  1. "It's driving me crazy because I know I know that guy's voice from somewhere, but I can't figure out from where."

Fear not. A lot of people have been driven to distraction trying to place that disembodied voice.

Obviously, you're trying to place the male narrator (Joan Cusack narrates female "What A Character" spots.). James Cromwell is the male narrator. And if that still doesn't "ring a bell", think Farmer Hoggett in Babe.

  2. "Mary Astor is hilarious in a supporting role."

Yes she is. And I just watched a doc on "The Rockefellers" and found it amusing how much of that "family" became integrated into the "Hackensacker" family. (The notebook of expenditures, for example.)

If Mary Astor has never been Star Of The Month, she cerainly should be. Are there enough starring roles to make it work?

  3. I was all set to throw my lot in with Key Largo and then read the nomination of The Palm Beach Story. OOoohh. That's a tough choice.

And then I remembered that The Yearling also takes place in Florida.

I can't pick just one from those three. Each of them deserves to be included.

  4. "Is everyone stumped by Delaware? I sure am."

Well, I think I have a confessional error to admit to.

A few "Programming Challenges" back, I saluted Independence Day with a day long set of films with each film set in what were the original 13 Colonies or signatories to the Declaration Of Independence. For the theme I used the silent film Janice Meredith which is a Revolutionary War story. I think the film came up on a keyword search at IMDB.

But looking at the synopsis here at the tcmdatabase, the "Delaware" keyword actually refers to the "Delaware River" - which I don't think is actually in Delaware. I think the setting for the film is actually Massachusettes. Maybe someone else can confirm it.

It just ocurred to me - Senator Joe Biden of Delaware hosted a favorite film on TCM in 2000 - or 2004 - and I believe he chose Dead Poet's Society because of its Delaware setting. I am off to work so maybe someone can confirm if that is the case.

  5. I am sooo disappointed to hear that this film is sooo bad. It was one of the few "Psych 101" films that sounded interesting. I passed on watching it last night only because it is available "On Demand" this week so I planned on watching it at my leisure.

I guess my "valuable" leisure will be better spent elsewhere.

  6. "Ok, I would say the best movie that takes place in Colorado would be "The Shining." Any other nominees?"

I'd like to submit The Unsinkable Molly Brown.

"All right then. Next up Connecticut."

And I'd like to offer for your consideration two pieces / three films from Eugene O'Neill -

Ah, Wilderness! (1935) and it's musical version Summer Holiday (1948)

    or

Long Day's Journey Into Night (1962)

  7. just wondering -

Is there something that "connects" the films Our Dancing Daughters, Our Modern Maidens and Our Blushing Brides other than they each star Joan Crawford?

The titles sure sound like they are part of a "trilogy". If not, was there any other reason the films were given such similar titles?

    Anyone know?

  8. OK, you all are on notice.

Anyone dissing the glorious '70s is gonna have to answer to me.

    'cause

You don't tug on Superman's cape.

You don't take candy from a child

You don't pull the mask off the ol' Lone Ranger

and you don't mess around with Kyle.

ps - How can you not like a film with a line like "So, you wanna peel the tomato?"

  9. "But back to the topic at hand; that perfectly awful young girl... Doesn't RO look happy, though???"

I don't know. Last fall, RO looked pretty happy sitting across from Cybill Shepard and Tracy Ullmann too. Come to think of it, last November he also looked pretty happy across from Whoopi Goldberg, Charles Busch and Danny DeVito.

And they all expressed excitement to be sitting across from him.

(or, in the case of Whoopi Goldberg, slightly more than just excited)

  10. "I hope everyone caught her "comment" that it'll be nice to see all the movies she's never seen..." - otterhere

I didn't hear that in the presentation of The Apartment. And in the extended Essentials promo that I caught between films this weekend, I do remember her saying that she was excited to have the opportunity to talk about movies she loves - along with with films she may not love but does admire by persons she respects.

That's not to say she didn't admit to not having seen some of the Essentials titles before she become co-host. She might have. But I give her a "pass". She's an actress. She doesn't make her living writing about movies. Molly Haskell is a Essayist / Film Critic / Author whose creative output has been virtually all fim-centric. There's no excuse for her to have not seen Gunga Din - especially at her age. She's had decades to see it while Rose McGowan has probably had half the amount time to catch up with all the great films from the past 80 years.

  11. Re: Arkansas

Is it Gentlemen Prefer Blondes that has the iconic song "A Girl From Little Rock"? That's about the only reference I can come up with.

That is, unless parts of Primary Colors (not a bad movie either) are set in Arkansas.

In all my online activity, I have never come across a "quality" poster for a Fatty Arbuckle film. I don't think I ever saw a mediocre poster either. So, sadly, "No". I don't have one to share.

I wasn't even sure if "Snub" Pollard & Max Davidson were comedians at first. I snaggd them just because it said "Hal Roach" in big letters.

The "comedians" is continuing in here for the rest of the week. I think everyone will find a few surprises among those yet to come. And I hope you will enjoy them as much as you have enjoyed the ones posted so far.

  13. Love the inclusion of the "clavicle"and the "love birds" Well done Gregory1965 and mr6666.

(And I don't know what to think of FrankGrimes' selection. The Ford pixies must have got to him.)

    Gotta add

    "The Cane" of Charlie Chaplin

"The Silver Dollar" of George Raft (in whatever movie he flips/tosses a Silver Dollar)

"The Glass Of Milk" in Suspicion (it glows!)

"The Earrings of Ma Joad" in The Grapes Of Wrath

"The Grapefruit" in The Public Enemy

"The Chess Piece" in Stalag 17

"The Lock Of Hair" in The Westerner

and "stealing" from a different thread

    "The Needlpoint" from The Heiress

Fun Idea - and one I have thought about before.

Just so I understand, you want everyone to brainstorm on a single state before moving on to the next one? Is that right? 'Cause when you get to the States formed from the Original 13 Colonies, I got a few you can use from the second programming challenge I did.
