  1. rainingviolets21 - When you are composing a message, do you "preview" the message? Are your lines of text still too long to read without scrolling back and forth in the preview mode? No one's lines of _text_ should cause a thread to expand the margins causing you to scroll back and forth to read a message. It is usually extra wide images - and long internet links - that cause a thread to become so wide that it can't be displayed without scrolling. When a wide image (for example) is posted that expands the margins of a thread, all the messages sharing that same page will have those same margins. So it is another poster (and that image file) that causes the margins to become so wide. It should never be simple text. The Forums have a word wrap function and will break up lines of text into an easily readable width. I always just type away until my thought is complete. But I will break "paragraphs" by using the enter key myself. If you are having trouble reading this thread without scrolling back and forth, then we need to change the resolution of your computer - or, as has been written already - change the size of the text in your browser. 2. OK. How did I end up in the Food Network Forums????????? Kyle In Hollywood
  3. *"And my attention span is pretty short lately, and I'm apt to doze at the drop of a hat."* - ydobon (I'm never gonna get used to writing that nick) OK Sleepy. "Under The Influence" is only thirty minutes long. And I believe that Quentin Tarantino must make positive references to *Meet Me In St. Louis** as the film follows the encore presentation of his interview. *MMISL* twice in one month. You better be pleased with that. To think that *The Marrying Kind* and *Meet Me In St. Louis* influenced Quentin Tarantino boggles my mind. Must be the park scene in one and the "wicked little child's" Trolly car accident in the other. I will say, I hope the "Under The Influence" sticks to the concept of having the guests speak about the classic films that influenced them. It was interesting to hear Pollack tell about seeing *An American In Paris* a half dozen times and perfectly describing Kelly's costume for the ballet sequences. But Sydney Pollack drifted off into a discussion of _his_ work more than I liked. I had heard some of these stories - like his affection for "unrequited love stories" - before. That might be Elvis Mitchell's fault. Or maybe that was a conscious decision made by the producer after the interview and after his death to make his "final in-depth interview" more personal. But I don't know for sure. *"And I'll be there for the next ."* Filmlover will be pleased to know that. It'll be his job this time to prod you into finishing. Kyle In Hollywood
  4. I am usually not one to tout upcoming selections on TCM but this is kinda special. The short film "The Dentist" starring W.C. Fields is scheduled Monday Night after the showing of *A Night At The Opera*. http://www.sensesofcinema.com/contents/cteq/03/29/the_dentist.html Fields is one "classic era" performer/comedian that is on the TCM schedule too infrequently so I thought it worthwhile to draw attention to this presentation. Ok. Carry on. Kyle In Hollywood
  5. *"Hubby changed the overall resolution which works on all the other websites but not this one."* I think the change in screen resolution may be the culprit. Try setting your display at a "smaller" resolution - which, I think, makes everything displayed on yout monitor larger. (That will also change how much of a webpage is displayed on your monitir at one time.) Kyle In Hollywood
  6. *"Seems like all we do is argue?"* - gagman66 Are you sure the two of you aren't from Iowa? "For a week at a time we can stand touchin' noses and never see eye to eye." Kyle In Hollywood
  7. Sunday, July 13^th^ *The Racket* (Thanks to "BackAlleyNoir") tonight on "Silent Sunday Nights" and (!!!!) *Wild Strawberries* tonight on "TCM Imports"
  8. *"As for Chaplin, TCM hasn't run CITY LIGHTS in years, His very best film."* - gagman66 Just in case this was missed the last time this subject came up. SUMMER UNDER THE STARS 2008 Saturday August 2^nd^ 4:15PM / 1:15 PM *City Lights* (1931) In this silent film, the Little Tramp tries to help a blind flower seller to see again. Cast: Charles Chaplin, Virginia Cherrill, Harry Myers. Dir: Charles Chaplin. BW-83 mins, TV-G Kyle In Hollywood
  9. > {quote:title=JakeHolman wrote:}{quote} > >"Kyle wrote..."only hinted at in the film." > > ? > > Message was edited by: JakeHolman 'casablancalover' and some others whiled away a few days in here a few months ago hypothesizing on what might have happened before Paris and after the plane took off - particularly in reference to some of the secondary characters. (Does Sam really stay behind to work for Ferrari, etc?) That's all. Maybe she can dig that thread out of the stacks. (Did we ever agree on whether Rick owned "The Belle Aurore"? - or however it is spelled?) Kyle In Hollywood
  10. *"Oh yeah, I'm totally grooving!!! October rocks!!!"* - markbeckhuaf It's about time. I've been wating for you to show up in here. I hope you have cleaned out that full recorder you had last month. So, *Rio Rita*, *Dixiana* or *Girl Crazy* ? Any prefernce or insight to share? Kyle In Hollywood
  11. *"I think Kyle in Hollywood posted a link to an article here on the website (Kyle is very good about hunting those down) about the differences in programming."* - lzcutter There isn't a web article about the various Intl. versions of TCM - just my own observations from hunting around and from helping Intl. viewers that have happened upon this place. (I think I last worte about it in the thread on "Request A Movie" when folks were wondering why people were asking to see contemporary movies.) As to the absence of certain films from the TCM schedule, I can't add anything important to that already said by 'tcmprogrammr'. But I look at these films - in their "restored" incarnations - as an asset of great value to the creative folks responsible for the film's enhanced condition. Yet for as much as these folks want their work seen, I am sure they are also going to be very protective of any exposure that would diminish the _value_ of that asset. I am sure there are people that believe allowing their "work" to be seen in 70 million homes in the US will make it less valuable in the long run. And to compensate for that "depreciation", they ask for ALOT of money to allow a channel like TCM access their asset. I can also see TCM standing firm against what they might see a "shakedown" in the fees requested for such films. They have budget issues and need to justify their expenditures. "Do we pay alot for a showing of film "X" or do put the money into the (also unseen) multiple "Lost And Found" features? (Films which became a valuable asset of TCM.) I am sure those are the types of decisions that have to be made. And sometimes quantitative concerns override qualitative. But I admire just how often TCM is able to choose "quality" with their programming decisions. Kyle In Hollywood
  12. > {quote:title=casablancalover wrote:}{quote} > There are so many on this forum who are insightful and rich with observation, I would like to see a 30 minute feature of them discussing movies, best as a theme or genre. TCM could show it 1 episode a month. Only if the first episode is you leading a discussion on all the backstories and "afterstories" in *Casablanca* that are only hinted at in the film. Kyle In Hollywood
  13. Saturday, July 12^th^ *The Postman Always Rings Twice* (Thanks to "BackAlleyNoir") tonight on "The Essentials"
  14. *"...) but I am really hoping that they can get The Moonspinners."* - lzcutter Oops. My Bad! But I have difficulty keeping straight all these blonde children and their Disney movies. Kyle In Hollywood
  15. *"She had a nice rapport with Robert Osborne and I especially enjoyed their discussion of "All About Eve"* - ccbaxter I am sad I missed that. I spaced out and missed all the intros - save for the final one on *Miracle Of Morgan's Creek" , but that intro was great. Sally Field "admitted" she didn't know this film - until she saw it on TCM for the first time a few years ago. Gosh. Even Oscar winners can tune in to TCM and learn something. Now I will never feel guilty for being "ignorant" again. Kyle ("As God is my witness") In Hollywood
  16. *"And I spotted a film that will give you and Kyle a laugh, remembering something I said the other night..."Pollyanna"* - filmlover Makes one wonder if there are any "surprises" left to be seen. Maybe *Summer Magic* ? Or that *Thomasina* film 'lzcutter' wants to see? As foir me, I am holding out for *Song Of The South*. Only showing _that_ could overtake *All About Eve* as the "best" premiere for the year. Kyle In Hollywood ps - Are you going to see *A Star Is Born* at the Arclight? (or has it shown already?)
  17. *"The reason for the RKO is that they are doing, "80th Anniversary of RKO Studios."* - filmlover That's also great news. I guess I am getting to be pretty literate on this "classic film" stuff if I could figure out all those titles were RKO pictures. What surprised me was seeing it there in October because isn't there a big Warner Brothers celebration planned for this fall too? (Or is that only on PBS?) *"And, yay, Carole Lombard is Star of the Month!"* And though I alluded to it in the "other" October listings thread, I will say it here too - "Yay for *Twentieth Century* which I believe has never been seen on TCM. (I was thinking that this film was the one "hole" in the "Ridin' The Rails" spotlight event a few months back.) That it is part of Lombard's "SOTM" line-up if fine by me - though it is and always will be "Barrymore's" film. *"The night of Jacques Tati is celebrating his 100th birthday."* That's interesting. I didn't know that. I look forward to seeing these for the first time in years. (And a first time ever for you, right?) But mostly I like the "pairing" of his films with some Keaton later in the evening - like I did in a past challenge. Yet I write all that "Challenge" stuff off as coincidence now. Otherwise I begin looking for Challenge ideas where there aren't any. I saw the line-up that is Rainn Wilson's GP night and couldn't for the life of me come up with a theme tying all those titles together, so it is nice to learn there really isn't any. And I also noticed the Korda line-up. (Did he make two versions of *Song Of India*?) But the best Korda for the month is Laughton's *Henry VIII* . Kyle in Hollywood
  18. *"TCM is showing some of the Paul Henreid films that I used as a part of my challenge..."* - Fredmill38 Hi Donna. Glad to know that is the case. Isn't it nice when that happens? I hope you have been well and wish you were around more often. Kyle In Hollywood
  19. *"Sorry, just couldn't resist!!!"* - Mlle. Minya That's OK. We all have our "Ben Mankiewicz" moments. kjk
  20. This is too cool! October 9^th^ TCM is showing _all four_ of Jacques Tati's classic films - including *Playtime* , *Mon Oncle* and *Mr. Hulot's Holiday*. And then follow them with a pair of Buster Keaton films. Well done! And is there some sort of RKO salute going on every Wednesday? Wednesdays each week seem to have 24 hours of RKO films scheduled. Other fun stuff - *Cheaper By The Dozen* with Clifton Webb and Myrna Loy, John Sayles' *Eight Men Out*, Alexander Korda's *Private Lives of Henry VIII* with Charles Laughton! and a premiere doc on Gangster films. WooHoo! Kyle In Hollywood
  21. OK all. It's up. Use the link posted earlier. And I hope all you Lombard fans will be happy. The 'premiere" on October 6^th^ made _me_ gasp. TCM finally shows _my_ favorite Lombard film. Kyle In Hollywood
  22. I've only looked at October 1^st^ so far and al I want to know... Is Octoberr 1^st^ 'markbeckhuaf's birthday? He gotta a nice "gift" that day and certainly is going to be groovin'! Wheeler & Woolsey all morning. Kyle In Hollywood Message was edited by: hlywdkjk
  23. *"It's part of the way we get our 'scarlet woman' reputation! "Wokka wokka wokka."* - Minya Ms. Pacman was a 'scarlet woman"? Who knew? Kyle (remembers that "eating" sound very well) In Hollywood
