"I see you are back at it again, Kiss-Up Kyle." I guess I missed that Helen Hayes appreciation thread. Thanks for letting me know. Watch This Space. kjk -
"S&P issues?" Sure. This isn't anything new. While TCM won't edit films for content, they will reject entire films outright due to content "unacceptable" to a non-subscription cable channel. Certain films ("R" rated, etc.) can be shown only after 9pm PST. And I would bet that a film's nudity and/or language issues are acceptable only if the context is "correct" (i.e. Non-titlating, violent or lacivious.) The S & P department would make those decisions. Kyle In Hollywood

"Loved "Kundun", rememinded me of "Last Emperor" which was excellent also." - mr6666 Ageed. And neither of these films show up on other channels with any regularity - if at all. I know I have been waiting a long time to see Atlantic City. And I was not disappointed. So, "thanks TCM" from me also. Kyle In Hollywood

marcco44 & FrankGrimes - That is a petty nice Rebecca poster - though the original scanner had a bit ot trouble "stitching" the image together and matching the color quality from the two separate scans of the total image. mr6666 - Nope. No political film posters for Super-Duper Tuesday. Maybe for Election Day in November. Glad to know you all are keeping an eye on this thread and enjoying it. Kyle In Hollywood -

"Pleeeeeeeeeeeze don't dumb down TCM just to make it "accessible to" or "popular with" those who don't appreciate classic films or they'd already be tuning in. Pandering to the lowest common denominator only spoils it for the rest of us." - otterhere I watched Atlantic City on Saturday night and Kundun on Sunday night. The two are very, very good films. Both films were remarkably "classic" in their presentaion and themes. Those who didn't catch them missed two wonderful films. And everything about these films was "intelligent". Neither of these films "dumbed down" TCM nor is their presence on the TCM schedule an attempt to pander to new "unsophisticated" viewers. Presenting a film on the story of the life and exile of the Dalai Lama isn't how you attract the "lowest-comon denominator" audience. You'd do that by showing Porky's, Kentucky Fried Movie or (God help us!) The Happy Hooker Goes To Washington. TCM isn't interested in attracting a mindless mass audience. Such an audience has no value to a channel without advertising. TCM does need to cultivate a stable audience of commited viewers that is sizable enough to ensure the channel can continue to present all the types of films they show. Showing Kundun just may make a person curious enough to want to see The Good Earth, Lost Horizon or Thirty Seconds Over Tokyo. Showing Atlantic City may make a person interested in seeing Force Of Evil, The Asphalt Jungle or Burt Lancaster's The Killers. Those are the films for which TCM is trying to create a new audience. Whatever one thinks of the more recent films on the schedule, they are chosen to attract "new" viewers to the channel who, hopefully, will return again and again. If the "aging" viewers of TCM aren't replaced as they die off, the channel won't be around to show anything - especially the films of the studio era. If that comes to pass, film lovers of all eras will be the poorer. Kyle In Hollywood

"I love this thread!!! Kyle I love the Hard to Handle poster." Hi Kim. Glad you are enjoying it. "Did you get a copy of Picture Show?" Yes. It is on my bookshelf right next to my copy of "The Absolut Book" which contains many of the Absolut Vodka Bottle-shaped advertisements popular in the 70s, 80s and 90s. Kyle In Hollywood -
For those who have "TCM On Demand" available on their cable systems, The Broadway Melody is one of the selections this month. And it sounds like I need to check it out. Kyle In Hollywood

Someone was thoughtful enough to send me a PM (and not correct me in this thread) to tell me it is Anna Paquin who is in The Piano and not Kirsten Dunst. Under any name, the young co-star of Holly Hunter is exceptional. Kyle In Hollywood

A co-worker once referred to Barbara Stanwyck as being a "Betty". From what I have been able to determine, it is a reference to Betty and Veronica of the Archie comics. (Though there is a possibilty it may also refer to Betty Rubble of "The Flintstones".) Through the discussion I discerned that "Betty" is meant as a flattering term used by a guy to describe an attractive woman who is pretty enough that he would want to date her - as compared to best looking woman in the room (also being the most "threaetening") who a guy would only want to bed. As to Miss Stanwyk, I kinda think that is a great description. Kyle In Hollywood

MOre than once in the years past Robert Osborne has stated his belief that this film (Libeled Lady) should have won the Best Picture Oscar over the fictionalized The Great Ziegfeld. Definitely make an effort to see it if you have somehow missed it in the past. Kyle In Hollywood

"Every time any classic movie fan posts their opinion about new movies being shown on Turner CLASSIC Movies, you try to make them feel unwanted and like they are on the wrong message board." Poppycock! Don't try to make this about me. I have never tried to drive anyone from these Message Boards. I am tolerant of anyone's presence here as long as they comport themselves like adults. I lay out the facts about TCM for those who are willing to read it and accept it. I don't place judgement on those that come here looking for an explanation for contemporary films on TCM. And you know the rest so I won't bother posting it all over again. I enjoy the channel for what it is and what it has always been - which is one and the same. If I didn't, I'd stop watching it. "But they are NOT wrong and they are NOT on the wrong message board." If one refuses to accept the truth, I suppose they could still be considered "right". But what good is certaintude in a falsehood? "I'm paying for Turner CLASSIC Movies, and classics are mostly from the '20s through the '50s, and mostly in the '30s and '40s." Maybe I should be disppointed in "TNT" becuase I don't see "explosions" every ten minutes, that the Hallmark Channel doesn't send me Greeting Cards and that I don't breathe any easier if I watch the Oxygen Channel. Every evening for "31 Days" is devoted to a specific decade of the Eighty-Year History of the Academy Awards. So, while I am enjoying Quiz Show and hope I enjoy Kundun tonight, tomorrow is devoted to films of the first decade of the Oscars, followed Tuesday by an evening devoted to the 40s, etc. Every decade is getting equal treatment so one shouldn't find that "classics" are getting shunted aside. As to Disney's The Black Hole yesterday (and Hook next weekend, among other titles), I find it encouraging that TCM is showing films during the afternoon that families can watch with their children. Is that such a terrible thing? Kyle In Hollywood

"I am still confused about where to post as I don't want this to happen again." - bio47 I am not one who participates in the Trivia Forum but my impression has always been that the Forum is for any sort of guessing game or brain challenges that members want to create Because you were offering up your questions as a game for everyone (and you already knew the answers yourself), they were perfectly fine in the Trivia Forums. But it is no breach of etiquette if they appear somewhere else. But if you are offering open-minded, opinion questions, then they are better suited for Hot Topics or General Discussions. Either way, glad you are a new member and enjoying yourself "passing the time recuperating in the damned cold". Kyle In Hollywood

Are you certain your thread was "moved"? In all the years I have been here, I have never seen that happen to someone's post/thread. Which thread are do you think was moved? Kyle In Hollywood

"As for missing parts of posts--It doesn't seem that anyone has figured out that mystery." I didn't know that this was still "unknown". In many (most?) cases, the problem lies in having a a "space" at the very start of a line or paragraph. For whatever reason, a hit on the spacebar at the start of a line of text causes the line that follows to become "hidden" when posted. (This may also apply to hits on the "tab" key.) Removing an errant space at the begininng of the line will cause the text to appear as intended when posted. Some folks try to indent lines of text with multiple hits on the space bar. As far as I know, there is no method of creating indentation to text in these Forums. Hope this is helpful for those of you whose thoughts have been seemingly evaporating at random. Kyle In Hollywood

Say all you bloggers. Have any of you checked out the "gift" TCM has given you this month? It's a "Video Jukebox" for the "31 Days..." event that bloggers can put on their site. You can find more info (which you all will probably understand better than I) here - http://www.tcm.com/redirects/link/?cid=193269 Kyle In Hollywood (I also hear you can get text messages from Robert Osborne this month too. Boy, do I feel like a Luddite about now.)
