Hello David Simmons -
Your (very interesting) article was hashed over by a few of us. It was one of the most extensive pieces on TCM that I have ever seen - and probably the only one since the corporate restructuring. Because of that, I was quite happy you sought out and spoke with Tom Karsch. I'd love to know what he had to say "off the record". (but I know those comments won't see the light of day in here.)
You mentioned in your article that you were "told" in these Forums (I believe) that programming ideas are sometimes lifted from these discussion boards. It left us wondering if you participated in these Forums last Fall/Winter while researching the article. Did you? Or, by "told", did you mean that you read it in here? (And it is true. Some programming events for TCM have come out of posts and threads in here.)
And how much grief did you get over the "Ricky Ricardo" gaffe?
Hope you continue to hang out around here.

Whadya say we hit the FreeRepublic Forums. Bet we could find some good reading over there. There has to be some fun threads like -
"Barack Obama is a Muslim"
"Hillary Clinton is a lesbian"
or even a wild
"The New York Philharmonic is an Unpatriotic and Commie Tool Organization for playing in North Korea."

From what I have read, you aren't guilty of offending anyone.
Granted, the topic of your post has been hashed and re-hashed many times. A stroll back through a few pages of threads in this particular Forum will reveal the most recent ones.
It all boils over and then peters out into a temporary detente. I think this time there was little anyone had to say on the subject anymore - so it veered off into more fertile territory for "argueing for arguement's sake". But you're not responsible for that.

I don't think TCM negotiates with --terrorists-- troublemakers.

"That "expose" on the copied pasted "flame" was riveting television!" - mickeeteeze
No kidding. Never thought I'd get proof that the TCM Message Boards are the target of "Freepers". Very illuminating.

Certainly not a way to make yourself welcome.

You didn't do anythig to apologise for - from what I read. I was going to point out that certain post was directed to the wrong person myself but you beat me to it.

Are you guys gonna keep this up all night? Just let me know 'cause this promises to be more entertaining than Maverick and I'd like to sell refreshments.

Sounds a lot like "Eve Harrington" to me.

"We saw Joaquin Phoenix, Reese Witherspoon, all them." - virginia1995
That's so funny as just last year Reese Witherspoon and Peter Skarsgaard were in the restaurant where I work to shoot a scene for Rendition. I was there - and was paid - to troubleshoot any problems/questions about the restaurant and to clean up after they left. Didn't get close to either one of them - not that I really wanted to anyway.
Last week the Coen Brothers sent someone to scout the restaurant for a possible location for a future film. I haven't heard if anythig definite has come of it though.

"...it was Anne Baxter who insisted on being in the Best Actress category instead of the Best Supp. Actress. Which, if true, is too bad because she likely would have won as Best Supporting."
Well, does she really deserve to be "competing" against these roles?
Hope Emerson - Caged
Celeste Holm - All About Eve
Josephine Hull - Harvey
Nancy Olson - Sunset Boulevard
Thelma Ritter - All About Eve
And it looks like the potential problem of "vote-splitting" would be even worse in that category.

"Wow, Ben-Hur, Lawrence of Arabia and Bridge Over The River Kwai. All, one right after the other."
My gluteus needs to be more maximus to be able to sit through all three of those films back-to-back.

"Baxter's Oscar nomination insistence spoiled things."
Well, she is the title character. It is her story.
"Your thoughts?"
I am and have been an unrepentant "Billie Dawn" advocate/apologist for a long time. And nothing will change that. (Though I have never seen Caged.)

I heard Ben Makiewicz gave a very heartfelt intro/outro on his uncle's film. Sorry I missed that.
Wouldn't it be "fun" if TCM could show all four of the films from 1950 wth Best Actress nominees back-to-back one night?
Anne Baxter - All About Eve
Bette Davis - All About Eve
Judy Holliday - Born Yesterday
Eleanor Parker - Caged
Gloria Swanson - Sunset Boulevard
It probably won't settle the argument of "who wuz robbed' that night but at least we all would have the films fresh in our minds when discussing them. Maybe we could even find a (devil's) advocate for Eleanor Parker in here.

"Was I the only one who enjoyed it?"
Not at all. So much more insightful (and surprising) to hear the views of a talented male actor than the views of Meryl Streep (yet still interesting) from her "Star Of The Month" piece.
I believe the piece was extracted from the "Stardust" documentary that premiered on TCM in 2006. I know James Woods was all over that documentary.
And "Stardust: The Bette Davis Story" will be shown again on April 5th during a 24-hour salute to Bette Davis (which I assume is the anniversary of her birth.) Definitely worth making time for.

I am going to assume that the presentations of Raging Bull and Network this past month was "uncut" so obviously what was "TCM policy" in 1998 has evolved by 2008.
I haven't seen Zabriske Point but it sounds like it's removal from the schedule isn't a language, nudity or violence issue - but a sexual content issue.
Of course the mind boggles at just what level of explicitness - real or simulated - is in the movie.

"The Day of the Jackal, Three Days of the Condor, and Marathon Man all in one evening!! How great was that!!" - SSOS
About as good as it gets. Ain't TCM grand?
Damn. Marathon Man is one fine movie. And there isn't one instace in the plot that strains credulity. Can't say that about most thrillers - or the like - nowadays. (See The Departed.)

TCM 1 or TCM 2 ?

"BTW, does anyone on the board have TCM On Demand." - MovieGal53
I am one of the lucky ones and there are a good number of members here that also have the TCM On Demnd service.
Right now, there are about 18 offerings "On Demand" through my cable operator (Time Warner Cable) - all but one a feature film. (There is one film short available.) Most of the current titles are Oscar winners offered to complement the recently completed "31 Days Of Oscar" event. It has been handy to have some of these films available "On Demand" so I could forgo recording them during their presentation on TCM itself. I will probably be watching The Long Voyage Home from the "On Demand" menu later tonight.
Two or three new titles are added each week and are available for four (or maybe five) weeks before being rotated out for a new set of titles. Often TCM's Original Documentaries are also made available through the On Demand service.
I hope your cable system gets with the program and makes TCM "On Demand" part of your cable package. (You'll likely have to subscribe to a digital package to have access the service.) It obviously won't replace TCM's 300+ offerings every month but it great to have these choices available, just the same.
