all you wanted to do was vent, so be it. No harm in that. But consider yourself enlightened. While catering to advertisers can influence most other channels' programming decisions, that is not the case with TCM. Because TCM doesn't show commercials, it is more commited and responsive to its viewers than any other channel on cable television. It has operated with that guiding principle for the entirety of its 16+ year existence. Because of that philosophy towards its audience, along with the value TCM places on traditions, TCM viewers do develop great expectations. But such expectations are inevitably followed by indivdual disappointments - both great and small - but mostly small. Are those disappointments in programming the really fault of TCM or of the viewers themselves? Last year, to the disappointment of many, TCM didn't show *The Bishop's Wife* in December - but it has returned for the 2010 holidays. This year *Christmas in Connecticut* isn't part of the line-up. It's quite likely the Stanwyck film will return in the future. In the mean time, you can enjoy Barbara Stanwyck in *Remember The Night* with Fred MacMurray and Beulah Bondi this year. It is every bit as good. I hope you have a merry and memorable Christmas. Kyle In Hollywood
  9. *"Just because the Alistair Sim version hasn't been on for years, doesn't make it unworthy. Many would attest that it's the best version."* - eleniblue I don't think anyone here wrote anything negative or dismissive of Alistair Sim's *Scrooge* nor think of it as unworthy for showing on TCM. Most here would probably agree with your appraisal of the film. But I don't think TCM has ever shown the film. My VHS copy was taken off of AMC in the 90s. *"Sounds like you guys work for the man, Ted Turner."* As what, his valet or housekeeper? Mr. Turner is not longer involved with Turner Entertainment Networks and hasn't been for nearly a decade. For the most part, the members here don't take the time to complain about what TCM is NOT showing. Instead we choose to celebrate and enjoy the films TCM does present - including the holiday films that TCM is presenting this December. Kyle In Hollywood Edited by: hlywdkjk on Dec 19, 2010 7:27 AM

  11. Somewhere in the Forum "archives" there's a thread with a picture of the Christmas Tree from *Bell, Book and Candle* which is about as close to an aluminum tree as they ever got in the movies that I can remember. Kyle (I think 'rohanaka' posted it) In Hollywood

  13. *"Long before the war--1920. He grew up in Cleveland of all places. His family immigrated when he was about 5."* - traceyk65 Thanks kiddo. I didn't know that. I only knew he was born in England. Kyle In Hollywood
  14. *"Kyle: Yes, I'm the evil person who paired Our Daily Bread and Soylent Green. Although perhaps a more apt pairing for Soylent Green might be either The Man Who Came to Dinner or Guess Who's Coming to Dinner."* - Fedya Ha! But I think you got it right the first time. Kyle In Hollywood
  15. *"The movie "Ghandi" on the Saturday leading up to Christmas? Obviously trying to be very "PC"."* - eleniblue The showing of *Gandhi* today was more of a "make good" before the end of the year than anything "P.C.". The last time the film was shown, also a weekend afternoon, there was a technical snafu that really screwed up the film. Today's showing was a typical TCM gesture to make things right. The same applies to the evening of "Ealing Comedies" coming up in the last week of December. That line-up was cancelled a few months ago to make room for a "TCM Remembers" tribute evening to Tony Curtis (I think). TCM is motivated by many things - but being "P.C." in December isn't one of them. Especially when every Friday evening this month has been turned over to "Holiday Films". Kyle In Hollywood p.s. - If *Christmas In Connecticutt* isn't on television, it is likely the decision of Warner Home Video to embargo it in the hopes of selling DVDs - not TCM. 16. *"I must have lost my head and misplaced it someplace earlier this morning."* - fxreyman My brain seldom gets out of neutral on weekend mornings so I can sympathize. I know we are comrades in arms. Kyle In Hollywood
  17. *"I actually included a theme of "heads chopped off" movies with my I see head people theme in Programming Challenge #14..."* - Fedya I should have known. It was you that paired *Our Daily Bread* and *Soylent Green* too, wasn't it? Nicely done with the "headless" group. When the subject was broached, my challenge instincts kicked in immediately. But I only got as far as *Salome*, a "guillotine" movie of some sort and then got stuck on Thelma Ritter declining to see what was in the hat box in *Rear Window* but couldn't go any further. Kyle In Hollywood
  18. *"First, why are marathons not always shown chronologically? For example, the Andy Hardy films, I think were shown in reverse order, which is confusing. Sometimes a marathon will jump around to different years in no particular order."* - infinite1 The "Andy Hardy" series in reverse order is the exception to the rule that TCM takes when presenting most series marathons. From my observation, TCM usually tries to maintain a chronological sequence to the films when presenting them in a block of programming. But if certain titles from a series are not currently leased to TCM, there will be "holes" in the filmography. As to the DVR question, hopefully someone with practical experience will chime in and offer some "TCM-tested" advice. And keep in mind, the vast majority of the Hal Roach materials are "TCM Premieres" - meaning they haven't been shown before - and the films can often be shorter or longer in length than TCM was told they would be. So running times in the schedules - TCM or Dish Network - can become obsolete very quickly. Perhaps someone who has studied the Hal Roach line-up more closely than I can offer some guidance on whether there exists potentials for schedule over-runs and how to best record the shorts in the liklihood it happens. (FredCDobbs is on Dish Network, I think.) But if the shorts are all "two-reelers", they should fit into a 30 minute time slot with no problems for running long. The same for "one-reelers" in a 15 minute time slot. Kyle In Hollywood
  19. *"Thanks again for searching out and posting all the great pics, Mr. In Hollywood!"* - rohanaka Thank you for saying so. I appreciate the recognition. And I am glad to know that others find these historical bits of ephemera interesting. Kyle In Hollywood Edited by: hlywdkjk on Dec 18, 2010 1:52 PM
  20. *"It's funny, you don't think too much of Hope and his draft status, maybe because he did so many USO tours during the war"* - C.Bogle Though it may not make any difference, when did Bob Hope naturalize? Before, during or after the war? Kyle In Hollywood
  21. *"OMG!!! Where do I begin???"* - markbeckuaf For a start, keep breathing - into a paper bag if you feel like you're passing out. Kyle In Hollywood
  22. *"Prince, If you feel like you're being bullied, report it."* - MMF This "Julie Marsden" act of yours is getting rather tiresome and is just as transparent. Kyle In Hollywood
  23. *"I don't ever recall TCM doing a theme as silly as nights with characters with their heads chopped off."* - Kinokima Me either. But I think there was a night of "Famous Shower Scenes" which included *Psycho*. *"I am not really sure what people are complaining about. Do they know what is actually on the schedule?"* Usually, no. But that doesn't stop them from --whining-- ...voicing their opinion. Kyle In Hollywood
  24. *"Without regularly focusing on certain themes or actors, TCM's programming would lack any sense of order or perspective. It would seem very scattershot."* - finance I agree. "Pure Genius" night last Sunday was...well, pure genius. Kyle In Hollywood
