  1. The TCM "Private Screenings" episode with Charlton Heston is scheduled for this Monday morning, April 7^th^ followed by a showing of *The Wreck Of The Mary Deare*. This was already on the schedule. But I would bet that an evening will be set aside to remember Charlton Heston before the end of the month also. Kyle In Hollywood
  2. *"I just pulled my tape of it and looked at it to see if I can discern the date. I couldn't. It has the TCM opening of the orchestra playing and no Robert Osborne introduction."* - molo14 Funny to learn it has been around the TCM vaults so long. Thanks for looking at your recording and trying to place a date to the showing. I guess it is just an added "extra" to the "On Demand" line-up for the month - like the films *Facts Of Life* and *Alias Jesse James* which are also available. (or are those part of the regular TCM schedule? Has there been a Bob Hope night lately?) Kyle In Hollywood
  3. *"I receive TCM on satellite dish. Some pay-per-view is available. Is TCM on Demand available and if so, could you tell me where to look? I appreciate it."* - tobitz I don't know much of anything about satellite service but others here who use satellite for TCM (DishNetwork or DirectTV) have said that the "On Demand" service isn't available to them. Sorry. Kyle In Hollywood
  4. *"... cheapo, sleazo, crapo."* I thought "Gummo" was the lost Marx Brother. Who knew there were three more? kjk
  5. *"I'm cursed with dial-up, so I presume TCM on Demand is out of the question."* - tobitz Hi 'tobitz' - "TCM On Demand" is a service for digital cable subscribers - not internet users - that is similar to "pay-per-view" except that it is all free. If you can receive digital cable, you should check and see if you can also get the "On Demand" service. Kyle In Hollywood
  6. *"...I saw kriegerg69 had a post pointing out that shorts are now listed on the monthly schedules. The Gay Parisian is not scheduled with the June showing of An American in Paris, and is not currently scheduled at all."* - tobitz Don't fret yet, 'tobitz'. The persons responsible for scheduling the shorts and promos, etc. that appear between films work on a much shorter time frame than the film programmers. The short films only get added to the listings about a week to ten days before their appearance on the channel. If you look at the April listings you'll see that the last half of the month has had no short films added to the line-up yet. But they'll show up in the listings around the Fifteenth. So, check the June schedule near the beginning of the month to see what shorts might bookend *An American In Paris*. It is possible "The Gay Parisienne* could be shown again. TCM does have "favorite" shorts to accompany certain films. For a long time, showings of *On The Town* were often accompanied with a James FitzPatrick "TravelTalk" on "Mighty Manhattan". 7. *"Wow Kyle, you took all mine (I only had 2) before I had a chance to post!"* - mr6666 What? You're a fan of *Dig That Uranium!* too? Atta boy! Sorry I took the wind out of your sails. I thought leaving out casinos would have made it really difficult to find titles. From now on I promise not to be a title hog. Kyle In Hollywood
  8. Thanks CSJr and Arkadin. *"As others have said "The Red Balloon" has aired a few times in the past. I recorded it a few years back."* - molo14 Really? TCM has shown *The Red Balloon* before? I never noticed. Maybe it was part of the "Shorts Circuit" schedule when TCM saluted short films in 2006. (Nope. Just looked here - http://www.tcm.com/thismonth/article/?cid=145537 ) Ben Mankiewicz does the "On Demand" intro/outro and does a good job on letting one know why this short is so cherished and important. (It won an Oscar - for its Screenplay!) I guess I shouldn't be too surprised that it could have slipped by my radar. Many things do. But on the off chance that the film is still to be shown in April, there is a 35 minute window open between the Silent Sunday Night feature and the TCM Import selection on April 20^th^. And I have no recollection of *Lost In Pajamas*. Sounds charming. I, too, spent many an afternoon wandering in the woods as a kid. But usually home in time to see the matinee movie on tv. (You know. The one with "Dialing For Dollars" stuck in the middle. Gawd. I am surprised I can remember THAT but not something from only a year or two ago.) I wonder if many film lovers our age can trace our appreciation of the medium to seeing those "Children's International Film Festival" broadcasts? I have read many classical music lovers attribute their interest in the genre to Leonard Bernstein's "Young People's Concerts" on television. Kyle In Hollywood (BTW - when I first got expanded cable ten to fifteen years ago, Starz Channel (I think. Or maybe it was TLC.) used to show "Kukla, Fran and Ollie" episodes in the early morning hours. Sadly, they were shows from the Sevnties and were nothing like those that I remembered seeing in the Sixties.)
  9. Hi there. I was wondering when you would announce the next stop on our itinerary. *"So here's a question. Are there any movies set in Nevada that have nothing at all to do with casinos?"* - skimpole How's these? *The Misfits* - Clark Gable, Marilyn Monroe, Montgomery Clift dir: John Huston http://www.tcm.com/tcmdb/title.jsp?stid=19301 "While staying at Isabelle Steers' roominghouse in Reno, newly-divorced showgirl Roslyn Taber meets Gay Langland, a ruggedly independent, aging cowboy." *Wild Is The Wind* - Anthony Quinn, Anna Magnani dir: George Cukor http://www.tcm.com/tcmdb/title/title.jsp?stid=95863 "When Gino, a wealthy but lonely sheep rancher in Nevada, decides to marry his deceased wife's sister Gioia, she emigrates from Italy and immediately moves into her new husband's home." *The Ox-Bow Incident* - Henry Fonda, Dana Andrews dir: William A Wellmann http://www.tcm.com/tcmdb/title.jsp?stid=434290 "In 1885, cattlemen Gil Carter and Art Croft travel from their small ranch to the nearby town of Bridger's Wells, Nevada, after the winter round-up." *Kiss Me Stupid* - Dean Martin, Kim Novak dir: Billy Wilder http://www.tcm.com/tcmdb/title.jsp?stid=17189 "Dino, a pop vocalist who is notorious for his heavy drinking and lecherous behavior, concludes a Las Vegas nightclub engagement and heads for Hollywood in his Italian sportscar. A detour on the highway forces him to drive through Climax, Nevada..." *The Spider Woman Strikes Back* - Gale Sondergaard, Brenda Joyce, Kirby Grant http://www.tcm.com/tcmdb/title.jsp?stid=91064 "Jean Kingsley arrives in the rural town of Domingo, Nevada, to take up a new job as companion to blind scientific researcher Zenobia Dollard. At the train station Jean is surprised to run into Hal Wentley, a college beau, who still cherishes hopes about a relationship with her." *Driftwood* - Natalie Wood, Dean Jagger, Ruth Warrick dir: Alan Dwan http://www.tcm.com/tcmdb/title.jsp?stid=73666 "At a church in Bullfrog Springs, Nevada, young Jenny Hollingsworth weeps as her grandfather and sole guardian, a frail country reverend, dies of old age. When night falls, a plane from the nearby flight academy crashes, and a collie that was traveling on the plane befriends Jenny." *Carolin Cannonball* - Judy Canova, Sig Ruman, Jack Kruschen http://www.tcm.com/tcmdb/title/title.jsp?stid=70350 "...scientists in the United States secretly launch the XGMI, the first atomic-powered guided missile. Soon after the launch, three foreign agents, Otto, Stefan and Hogar, seize radio control of the missile, but lose their navigational ability when their equipment malfunctions. After XGMI crashes in the Nevada desert, the spies, hoping to retrieve the rocket for their country, hurry there. Posing as uranium prospectors, they board the rickety "Carolina Cannonball," a steam-driven streetcar that runs along a spur between a deserted whistle stop at a remote railroad junction and the town of Roaring Gulch." and one of my favorites - *Dig That Uranium* - The Bowery Boys http://www.tcm.com/tcmdb/title.jsp?stid=73113 "In the Bowery in New York City, longtime friends Horace DeBussy "Sach" Jones, Terence Aloysius "Slip" Mahoney, Butch and Chuck regularly gather at Louie Dumbrowski's soda shop. One day, Sach brings in another old friend, Shifty Robertson, who claims he is now a wealthy uranium mine owner. Although Shifty offers no explanation, he is anxious to sell the deed to his Little Daisy mine. Slip pressures Louie into buying the deed, after which Shifty runs from the shop. Some time later, the Bowery friends arrive in Panther Pass, Nevada, where their jalopy breaks down." Kyle In Hollywood
  10. Scrolling through the new TCM "On Demand" titles for the weekend and what should appear but the classic short film *The Red Balloon*. In the past, the "On Demand" titles always have correlated with films that have been shown on TCM in the recent past - or, occasionally, are coming up during the current month. Did TCM present *The Red Balloon recently and I missed it? Or is it coming up later in the month? Has anyone heard about a showing on TCM? I find it strange that TCM would have this film available in its library right now and be so quiet about presenting it. I know it is a "unique" _short_ film (38 min) but I think it is an important acquisition for TCM. It would be a pity if it is/was dropped into the schedule without any fanfare As viewer of "The Children's International Film Festival" series as a kid (Kuklka,Fran and Ollie!), seeing *The Red Balloon* title on my TV certainly brought back fond memories of Saturday Mornings long gone. Kyle (now hoping for *Skinny And Fatty*) In Hollywood
  11. Just a quick post to remind everyone that the TCM schedule has been changed for the evening of April 4^th^ to honor the late Richard Widmark - http://www.tcm.com/movienews/index/?cid=197318 _Friday, April 4th_ 8:00 pm *ALVAREZ KELLY* 10:00 pm *TAKE THE HIGH GROUND* 12:00 am *THE TUNNEL OF LOVE* And the schedule has also been changed for the evening of April 20^th^ to honor the late director Jules Dassin - http://www.tcm.com/movienews/index/?cid=197814 _Sunday, April 20th_ 8:00 PM *Naked City* 9:45 PM *Topkapi* Kyle In Hollywood
  12. *"What does it say that I have posted the most on this thread? Hmmm, I wonder."* - FrankGrimes Oh great. Now you're counting posts too. Actually, I am beginning to feel bad about how this thread has "soured" lately. I was only doing some friendly teasing. Suddenly all these women began acting out on their male revenge fantasies. A few more days and I fear this thread will enter Stephen King territory. First there'll be the *Misery* stage and then *Carrie*. I'll probably be left to lead the *Stand By Me* expedition to find the body. Kyle In The Overlook Hotel
  13. *"I'm thinking of movies that take place in Nebraska, not movies that were filmed there."* I doubt that anyone will come up with anything as important as *Boy's Town* but here are a few others to consider - *Boy's Don't Cry* - Hillary Swank http://www.tcm.com/tcmdb/title.jsp?stid=442811 "In Falls City, Nebraska, Brandon Teena was a newcomer with a future who had the small rural community enchanted." *The Conquerors* - Richard Dix, Ann Harding. dir: William A Wellmann http://www.tcm.com/tcmdb/title.jsp?stid=5755 "During the economic prosperity of 1873, New York bank clerk Roger Standish dreams of marrying his boss's daughter, Carolyn Ogden. The broke but happy newlyweds leave New York to start fresh in the West, but while in Nebraska are ambushed by outlaws. In the struggle, Roger is shot, then is taken to the nearest town, Fort Allen, to be treated by Dr. Daniel Blake, an alcoholic but competent physician." *Western Union* - Robert Young, Randolph Scott. dir: Fritz Lang http://www.tcm.com/tcmdb/title.jsp?stid=95377 "In 1861, Western Union engineer Edward Creighton is surveying a telegraph line when he is severely wounded in an accident. Bank robber Vance Shaw, on the run from a posse, comes upon Creighton and saves his life while eluding his pursuers. After Creighton recovers, he returns to Omaha, Nebraska, where he intends to build a telegraph line to Salt Lake City, Utah." Kyle In Hollywood
  14. I'm beginning to think this thread is going to overtake "Any Gary Cooper Fans" someday. Makes one wonder. Kyle In Hollywood
  15. *"There's a lot of softening up going on around here and that has me fearing the blade."* - FrankGrimes That I can understand. It's the way you freak out over the color red that has me worried most. kjk
  16. Hi Minya - Sorry to hear your work week has been like checking in to the Bates Motel. Here's hoping the second day of April is more Hotel California. Kyle In Hollywood
  17. *"wanna smell my boutonniere?" "Why soitanly! "* *"I'm giddy... and vulnerable to shenanigans."* Vulnerable? Brow-beaten, maybe. But never "vulnerable". Right about now I'm willing to bet you'd "pull my finger" if asked. Kyle In Hollywood
  18. 'butterscotchgreer' - Happy to hear you liked the baseball poster. Be careful what you say about *Psycho* though. It's one of FrankGrimes' mother's favorites. Kyle (you're welcome, BSG!) In Hollywood
  19. *"Is there an April Fools joke attached to your poster for today..."* - FrankGrimes Skittish, are we? Can't believe that I would just post a nice image for today without there being an "exploding cigar" hidden somewhere also? Boy, that hurts. Kyle (wanna smell my boutonniere?) In Hollywood
  20. *"I'm looking forward to May's programming ..."* - MattHelm Gosh. It's only April 1^st^. Is the programming _this_ month so terrible that you're left just waiting for May to arrive? I am not too excited about Frank Sinatra month - but my mother is. Kyle (not too excited about Hedy Lamarr either) In Hollywood
