  4. *"Reply to my email from Jon Wilkman, producer of "Movie Stars & Moguls", about the Sandler & Young picture."* - marktoll Wow! I'm impressed you wrote the producer and think it's great he wrote you back. It sounds like he is appropriately remorseful about the error - chagrined rather than angry or defensive. "I just love the TCM audience. No one else caught this." - Jon Wilkman But I am surprised that he seems some-what surprised in the level of knowledge found in the TCM audience. Hey! Who were you making the documentary for if not the very literate viewers of the channel presenting it? If he is only realizing this now, I wonder if he would done some things in the series differently? Kyle In Hollywood

  7. *"Today's "Flying Leathernecks", with incredible actual film footage of air combat, was introduced as a "yarn"."* - seattlesuzi What? There are intros to daytime films during the week now? Who is doing the intros? But if you are talking about the quick comments after the end of a movie accompany the list of titles coming up next, they've been a bit "off-beat" for quite awhile. The humor in many of them makes me grin. And a John Wayne WWII movie is definitely a "yarn". Kyle In Hollywood
  8. *"Quick, please, somebody invent a time machine. There aren't many things I'd like more than to walk into one of those theaters and watch the show."* - DougieB *"That set up for Wonder Bar looks awesome!"* - JackFavell So, even though the series hasn't focused on studio/exhibitor publicity at all and only tangentially on "movie palaces", you both approve of my including these images in the Gallery? If so, that's good as I have something else that wasn't a part of the series planned for posting soon. Kyle In Hollywood
  9. h3. "Moguls And Movie Stars" Miscellany _Materials from Paramount's "Belle Of The Nineties" (1934) before Title Change_ Window Card Poster Originally titled *It Ain't No Sin*, the title was changed at the last minute to *Belle Of The Nineties* in order to avoid running afoul with the Hays Office and the Motion Picture Code even though all the publicity campaign materials had been prepared. "New" Window Card ----------------------- Pressbook Cover ----------------------- (Publicity Still) Mae West shows off the new, smaller sound camera used on *It Ain't No Sin* and which will be used on all future Paramount Productions. The older camera used prior to the introduction of the new technology is on the left.

  11. *"Tom Rothman & FMC - I don't think it makes "more sense" to have modern studio executives introduce the studio's old films. Modern studio execs have no interest in film, film history, and art. They don't eat, breathe, and sleep it 24/7. The record speaks for itself. People like Rothman are only interested in the business. He may be the top executive and he might have a long history with Fox but he and 20th Century Fox today have absolutely nothing in common with the studio of the 10s, 20s, 30s, 40s, and 50s. If he cared about the prestige of his studio Fox wouldn't be in the shape it is right now. If anything, Rothman is among the least qualified people to talk about films."* - JonasEB I will say that his stand-ups intro-ing films (albeit a small number of titles) have improved over the past year or two. And he seemed very committed when he declared no one would ever be allowed to remake *All About Eve* - though people have asked numerous times. Gotta give him credit for that. I don't know that anyone at Time-Warner would say the same about *Casablanca*. Kyle In Hollywood

  13. *"And before everyone start raising their blood pressure over the "pajama party" aspect, many things change before the idea actually gets stuck to tape and some entertainment writers have been known to play with the facts or get them wrong."* - lzcutter That's the $64 question. But even if t isn't a "pajama party", I not convinced that a "classic" being introduced by Cher is appointment tv. With "TCM Underground", the series was never about Rob Zombie, it was all about the style or genre of films being presented and creating a place on the schedule for them. Cher likes "Classic Films". If she is going to be presenting films that are already a staple of the channel, then what's the point? To see Cher? No one watches "Masterpiece" on PBS because Alan Cummings is hosting it. But maybe she is being given a series to present something that _isn't_ on the schedule. Suddenly, I now have this fear Cher is intro-ing a series of over-the-top, "laughably bad" films from the 70s-80s. Those films, like *Staying Alive*, *Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band*, *Butterfly* or anything with Ali McGraw, have become "camp classics" to many people. Personally, I have bad memories of some of those films and wouldn't want to revisit them. *"Will TCM survive having Cher host an after hours program of films?"* Of course. Because you and I have complete faith and confidence in the persons responsible for creating what we know as TCM today. And because their bosses have shown the good judgement to embrace and celebrate that achievement. As I quoted in a different thread - "Once the audience knows what you are and likes what you are, embrace who you are." Michael Wright, Executive Vice President and Head of Programming for TBS, TNT and Turner Classic Movies The LATimes, November 2010 If that is what "the big guy" believes, we needn't fear that TCM is endangered in any way. 14. *"I agree with all the quotes in the ad for "Marty", but it seems as though they felt they had to sell the movie on the strength of its reviews."* DougieB Funny you mentioned the "review-style" poster for the film... I've consciously chosen to post U.S. posters for the films that are part of the "Moguls And Movie Stars" evenings. Given the context of the "Moguls", I thought it was historically important to show those posters rather than an international poster image even though a foreign poster may actually be more visually or artistically interesting. And for *Marty*, the "review" poster was all I could find. As long as I was using that style for *Marty*, I decided to post a "review-style" poster for *A Streetcar Named Desire* also. Even that film, with its Broadway history and Brando notoriety resorted to using "reviews" to sell the film. And I don't think "Streetcar" needed to be sold to the audience with reviews. But I wonder if the fact that the story had already been seen on televison with --Jack Palance-- Rod Steiger influenced how the producers advertised the film? 20. *"I see your point, but I am assuming that, like myself, people who are regular watchers of TCM and have been for years would by now know which movies TCM features on a regular basis and, therefore, the reason to suggest these movies is pointless since it is a question of time before TCM will schedule them again."* - CaptMatifou Not all the users of "Suggest A Movie" are "regular watchers" like yourself. There are many viewers who don't follow the TCM schedule too closely, download the monthly schedule from this website or plan their television viewing too far in advance. Nor is "time shifting" part of their regular routine. The "Suggest A Movie" page also seems to attract TCM viewers from various corners of the world who watch one of the many international versions of TCM (versions that usually include more recent films or even television series) but have no idea that they're requesting to the U.S./Canada staff. It may have been a few years since *Key Largo* was seen in Great Britain. It also can explain why there are some very out-of-the-prdinary requsts for films to be shown. I also believe the past six weeks of "Moguls And Movie Stars" has drawn many persons to the website for the first time who may wish to see some of the unscheduled films mentioned in the documentary series or other materials now running on TCM - like *Key Largo*. Someone requested *Little Caesar* today - which was shown November 22nd. I feel bad they missed it. If requesting to see it makes them feel better, great. And when it shows up again, they can point to it with pride saying "That's the movie I requested!" Whether it is a request for *Gone With The Wind* or for *The War Lord*, they are all equally noted by the TCM staff. Removing "the usual suspects" from the submissions doesn't mean the more unique titles that are asked for will carry any additional weight or importance to the staffers who read the requests. Distributor M.J. Winkler agreed to finance the "shorts" and the rest is history." ------------------------- _Oswald, The Lucky Rabbit_ alt="Disney_OswaldRabbit_c1927LRG" /> (c.1927) alt="Disney_OswaldRabbit_Africa1928LRG" /> (1928) It's fair to say that without Oswald the Lucky Rabbit, there would be no Mickey Mouse and no Walt Disney Company. In 1927, young Walt Disney created a new character for Universal, Oswald the Lucky Rabbit. But a budget dispute would force Disney to leave Universal and strike out on his own. With the rights to the popular character contracted to Universal, Walt Disney literally went back to the drawing board and created Mickey Mouse. Oswald would eventually fall into obscurity while Mickey Mouse would become one of the greatest cultural icons of all time. In 2006, The Walt Disney Company decided to bring Oswald the Rabbit home. Sportscaster Al Michaels, long the face of Disney/ABC's Monday Night Football, wanted to join the Universal/NBC Sports team. In an unorthodox move, Disney agreed to release Michaels from his contract in exchange for the return of Oswald the Lucky Rabbit to the Disney family. The deal was finalized and Oswald was back in the Disney fold. Edited by: hlywdkjk on Dec 5, 2010 9:41 AM
