  2. *"Chief, I think it's rights issues. The author of the book the film is based on, Antoine de Saint-Exup?ry, was shot down while on aerial recon work during WWII and lost at sea. Because neither his body or the plane were found, that has caused rights issues."* - lzcutter Thanks for the info. That's certainly an interesting story. *"i have a very scratchy dvd-r of night flight...it's a rather fascinating film."* - MissGoddess Cool. Because of the large cast, the director and the year of release, I've always thought the film was "Grand Hotel in the Skies". Would that description be far off? Kyle In Hollywood

  6. *"Dig the Stagecoach poster! I watched that in it's entirety the other night, it never grows old no matter how many times I've seen it! Love it!"* - markbeckuaf Thanks Mark. If you are bored some day and want to page through nearly 300 pages, you can find other posters for *Stagecoach* in this thread - including the original release one-sheet. But I am glad you are looking around here with regularity. I can use all the fans I can get. (And don't forget to check out the RKO "Bird Of Paradise" spread in the Auxiliary Gallery.) 9. *"Cher is 64 years old now. Marjorie Main was 64 years old when she made ?Ma and Pa Kettle at Home? in 1954, but Marjorie was honest about her age."* - FredCDobbs When Cher's bosoms droop all the way down to her waist just like Marjorie Main, then she can take on dowdy matronly roles. I don't understand this hostility, Dobbsy. Is this all brought out because of some latent issue over the song "Half-Breed"? Kyle In Hollywood

  11. *"Has every guest programmer that came on the show talked about their love of classic films beforehand? I think that is what is nice about the guest programmers discovering celebrities who love classic films as much as we do and hearing their thoughts on the film."* - kinokima I've heard tell of a very large file of clippings, interviews and transcripts in the hands of one TCM Staffer that documents everytime a "celebrity" would mention a "Classic Era" star or film or TCM itself. This file was the resource for connecting with potential Guest Programmers - especially in the early days of the series. Nowadays, it is just as common for a "fan" to contact TCM in hopes of being a Guest Programmer - as was the case with the singer Neco Case. (She was a wonderful G.P., by the way.) In the past few weeks, both Keith Richard and a fashion designer (name escapes me) mentioned spending evenings watching TCM. And so has Diahann Carroll. Here's another recent article where Cher mentions viewing TCM before bed every night - http://www.dailymail.co.uk/home/you/article-1332357/Cher-The-iconic-star-shows-sign-slowing-down.html Kyle In Hollywood
  12. *"I do remember a time when they used to show her tribute to Katharine Hepburn, which apparently was scuttled in favor of Anthony Hopkins' tribute."* - helenbaby Gosh! I think I remember that. If I recall it correctly, in it she speaks of of being on tour and watching certain old films in her hotel room to unwind after finishing the evening's performance. For some reason, *Stage Door* comes to mind. There may have even been a suitcase of films that she unpacked in each new city. I haven't thought of that piece for ages. It would be nice if TCM unearthed it and ran it again - especially if it is true that she is getting a "gig" on the channel. It would be a nice re-introduction of Cher to the audience. But I do question the idea of the program being a "pajama party". I don't know if that is the reporter's exaggerated reference/symbolism or the actual concept behind the series. Cher in "pajamas" - even a flannel nightie - while on TCM sounds more like a "stunt" than a serious addition to the schedule. Kyle In Hollywood
  13. Found this "bit" today in a search I did. I missed it when it was first posted in November. NYTimes, November 18 http://www.nytimes.com/2010/11/21/movies/21cher.html _An Ageless Diva of a Certain Age_ (excerpt) "Her Vegas show winds down in February. A tour will most likely follow, but Cher seemed more enthusiastic about a humbler project on the horizon. Sometime early next year she said, she will begin playing host to a pajama party of sorts on the Turner Classic Movies channel, introducing and reflecting on old favorites of her choosing, which will be shown after midnight. And thus will Cher don yet another new persona ? as a cocoalike balm for cinephile insomniacs." Really? That's..... interesting. I don't think it is replacing "TCM Underground" but sounds like a second "franchise" for the early hours. Perhaps on Saturday Nights? I'll try and be open-minded. Kyle In Hollywood

  17. *"You know I love the silent posters and ephemera, but these Showboat posters are about as fascinating as anything you have ever posted."* - JackFavell Thank you for saying that. It is quite the compliment coming from a silent fan such as you. I sort of just stumbled upon adding these to the Gallery. I have been searching out and gathering items that refer to specific parts of the documentary for this Gallery. But the other early musical posters were popular postings so I looked through my "archive" of materials and came across these three which I have had around for quite while. Thinking it over, I thought they deserved a place in this thread even if "Moguls And Movie Stars" didn't mention the film. They "fit". And they are quite beautiful too. Plus, with the descriptions, they do tell a "story" of the early sound days themselves. Posting items that are significant artifacts to the history of Hollywood and which expand upon the documentary's stories of the Studios pleases me. But it is greater that it has pleased you too. 18. *"My jaw is on the ground. The images are just staggeringly beautiful. Thank you for posting them, self-censoring and all!"* - lzcutter Glad you agree and you like these pages. And I even forgot one. I just added the two page painting of the flagbearer. Somehow I overlooked that one. I would love to own one or two of these Studio Books - but they sell for quite a bit of money, depending on the size, the films featured and the condition of the book. They can go for a few hundred dollars - or a few thousand dollars! It is also interesting to see what films never made it out of "pre-production" and which had title, cast or crew changes after being announced. Was there ever an RKO film made titled "Exposed"? Kyle In Hollywood

  20. This is probably the "wrong" night to ask this as the film is playing on TCM as I write this BUT... Because "Music" is going to be a big part of the 2011 TCM Classic Film Festival, would there be any interest around here in seeing *A Midsummer Night's Dream* on the big screen? I offer this up for a few reasons. One, the score is wonderfully arranged and perfectly used in the film. Two, the film had its genesis as a stage production at the Hollywood Bowl just a few blocks from the Festival epicenter on Hollywood Blvd. And three, the film won the Academy Award for Best Cinematography that year, which is no real surprise. The "surprise" is that the winner is the only person to have ever won an Oscar as a "write-in" candidate! (Yes, I guess the cinematographer wasn't an official nominee.) I've often thought the film was beautiful on television but am now intrigued to see this winning cinematography on a big screen. I think all these "bits" make the film an interesting candidate for a screening at the Film Festival. But I thought screening *King Kong* in the Chinese would be a big hit too so I may not be the best judge of what everyone else wants to see. Anyone else believe *A Midsummer's Night Dream* would be a nice addition to the schedule? Kyle In Hollywood
  21. *"Unseen since it was pulled from circulation in 1942, the all-star aerial drama NIGHT FLIGHT (?33), starring John Barrymore, Clark Gable and Helen Hayes, will re-emerge at the 2011 TCM Classic Film Festival."* *Night Flight* also stars Lionel Barrymore, Myrna Loy and Robert Montgomery, was produced by David O. Selznick and is directed by Clarence Brown. Glad to hear the film is "taking off" again. But does anyone know what the reason is/was behind keeping this film embargoed for nearly 70 years? 22. h3. "Moguls And Movie Stars" Miscellany Two Posters for Universal's "Show Boat" (1929) "Based on a book by Edna Ferber, which also spawned a successful Broadway show, this is the story of Magnolia Hawkes (Laura LaPlante), daughter of a nineteenth century showboat Captain. When her husband, inveterate gambler Gaylord Ravenal (Joseph Schildkraut) abandons her and her infant daughter, Magnolia is forced to use the talents earned on her father's boat to become a successful stage star. Like The Jazz Singer, this picture was released as a part-silent, part-talking version, retaining the song "Ol' Man River," and jettisoning all the rest of Jerome Kern and Oscar Hammerstein's popular songs." "The 1929 version of Show Boat was made as a silent film, but the studio panicked when they realized that because of the coming of sound, audiences might be expecting a talking picture version of the novel. So, several scenes were then reshot to include about thirty minutes of dialogue and singing. Because of the success of the stage musical, which was playing on Broadway at the same time that the film was being shot, a two-reel sound prologue, featuring several members of the stage cast singing five songs from the show, was also added, and the movie was released both as a part-talkie and as a silent film without the prologue. This special poster was produced to promote the sound prologue, and features Helen Morgan, who appeared in the stage version, but she doesn't actually appear in the main body of this film." ------------------------- Poster for Columbia Pictures Short Subject "Old Man Trouble" (1928) "A noted concert singer, actor and composer, Jules Bledsoe, enjoyed an operatic career in Europe and in the United States, where he sang with the Boston Symphony and the Municipal Opera Company of Cleveland. He is probably best known as an original member of the cast of "Show Boat", which premiered at the Ziegfeld Theater in 1927. Bledsoe created the role of Joe and sang the famous song "Ole Man River." In 1929 he repeated the role in the motion picture version of the story. This rare sheet is for a short subject which was a co-production of RCA-Victor and Columbia Pictures."
