I just looked and we have May Guest Programmer Tim Roth to thank for scheduling David Lean's *Hobson's Choice* with Charles Laughton. Wonderful!
He deserves a big "thank you".
h3. Thank You

*"I sense this is morphing into the Bill Maher thread. Maybe he should select a movie in which he starred..."* - scsu1975
My first thought when you posted *The Pope Must Die!* was "Did he star in that?".
But after all the Guest programmers over the years, I can only think of two that chose films in which they starred or directed - Jack Klugman selected *12 Angry Men* (A memorable discussion) and Charles Grodin chose *Movers And Shakers* (A very forgettable evening.)
But it looks like Robert Osborne's circle of "friends" from which he selects the Guest Programmers has been expanded. That's a great thing. (Or aren't they referred to as "his friends" in the promo anymore?)
Gotta go look at what films Tim Roth chose for May.

I like Bill Maher. "New Rules" was always good for a laugh. But I watched very little HBO otherwise. Same for Showtime. Dumped that too.
When I first heard about the "John Adams" series, I was interested. Then I heard it was (something like) seven parts! I thought the 3-hour PBS documentary on John & Abigail Adams a few years ago was already too long. But my executive chef at work has been watching it - and finally learning and understanding how remarkable the creation of this nation was. That's a good thing.

*"I certainly wouldn't think of Bill Maher as a "My Fair Lady" fan."*
Me either. *Pygmalion* maybe. But not *My Fair Lady*
I kinda thought he choose some "pot smokers" fave like *2001: A Space Odyssey*. (Or was that more of an "acid trip" favorite?)

*"I hear Pollack is in bad health..."* - SSOS
That's surprising. I just saw him in *Michael Clayton*. But I suppose that was filmed a year ago. Lots can happen in 12 months.
(I've never understood why, as a producer of *Michael Clayton*, he would cast himself in such a substantial role. Such casting was unique when he did it in *Tootsie*. Now it seems vain.)
I also saw a film he made about the architect Frank Gehry - and the Walt Disny Concert Hall. A very personal piece of work (He is in the film alot himself) and a big fan of Gehry's. Quite interesting.

*"No doubt he (Bill Maher) will choose The Pope Must Die"* - scsu1975
I dropped HBO a few months back. Has he been on an "anti-pontiff" rant lately?

Woo Hoo!
Good find, SSOS.
I'm really excited for some of the Guest Programmers - John Singleton? Sure.. But Bill Maher? Whodathunk?
But the line-up of interviewees for the new series with Elvis Mitchell is amazing! Joan Allen. Quentin Tarantino. Richard Gere. Bill Murray. Each talking about classic films and how they influenced their lives and work. (I hope 'mickeeteeze' is reading this.)
And "kudos" to whoever re-imagined "Funday Night At The Movies" into "Essentials Jr." (No offense Tom Kenny.)

*"Has anyone heard from "sugarpuss?"
Not I.
And I, too, am a bit concerned. She can disappear from these parts for a month and I woldn't worry a bit. But her own blog? That's something different.
I'll see if I can find a way to roust her. I think there is an email address on her blog - somewhere.

*"What major city DOESN"T have some run-down areas AND some well-kept areas? I'm bitter."*
sandykaypax
Well, if it is any consolation, I _do_ know there are some bright and charming people living in the Cleveland area - even when they are "bitter" on occasion.
Lord knows, I couldn't make the same claim about the Real Housewives living in beautiful Orange County.

It does sound fun, doesn't it? And you can catch it NEXT Wednesday night on TCM.

*"It's hard to believe that there aren't any better movies that take place there."*
I know that the "Hollywood, My Hometown" piece about *A Christmas Story" is all about that movie being filmed there but I can't verify that Cleveland - or another city in Ohio - is the "setting" for the film. Anyone else know?

*"So why are you shhshing us, Shhhshy? You are so dramatic."* - FrankGrimes
I didn't "shhh" _anyone_ . I just asked that no one run and tell her that I brought it up again. You haven't endured the Monument Valley Travelogue yet. Next thing ya know I'll be dragged off to watch the "Cavalry Trilogy".
*"I wish you'd follow my lead and just speak it straight. I'm always on the level."*
Right. You're tongue is as forked as the rivers in SteelTown.
*"You talk tough when it comes to not caring about what Lynn thinks..."*
But I _do_ care about what Lynn thinks. It's you that walks around here pretending to be *The Wild One*. I'll admit that takes guts - when you're riding a Big Wheel.

Now go vote!

*"I am extremely disappointed that TCM has only offered these films very late at night. The afore mentioned Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam with Ashwira Rai would be a perfect film to show some weekend afternoon."*
Hi 'TikiSoo'.
In June 2003 TCM devoted every Thursday Night to films from "Bollywood". You can read all about it here - http://www.tcm.com/thismonth/article?cid=27940
I didn't watch any of the films that year but now wish I had. I saw *Lagaan* after this series ran and then knew I missed some interesting fare.

I caught the *Death Of A Salesman* "link" last night too. That makes sense. Though it would be odd if CBS didn't have the clip and they had to approach Farentino for it.
In the program Wilder also alludes to having an impolite description of Joseph Levine but which he keeps to himself "out of respect". Anyone have some info on why that may be?

*"The California Kid may be headed for a hangin'. I'd like to help ya out, pardner, but you've done me wrong too many times. You're on your own, son."* - FrankGrimes
How quickly they turn.
But I ain't afraid. You're not the only one who can play Will Kane around here, ya know. Though now I'll have to recruit someone else to help me with my plan for "May 7th".
And my indifference to Wayne and Westerns isn't exactly "news" to 'lzcutter'. She knows I'd rather discuss *Young Mr. Lincoln* than *Rio Grande*. Besides, it's not like I brushed off William A. Wellmann. (Which I kinda did once. She humored me.)
*"That's a rather strange poster for "Red River"."*
Duh! It's Danish. Have you seen their furniture?

I've watched the program twice (it's now available "On Demand") and I am now recording it for a TCM-less co-worker. I've enjoyed it more each time.
But I am now utterly curious about one of the credits at the very end of the program. There, along with all the producers, co-producers and "thank you's" to TCM execs there is a title card that reads (something like) -
"A special Thank You to James Farentino"
James Farentino? I wonder "why?" and what "role" the actor James Farentino had in this production.
Any ideas? Hypotheses? Wild Guesses?

*"I am not a big Western fan and thus not a big John Wayne fan..."* - Minya
Me either (please don't tell 'lzcutter') but I do enjoy watching *Red River* - even if it is "Mutiny On The Prairie". It is strange seeing an "evil" John Wayne though.

Well then. I guess it will be a giftcard from Pier 1. Or maybe a used mah jong set.

*"I came across a unique screen name once in a blue moon Guest..."* - hamradio
Hello 'ham'.
I think the preponderance of postings by "Guest" is the result of poster's account having been deleted. Sometime between 2003 and 2005, the Message Boards underwent a major overhaul and most members were "forced" to register anew with new "names". (This is also why poster 'SandyK' became 'sandykaypax'.) It was days before one could re-activate an existing account - if at all - so alot of members just registered with new monikers. I think I tried to activate an account I had already started but couldn't get it to work so I started anew.
So while the postings of former members are still available to be read, their accounts no longer exist. The forum software assigns the posting to "Guest". And "Guest" is used for every non-existent account. All those "Guest"s are multiple former users.
